Then we started staying longer."

"And Natalie?"

"She enjoyed going."

I looked at her.

"That's all?"

Mom swallowed.

"She liked the beach. She made friends there."

"So you took her every year."

"Yes."

"And you left me."

Her hands began trembling.

I waited.

Finally, she said something I'd spent my entire childhood wanting to understand.

"David didn't want you near the property."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

"He thought you'd start asking questions."

The room seemed to grow quieter.

I could hear a cart rolling down the hallway.

Somebody laughed near the elevators.

Ordinary hospital sounds.

Yet I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath my chair.

"Questions about what?"

"The trust. The accounts. Who actually owned the inn."

I looked toward Grace.

She remained still.

I turned back to Mom.

"You knew I didn't know any of that."

She nodded.

"And you helped him keep it that way."

Her eyes filled again.

"Your father said it would only cause confusion if you found out too young."

"Too young?"

I leaned forward.

"I was nineteen when you left that envelope on the counter."

She looked down.

"Nineteen, Mom."

"I know."

"I was old enough to drive across the country by myself, but apparently not old enough to know Grandpa had left me something."

She started crying.

I didn't stop her.

For years, I'd mistaken my mother's tears for proof that she cared.

Sometimes they were.

But tears had also helped her avoid uncomfortable answers.

I wasn't going to confuse the two anymore.

"Why did you agree to leave me behind?"

Her voice was weak.

"Your father insisted."

"You could have said no."

She covered her face.

"I know."

"You could have told me the truth."

"I know."

"You could have taken me on one trip."

She made a small sound.

I stared at her.

"Just one."

She lowered her hands.

"Emma, Natalie needed more attention than you did."

I almost stood up.

That sentence.

I had heard different versions of it my entire life.

Natalie was sensitive.

Natalie had a difficult week.

Natalie needed encouragement.

Natalie needed peace.

And I was always expected to understand.

"How did you decide I didn't need you?"

Mom looked at me.

I could see that she hadn't expected the question.

I continued.

"Did I tell you that?"

"No."

"Did you ask?"

She shook her head.

"Then how did you know?"

She had no answer.

I remembered being thirteen and listening to noises outside our empty house.

I remembered lying awake with the hallway light on.

I'd been frightened.

I'd wanted somebody to check the doors.

I'd wanted my mother to call.

Instead, I'd been praised for being responsible.

"I became independent because I had to."

Mom's face crumpled.

"I never meant for you to feel abandoned."

"But you knew I was staying behind."

She nodded.

"You knew I wanted to go."

Another nod.

"And you knew the excuses weren't true."

She covered her mouth.

"Yes."

I looked away.

For twenty years, I had wondered whether my parents understood how much those trips hurt.

Now I knew.

At least my mother had understood enough to lie.

That was harder to hear than I expected.

I could have argued with her for another hour.

I could have asked about every summer individually.

But a nurse came into the waiting area.

She looked from my mother to me.

"Is Emma Hale here?"

I stood immediately.

"That's me."

"Natalie's awake and asking for you."

Mom rose from her chair.

The nurse looked at me.

"Her condition has improved enough for a short conversation, but she tires easily."

I nodded.

"Can I see her now?"

"Yes."

Mom reached for my arm.

"Emma, please be gentle with her."

I looked at her hand.

"She's my sister."

Mom let go.

I followed the nurse through the doors.

The room looked different in daylight.

Natalie was propped against the pillows.

Her face was bruised.

Her injured arm rested on a support.

Bandages covered part of her shoulder.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, her eyes filled immediately.

"Em."

I stopped.

Nobody had used that nickname with me in years.

I stepped toward her.

"Hi."

She tried to smile.

It didn't last.

"You came back."

"Mom said you were asking for me."

Natalie nodded.

Her voice was rough.

"I didn't know whether you would."

I pulled a chair closer.

"Neither did I."

She looked down.

For a few seconds, we listened to the machines.

Then she reached toward me with her uninjured hand.

I hesitated.

I remembered the dolphin keychain.

The pictures.

The time she told Brooke I didn't like traveling.

I remembered the yellow envelope.

Then I looked at the bandages covering her other arm.

I took her hand.

Natalie began crying.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

"For what?"

She swallowed.

"For how I treated you."

I didn't answer.

"For all those summers."

The words surprised me.

I'd spent years believing she hadn't even noticed I was missing.

Now she was looking at me with tears running down her face.

"I was awful to you."

I watched her struggle to breathe comfortably.

"You were."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

For once, she didn't argue.

She didn't say I was too sensitive.

She didn't explain that I had misunderstood.

She simply agreed.

I felt something loosen inside me.

Not forgiveness.

Not even relief.

Just the unfamiliar experience of hearing Natalie admit she'd done something wrong.

She opened her eyes.

"Emma, there's something I have to tell you."

I leaned closer.

"About the fire?"

"About the inn."

I waited.

She squeezed my hand.

"I knew it was supposed to be yours."

My stomach tightened.

"How long?"

Natalie looked toward the window.

Then she answered.

"Since the summer you left."

I stared at her.

The summer of the forty-dollar gift card.

The summer she drove away with our parents and Scott.

She had known.

I slowly released her hand.

Natalie began crying harder.

And for the first time, I understood that my sister hadn't simply benefited from our parents' lies.

She had helped keep one of them alive.

<a
