11 – The Message About the Porch Light Would Not Leave My Mind, and I Began to See How Little I Knew of My Parents’ Past

There was one sentence I couldn't stop remembering.

We'll always leave the porch light on.

I had read it on the back of the photograph.

The words were written in my mother's handwriting.

Dated in the summer of 1993.

Signed with two initials.

E and W.

My parents.

That was the part I understood.

Everything else remained uncertain.

As Mom and I moved through the supermarket, the sentence kept returning.

It sounded warm.

Welcoming.

But there was something else in it.

A promise.

Not simply that someone was welcome to visit.

Something more lasting.

Something that reached beyond a single summer.

I wondered why my parents had written that to Derek.

I wondered whether he'd needed to hear it.

Then I caught myself.

I was beginning to invent explanations.

And I had promised myself I wouldn't do that.

I knew what was on the photograph.

I knew how Derek had reacted.

I knew Mom had kept it for decades.

That was all.

I had to be careful with the rest.

Mom walked beside me.

Her expression was thoughtful.

I wondered whether the message was running through her mind too.

Then I remembered something she'd said near the apples.

She'd told Derek she hadn't been certain it was him.

She'd recognized the name.

Then the face.

Then the scar.

She'd needed the photograph to be sure.

That meant she hadn't gone to the store expecting to see him.

The picture had already been in her purse.

I looked at her.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Why did you have Derek's photograph with you?"

She turned toward me.

I knew immediately that it was a different question from the others.

Not why she'd placed it in her pocket.

She'd already explained that.

I wanted to know why she'd carried it into the store in the first place.

She rested her hands on the walker.

Then looked at me.

"I kept it."

I waited.

She said nothing more.

I could tell she understood the question.

But she didn't seem ready to explain everything behind it.

I looked away.

I didn't want to press her.

Not while she was tired.

Not after what had happened.

Still, I found myself imagining the photograph resting in her purse before that morning.

The old border.

The faded writing.

The faces preserved from a summer long gone.

Dad still alive.

Derek still a boy.

Mom younger than I was used to seeing her.

A moment held still while everything around it changed.

I wondered how often she'd taken it out.

I wondered whether she'd shown Dad the picture during their years together.

Whether they'd spoken about Derek.

Whether they'd wondered what had become of him.

I had no answers.

But the possibility that they'd carried those memories privately made me ache.

I thought about the years after Dad died.

Mom had become quieter.

She had stopped wanting to go out.

She spent long stretches of time at home.

I had assumed I understood what that meant.

Grief.

Loneliness.

The loss of the man she'd loved all her life.

Those things were real.

I knew they were.

But perhaps grief also made people return to other memories.

Other names.

Other people who had mattered.

I couldn't say whether that was true for Mom.

She hadn't told me.

And I didn't want to put feelings into her mouth.

But I could see that the photograph wasn't an object she'd forgotten.

She had recognized it immediately.

She had known where it was.

She had pulled it out because she understood what it would mean to Derek.

That suggested a memory she'd kept alive.

I looked at her face.

She was watching the shelves.

Nothing about her expression explained what she was thinking.

I wished I could ask Dad.

That thought came suddenly.

So suddenly that I had to stop walking.

Dad would have known about the photograph.

He was in it.

He would have remembered the day.

Perhaps he could have told me why the blue ribbon mattered.

Or what had happened at Lincoln Elementary.

Or why the porch light had become a promise.

But he wasn't here.

And that was still difficult to accept.

Even after all this time.

There were days when I could live with his absence quietly.

Other days, a small reminder brought it back.

The plaid shirt had done that.

Seeing it in the photograph had taken me straight to the year I'd bought it.

Father's Day, 1991.

I remembered feeling pleased with myself.

It suited him.

I could picture the way he wore it.

Then I looked at the photo and saw it on his shoulders again.

I hadn't expected to see him that morning.

I hadn't expected to see him at all.

Not outside the photographs I already knew.

That was part of why the Polaroid unsettled me.

It was a new glimpse of someone I'd loved.

A moment I'd never fully understood.

I wanted to hold on to it.

But it belonged to Mom.

I couldn't demand it simply because I was curious.

We continued walking.

I watched her hands.

They were steady on the walker.

Her wrist seemed less painful now, although I couldn't be certain.

I thought about asking.

