14 – Back at Home, My Mother Set Down the Purse That Held Derek’s Photograph, and I Struggled Not to Demand Every Answer

I carried the groceries inside.

Mom came in behind me.

I heard the familiar sound of her walker.

That sound had comforted me for years.

It meant she was moving.

Managing.

Still finding her way through the day.

After the supermarket, it meant something else too.

It meant the walker was where it belonged.

Not lying on a store floor.

Not pushed aside while someone held her wrist.

I put the bags down.

Then turned toward her.

"Would you like to sit?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

No argument.

No joke about my fussing.

She was tired enough to accept the suggestion immediately.

That worried me.

But I didn't say so.

I helped her get comfortable.

Then I began putting away the groceries.

The apples came first.

I took them from the bag one at a time.

Each one reminded me of why we'd gone shopping.

Mom had wanted to choose them herself.

That had seemed like such a small thing when we left home.

I'd nearly refused to take her.

Now I was grateful we'd gone together.

Not because of what happened.

I would have spared her that in a moment.

But because I'd seen how much that ordinary choice mattered to her.

I placed the apples where they belonged.

Then put away the milk.

It struck me again how ridiculous the whole morning seemed.

I'd left my mother for a few minutes to get milk.

I'd returned to find her being accused of stealing.

And we'd come home carrying exactly what we went to buy.

No stolen goods.

No confession.

Only groceries.

And a photograph that had changed everything about the encounter.

I closed the refrigerator.

The kitchen felt quiet.

I could hear Mom moving slightly in her chair.

I looked toward her.

She had placed her purse nearby.

The photograph was inside.

I knew it was there.

I had watched her return it to that purse.

I wanted to ask her to take it out.

I wanted to hold it properly.

Look at my father's face.

Read the note without Derek's trembling hands between us.

But I waited.

Mom had promised a conversation.

That didn't mean I needed to demand it the moment we reached home.

I went to sit near her.

She looked at me.

"You finished?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Then she looked toward the kitchen.

"Did you put the apples away?"

I smiled.

"Yes, Mom."

"Properly?"

I laughed.

"How many ways are there to put away apples?"

She gave me a familiar look.

"More than you think."

I shook my head.

She smiled too.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Not perfectly normal.

But close enough that I could breathe.

I looked at her wrist.

She saw me looking.

Again.

"Would you like me to check it?"

She considered.

Then held out her hand.

That simple agreement meant a great deal.

I took it carefully.

The marks were still there, though less red than before.

I didn't press them.

I didn't want to hurt her.

I just looked.

She watched my face.

"Well?"

"I don't like it."

"Neither do I."

I looked up.

Her voice was calm.

But she wasn't making light of what happened.

I nodded.

"We'll keep an eye on it."

She withdrew her hand gently.

"All right."

I sat back.

I thought about how differently I might have handled this a few hours earlier.

I would have told her what to do.

Insisted she rest.

Made decisions before asking.

Now I was trying to slow down.

To listen.

It felt awkward.

Like learning a habit I should have mastered years ago.

Mom watched me.

"You've been very quiet since we got home."

I looked at her.

"I don't know where to start."

She nodded.

"I suppose there are a few things to talk about."

I almost laughed.

"A few."

She looked toward her purse.

My eyes followed.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The photograph seemed to occupy the space between us even while hidden.

I thought of Derek holding it.

The way his fingers shook.

How he had almost seemed afraid to turn it over.

The way he'd read the writing.

Then looked at Mom as though he'd found someone he'd lost.

I wanted to understand that reaction.

I wanted to understand my parents' place in his childhood.

But I also wanted to understand why Mom had kept the photograph close.

Those were different questions.

I decided to begin with the part I knew.

"Dad looked happy in that picture."

Mom's expression softened.

"Yes."

I smiled sadly.

"I recognized the shirt."

"I know."

"1991."

She nodded.

"Your Father's Day gift."

I looked at her.

She remembered.

Of course she did.

My mother remembered almost everything connected to the people she loved.

At least, that was how it seemed to me.

I wondered whether that was a blessing or a burden after losing Dad.

Perhaps both.

I looked down at my hands.

"I didn't know you had that picture."

She was quiet.

Then she said, "There are a lot of photographs."

I nodded.

"Yes."

"And a lot of years."

I looked up.

She wasn't being evasive exactly.

She was reminding me that my parents had lived long, full lives.

I couldn't have witnessed every moment.

I couldn't know every person they'd helped.

Every child they'd taught.

Every conversation they'd shared.

That was difficult for me to accept.

Not because I believed I was entitled to every memory.

Because seeing something unexpected reminded me how much I could never recover from Dad now.

I had lost the chance to ask him.

That was the part that hurt.

I looked at Mom.

"I wish he were here."

