2 – A Seventeen Thousand Dollar Transfer From Seven Years Earlier Led Us Back to the Land My Grandfather Had Tried to Protect

Captain Morales was the one who suggested we examine the money again.

Not the recent withdrawals alone.

The older transactions.

I had been concentrating on the forty-five thousand dollars that disappeared while I was overseas.

That amount already felt impossible to ignore.

But the document naming Dad as my agent was seven years old.

If he had actually used it, there might be a record of what he'd done.

Dalton opened the account history.

I leaned forward.

There were ordinary payments.

Transfers.

Deposits.

Expenses I barely remembered.

I had been nineteen at the time, and money moved through my account without much thought about how those records might matter years later.

Then Dalton stopped scrolling.

He pointed to one transaction.

Seventeen thousand five hundred dollars.

It had been sent from my account to an escrow company.

I stared at the amount.

I remembered trying to save money during college.

I remembered checking my balance before buying groceries.

I remembered being proud when I managed to leave some money untouched at the end of the month.

I did not remember authorizing a transfer that large.

“When did this happen?”

Dalton read the date.

It lined up with the old power of attorney.

I looked at Captain Morales.

She was watching the screen.

Nobody needed to explain why that mattered.

I asked Dalton where the money had gone.

He checked the recipient information.

The escrow account had since been closed, but a company name remained in the records.

Blue River Development.

I knew that name.

For a moment, I couldn't remember why.

Then I pictured the streets behind my grandfather's property.

The unfinished houses.

The construction fences.

The roads that had appeared where there used to be open ground.

Blue River had developed that subdivision.

Grandpa owned his land before those houses were built.

He liked to remind me of that whenever we drove through the neighborhood.

He would point out how the empty lots had disappeared.

How property values changed.

How people who once thought the land was unremarkable suddenly wanted a piece of it.

I hadn't paid much attention.

I cared about the house because it was familiar.

He understood its financial value in a way I didn't.

“Why would I be paying that company?” I asked.

Dalton kept studying the record.

“We don't know that you authorized the payment.”

That was an important distinction.

I had started saying things as though the bank record proved my own actions.

It didn't.

The account was mine.

The money was mine.

That didn't mean the instructions came from me.

I thought about the separate savings account my parents had encouraged me to open during college.

Dad said it would teach me how to manage money properly.

He offered to help.

I remember signing papers at the kitchen table.

He sat beside me, pointing out where my name should go.

Mom moved around the kitchen while we worked.

I didn't read every page as carefully as I should have.

That part was my responsibility.

I had wanted them to see that I was becoming independent.

And I had mistaken their approval for proof that I was.

Dad told me his involvement would be temporary.

I believed him.

Now there was a payment to a property development company that I couldn't explain.

I asked whether the company could confirm what the money was for.

Dalton said he would follow the records.

He also wanted to know whether the old power of attorney had been presented to a financial institution.

If somebody had used it, there should be traces.

A copy in a file.

An approval.

A date.

Perhaps even a rejected request.

I listened while he explained.

The process sounded slow.

That frustrated me more than I wanted to admit.

I was accustomed to situations where the next step was clear.

This was different.

Every new answer created another question.

The house had been placed in trust.

My parents had apparently tried to use documents giving them control over my affairs.

My money had gone somewhere connected to the property industry.

And now Chloe and Vance were living in the house while my belongings sat in garbage bags.

I wanted to believe these were separate mistakes.

It was becoming harder.

Captain Morales closed the folder after Dalton finished identifying the next records he needed.

She told me to leave the matter with them for the evening.

“Go somewhere you can rest.”

I looked at her.

“I'm fine.”

She didn't argue about whether I was fine.

She simply told me she didn't want me staying alone at the house that night.

I said I could return to the barracks.

That would have been easy enough.

But even as I said it, I knew I wanted a room that didn't belong to my family or to the military.

Somewhere nobody expected anything from me.

Somewhere I wouldn't have to answer questions.

I thanked them both.

Outside, the day was getting darker.

There were soldiers walking between buildings.

A few cars moved toward the base gate.

The familiar sounds of the installation continued around me.

I had been away for nine months, but the base still worked the way I expected it to.

People had places to be.

Procedures existed for a reason.

When somebody signed an official document, that signature had meaning.

I had trusted those things for years.

At home, my own signature had apparently become something my parents could imitate.

I sat in my vehicle for a while before starting the engine.

I had no interest in going back to the house.

Not that evening.

I drove to a modest hotel near the base.

There was nothing special about it.

A parking lot.

A front desk.

A room with a bed and a desk.

I carried my things inside.

The door closed behind me.

For the first time since coming back, I didn't have to think about somebody else moving my possessions.

I set Dalton's papers on the desk.

Then I called Chloe.

She didn't answer immediately.

I watched the phone while it rang.

On the fourth ring, she picked up.

“Where are you?”

“I'm staying somewhere else tonight.”

She didn't ask why.

Instead, she said Mom had told her I was going to sign the house over.

I looked at the folder.

“That's what she said?”

“Yes.”

“Did she explain who owns the property now?”

Chloe hesitated.

“She said Grandpa left it for all of us.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

That was the story my parents had built everything around.

The family house.

The family's needs.

The family's decision.

But the deed said something different.

“Grandpa left it to me,” I said.

Chloe was quiet.

“You've seen the paperwork?”

