I\u2019m requesting a copy of the full application through the lender\u2019s fraud department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did they let you see any of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have enough concern now that the actual titled owner is disputing the application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the basement door.<\/p>\n<p>My home had begun to feel less like a house and more like a crime scene built one document at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould this put a lien on the property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from what I know right now. year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was making conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald does not make conversation about tax liens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rubbed my temples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have they been in financial trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared toward the basement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably longer than they admitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That possibility changed the timeline.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the condo flood had not created desperation.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it had merely exposed it.<\/p>\n<p>Emma came downstairs around noon.<\/p>\n<p>She had slept less than two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Her hair was damp from a second shower, and she was wearing loose gray sweatpants and one of my hospital hoodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs my money coming it meant everything.<\/p>\n<p>At 12:30, Karen Salazar arrived for the emergency case conference.<\/p>\n<p>She came alone, carrying a black shoulder bag and a folder thicker than the one I had found near the recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Karen was in her early fifties, with silver threading through dark hair and an expression that was warm without being soft.<\/p>\n<p>She asked to speak with Olivia smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald looked at me as though I had somehow taught Karen to recognize him.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene emerged last.<\/p>\n<p>She looked broken.<\/p>\n<p>Karen asked Olivia to sit with us at the dining table.<\/p>\n<p>She explained carefully that the existing guardianship application would not proceed as submitted because material information about the household had been inaccurate.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers were laced tightly together.<\/p>\n<p>Karen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you are seventeen, your preference matters this home today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou understand your grandparents may be offered another opportunity to participate in a placement plan if the information is corrected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia looked at Marlene.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I have to live with them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald muttered, \u201cUnbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are several possible temporary arrangements. More like a filing indicating an anticipated security interest that never closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan it hurt the title?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can create questions until formally cleared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho filed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lender\u2019s processing agent, based on the documents Gerald submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Gerald across the room.<\/p>\n<p>He was watching me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan it be removed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe send proof of sole ownership and fraud dispute. The lender has already frozen the application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Denise added, \u201cRachel, the electronic signature attributed to you appears to have originated from an IP address associated with your home network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene\u2019s borrowed session.<\/p>\n<p>Or Gerald\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>Or either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means someone did it from this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost likely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we tell which device?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly, if law enforcement or the lender\u2019s investigators pursue it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald watched my face.<\/p>\n<p>He could tell the news was bad.<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked, \u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the fake signature came from this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFake according to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe you clicked something and forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo nurses in their forties?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t prove that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Those words.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Not I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Not this is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Not someone else did.<\/p>\n<p>Only a challenge to evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time you say that, you sound guiltier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been married to a nurse too long.