Her eyes filled immediately.

She didn't try to hide it.

"So do I."

I swallowed.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I remembered how Dad had stood behind Derek in the photograph.

His hand on the boy's shoulder.

Such an ordinary gesture.

Yet I could see affection in it.

Or at least the kind of easy kindness I remembered from him.

I wondered what he'd have said about the morning.

How he'd have reacted to seeing Derek grown.

Whether he'd have recognized the scar.

Whether he'd have been angry about the accusation.

I couldn't know.

It was tempting to imagine his response.

But I wanted to be honest.

Dad was gone.

And pretending to know what he would have done wouldn't bring him back.

Mom reached toward her purse.

My heart gave a small jump.

I thought she was going to take out the photograph.

Instead, she adjusted the strap.

Then rested her hand in her lap.

I almost felt foolish for being disappointed.

She noticed.

"You want to see it again."

I nodded.

"Very much."

She looked at me.

"Because of your father?"

"Partly."

She waited.

"And because of Derek."

Mom nodded slowly.

I leaned forward.

"I don't remember him clearly."

She didn't seem surprised.

"It was a long time ago."

"I know."

"And you weren't there for every part of our lives."

I looked down.

That was true.

I didn't like hearing it.

But it was true.

Parents have lives outside their children.

Teachers have students their families may never know well.

Kind people form connections that don't always become family stories.

I understood that in theory.

The photograph made it real.

I looked at Mom.

"Was he one of your students?"

She considered.

Then nodded.

"I knew him when he was a boy."

It wasn't the complete answer I'd hoped for.

But it was the answer she gave.

I didn't push.

I knew she remembered the incident at Lincoln Elementary.

She'd held a paper towel to his eyebrow.

She'd listened to his jokes.

Those details belonged to the teacher she'd been.

I could picture her in a classroom.

Patient.

Firm.

Able to make a frightened child feel safe.

I had seen that side of her throughout my life.

Even after retirement.

She still spoke about children as individuals, not simply names in old school records.

And Derek had remained an individual in her memory.

Long after he grew up.

Long after they stopped seeing each other.

She looked toward the purse again.

I waited.

Finally, she reached inside.

Her fingers moved carefully.

Then she withdrew the photograph.

The same Polaroid.

The same worn white border.

The same little boy with his ribbon.

She held it for a moment.

Then passed it to me.

I took it with both hands.

Not because it was heavy.

Because it suddenly felt important.

I looked at Dad first.

The plaid shirt.

His familiar expression.

The hand resting on Derek's shoulder.

Then I looked at the boy.

His cap was too large.

His ribbon was blue.

He looked proud.

I tried to see the man he'd become in that face.

I couldn't.

Not easily.

But when I looked closely at the eyebrow, I could imagine the small scar that had remained with him.

I turned the photograph over.

Mom's handwriting was still clear enough to read.

Derek.

Summer 1993.

Brave boy.

We'll always leave the porch light on.

E & W.

I read the message silently.

Then again.

I wondered how many times Derek had read it while standing in the supermarket.

He had looked as though the words hurt him.

Or healed something.

Maybe both.

I handed the picture back to Mom.

She looked at it.

Then placed it gently on her lap.

I wanted to ask why she'd written that promise.

I wanted to ask whether Derek had needed somewhere safe to go.

But that would have been a guess.

The photograph didn't tell me.

And Mom hadn't explained.

So I asked something smaller.

"Did you know he'd kept that scar?"

She smiled faintly.

"I could see it."

"I barely noticed it."

"You weren't looking for it."

I thought about that.

She was right.

I hadn't been looking for Derek.

I had been looking for the person hurting my mother.

That was all I could see.

Mom had seen both.

The adult man.

And the child she remembered.

It didn't excuse him.

But it explained why her reaction had been different from mine.

I looked at her.

"Are you glad you recognized him?"

She lowered her eyes to the photograph.

For a long moment, she didn't answer.

Then she said, "I'm glad he remembered."

I nodded slowly.

It wasn't the same question.

But I understood why she'd answered that way.

She wasn't saying the encounter had been good.

She wasn't saying the humiliation had been worth it.

She was saying that recognition mattered.

And I could see that it did.

I looked at the Polaroid again.

The little boy with the ribbon.

Dad's hand on his shoulder.

The fading words on the back.

I realized I wasn't going to understand everything in one afternoon.

There were too many years behind that picture.

Too many memories.

And perhaps too much grief.

I leaned back.

Mom kept the photograph in her lap.

For a while, we sat together without speaking.

The grocery bags were empty.

The apples were put away.

The milk was in the refrigerator.

The shopping trip was finished.

But the photograph had brought part of the past into our home.

And for the first time, I was willing to let that past unfold at my mother's pace.

<a