Then decided I had asked enough for the moment.

Instead, I spoke about Dad.

"That plaid shirt."

Mom looked up.

"What about it?"

"I remember giving it to him."

She smiled.

"I know."

"Father's Day."

"Yes."

"1991."

She nodded.

I smiled too.

It was comforting that we shared that memory.

At least that piece belonged to both of us.

"He wore it in Derek's picture."

"I saw."

I looked at her.

"Did you recognize it right away?"

She gave a small smile.

"Of course."

We both fell quiet.

I wondered whether she could remember the exact day the photograph was taken.

She probably could.

Her memory for small details had always been remarkable.

She remembered the scar.

The paper towel.

The knock-knock jokes.

I doubted she'd forgotten much about the blue ribbon.

But I didn't ask her to tell the story yet.

I could see she was tiring.

Her shoulders had lowered.

She was moving more slowly.

The excitement of the morning had left her worn out.

I felt a surge of protectiveness.

Then I remembered her words.

Don't make yourself responsible for what he did.

I tried to separate caring for her from controlling her.

It wasn't easy.

I was used to stepping in.

Offering solutions.

Making decisions.

Telling her what would be best.

She usually resisted.

Sometimes I resented it.

Now I understood why.

She had spent a lifetime making choices.

Teaching children.

Keeping a home.

Loving my father.

Living through his death.

And I had begun acting as though the need for a walker meant she no longer knew what she wanted.

I felt ashamed.

The feeling wasn't new.

But it was clearer now.

She had asked to go shopping.

I'd argued.

She'd insisted.

Then something terrible had happened.

And I had almost taken that as proof that she shouldn't have come.

But Derek's cruelty didn't prove Mom was incapable.

It proved Derek had behaved cruelly.

Those were different things.

I thought about the guard again.

His tears.

His apology.

The way he'd lifted her walker.

I remembered watching him place the photograph on the apples.

So carefully.

As though it might break.

It was strange that he'd understood the fragility of a photograph more quickly than he'd understood the fragility of an elderly woman's wrist.

I wondered whether that realization would stay with him.

I hoped it would.

Mom glanced at me.

"You've gone quiet again."

I smiled faintly.

"Have I?"

"Very."

I looked at her.

"I'm thinking about Dad."

Her expression softened.

"So am I."

Those words reached me more deeply than I expected.

I wanted to hug her.

Instead, I touched her arm.

We stood beside the shelves for a moment.

Neither of us said anything.

I thought about Dad standing behind Derek.

His hand on the boy's shoulder.

That gesture was so familiar.

Not because I remembered the moment.

Because I remembered the man.

He had always been willing to offer reassurance.

A hand on someone's shoulder.

A quiet word.

A look that said they were doing well.

I could imagine him being pleased with Derek's ribbon.

It was easy to imagine.

But I didn't know exactly what he'd said.

I didn't want to pretend I did.

Mom looked toward me.

"You miss him."

I nodded.

"Every day."

She looked down.

"Me too."

I knew that.

Of course I knew it.

But hearing her say it still hurt.

She had spent so many years beside him.

Now she had to carry those memories alone.

Or nearly alone.

I could remember pieces.

But not everything.

The photograph proved that.

There were entire moments of their lives I hadn't witnessed.

And now one of those moments had returned unexpectedly.

I looked at Mom.

"Can we talk about Derek when we get home?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

I felt relieved.

Not because I expected a dramatic explanation.

But because I wanted to understand the people in the photograph.

The boy.

My father.

My mother.

And the promise they'd written.

I didn't know what the conversation would reveal.

I only knew I wanted to hear it from her.

Not from my own guesses.

Not from the expression on Derek's face.

Not from a stranger's interpretation of the photograph.

From Mom.

She knew what she'd written.

She knew why she'd kept it.

And she knew the child whose name had remained in her handwriting for thirty-three years.

I took a slow breath.

Then nodded.

"Whenever you're ready."

She looked at me.

"Thank you."

The words surprised me.

I hadn't expected to be thanked for waiting.

But perhaps I hadn't always been good at waiting.

Perhaps that was something else I needed to learn.

We continued through the store together.

The shopping wasn't finished.

Our questions weren't answered.

But I stopped trying to force the morning toward a conclusion.

Mom had made one thing clear.

She would speak about Derek.

And I would listen when she did.

<a