“Yes.”

“Are you completely sure?”

“I wouldn't say it if I hadn't checked.”

She breathed out.

I could hear a faint noise behind her.

Probably the refrigerator.

For a moment, neither of us said anything.

Then she asked why I hadn't told everyone.

I looked at the papers.

“Because I wanted to understand what happened first.”

“What happened?”

I had to decide how much to tell her.

Chloe wasn't the one who had presented the transfer folder.

She wasn't named on the old power of attorney.

But she was living in my house.

And she had accepted what Mom and Dad told her.

I couldn't pretend that didn't matter.

“Money was taken from my account while I was deployed,” I said.

“How much?”

“Forty-five thousand.”

She didn't answer for several seconds.

Then she said she knew nothing about it.

I believed her.

At least, I believed she was genuinely surprised.

I told her so.

She gave a small laugh without any amusement in it.

“You've always done that.”

“Done what?”

“Acted like you knew what somebody was thinking.”

I looked down.

She wasn't entirely wrong.

I had spent so much of my life trying to predict my parents' reactions that I'd started doing it with everyone.

I would notice a hesitation.

A change in tone.

A look across a room.

Then I would decide what it meant.

Sometimes I was right.

Sometimes I was just afraid of being caught by surprise.

“I'm trying not to do that anymore,” I told her.

“Then don't do it with Mom and Dad either.”

I almost answered too quickly.

Instead, I waited.

I wanted to tell her the bank records were real.

That the signatures were wrong.

That the deed couldn't be argued away.

But Dalton had been clear about making accusations before the evidence was complete.

“I'm looking at the records,” I said.

“That's all I'm doing right now.”

Chloe said Vance was downstairs.

I asked what he understood about the property.

She told me he knew the same things she did.

The things Mom and Dad had explained.

According to them, Grandpa intended the house for Chloe and Vance.

I asked whether either of them had actually seen documents supporting that.

“No.”

“Did you sign anything before moving in?”

She paused.

“Just the lease.”

I sat straighter.

“What lease?”

“Dad had us sign something last month. He said it was needed for insurance.”

I picked up a pen.

“Do you have a copy?”

“I think so.”

“Can you find it?”

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said she wasn't trying to steal anything from me.

Her voice had changed.

She sounded defensive, but she also sounded frightened.

I put the pen down.

“I know you didn't think you were taking my house.”

“Mom said you were making everything difficult.”

I looked toward the hotel window.

There was a car pulling into the parking lot.

The driver stayed behind the wheel for a few seconds before getting out.

I remember watching that ordinary movement while I tried to choose my next words.

“Mom can call me difficult,” I said. “That doesn't change the deed.”

Chloe said nothing.

I asked her to send me the lease.

She agreed to look for it.

Then she asked whether I planned to have Mom and Dad arrested.

The question struck me.

I had been thinking about signatures and property records.

Chloe was thinking about the family being taken apart.

“No,” I said.

I hadn't called the police.

I hadn't demanded anyone be arrested.

I was trying to establish what had actually happened.

But if someone had committed fraud, the consequences wouldn't disappear just because we were related.

I couldn't say that to her as neatly as I wanted.

“I've asked the attorneys to handle it,” I said.

She was silent.

Then she told me Dad would say I was destroying the family.

I knew he would.

He had used that accusation before whenever somebody refused to accept his version of events.

I told her I wasn't trying to hurt anyone.

She started to speak.

Stopped.

Then said there was something else I ought to know.

“Mom's been opening your mail.”

I stood up.

I hadn't expected that.

“What kind of mail?”

“Bank letters. Military things. Something from an investment company.”

I moved toward the window.

Outside, the last light had gone from the parking lot.

Chloe explained that Mom had been going through the mail while I was deployed.

She said it was part of keeping the property organized.

That was Mom's explanation for almost everything.

She was helping.

She was organizing.

She was taking care of matters so nobody else had to worry.

I asked whether Chloe had read any of the letters.

“Not really.”

“Did you see who sent them?”

“One came a couple of months ago. Mom got upset about it.”

“What happened?”

“She took it into Dad's office.”

I leaned one hand against the window frame.

“Do you remember the company name?”

Chloe thought about it.

Then she gave me three words.

Northstar Fiduciary Services.

I wrote them on the hotel stationery.

The name meant nothing to me.

Not yet.

But I knew enough to understand it was worth asking Dalton about.

I asked Chloe whether she could send the lease that evening.

She said she would.

Before the call ended, I told her not to sign anything else.

Her breathing changed.

“Everyone's acting like this is because of me.”

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

It sounded like something Mom would say.

Or Dad.

Make somebody feel responsible for the argument, and eventually they'll agree to whatever stops it.

“You can decide what you sign,” I said.

“They can't make that choice for you.”

She didn't answer for a moment.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

“I'm sorry about your room.”

I looked at the garbage bags I'd brought with me.

A shirt was visible through the opening of one.

There were things inside that had been mine for years.

Nothing valuable.

Nothing impressive.

Just mine.

“Thanks,” I said.

It was the first apology I'd heard about what happened when I got home.

And it came from the person who was living in my room.

Source: puretales.cafex.biz

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Sister Sent Me a Lease That Night, and One Signature Explained Why My Father Had Been So Certain I Would Give In

Captain Morales was the one who suggested we examine the money again.
