I know the photograph upset him. But he shouldn't have needed to know who you were before treating you properly."

Mom looked down at her walker.

"No, he shouldn't."

Her agreement settled something in me.

I'd been afraid that her kindness toward Derek meant she was ignoring what had happened.

She wasn't.

She simply saw more than one truth at a time.

He had done something wrong.

He had recognized her.

He was ashamed.

And there had once been a little boy named Derek who trusted her.

None of those facts canceled the others.

I found that difficult.

I wanted a simpler answer.

Someone to be entirely wrong.

Someone to be entirely good.

A clean division.

But people rarely cooperate with that.

Mom had spent a lifetime teaching children who made mistakes.

Perhaps she had learned not to confuse a person's worst moment with their whole identity.

Still, a person's worst moment could hurt someone.

Sometimes badly.

I wasn't willing to forget that.

We continued walking.

I thought about the shoppers who had watched the argument.

Some had stood silently.

One had recorded it.

I didn't know what they thought after Derek recognized Mom.

Maybe they were embarrassed.

Maybe relieved.

Maybe they understood they'd witnessed something more complicated than a theft accusation.

I couldn't know.

But I remembered feeling exposed under their eyes.

I remembered wondering whether someone would step forward.

No one had stopped the guard before I reached him.

That bothered me too.

I knew crowds could freeze.

I knew people sometimes hesitated when they didn't understand what was happening.

But Mom had been asking for help.

Her walker had been on the floor.

Those things should have mattered.

I shook my head.

Mom glanced at me.

"What is it now?"

I sighed.

"Everything."

She gave a small nod.

"That's a lot."

I looked at her.

"Yes."

She didn't laugh.

Neither did I.

We walked a little farther.

Then she stopped.

"I wasn't frightened of Derek when I first saw him."

I looked at her.

The sentence surprised me.

"Of course not."

"I thought I recognized someone."

She looked toward the direction we'd come from.

"I wasn't sure."

I pictured her standing beside the apples.

Seeing the name tag.

Looking carefully at the guard.

Remembering a boy.

Taking a Polaroid from her purse.

Slipping it into her sweater pocket.

Getting ready to approach him.

That was all she'd been doing.

A private moment of recognition.

Then he had seen her hand.

And decided she'd stolen something.

I felt angry again.

Mom must have seen it.

She rested her hand on my arm.

"Listen to me."

I looked at her.

"I didn't do anything wrong."

"I know."

"And I don't want you carrying his mistake as though it's yours."

I opened my mouth.

Then closed it.

She was right.

I'd been doing exactly that.

Blaming myself for leaving her.

Blaming myself for not reaching her sooner.

Blaming myself for not making him release her immediately.

As though every second of his behavior had somehow been my responsibility.

It hadn't.

I knew that.

But it was hard to feel it.

Mom waited.

Finally, I nodded.

"I'll try."

She smiled faintly.

"That's all I'm asking."

I wondered how often she'd said those words to children.

Probably thousands of times.

Try.

Listen.

Think again.

Start over.

They sounded simple.

But she meant them.

She believed people could do better.

That belief hadn't disappeared when she retired.

It hadn't disappeared after Dad died.

And apparently, it hadn't disappeared when Derek hurt her.

I looked down at her wrist.

She followed my eyes.

Then deliberately adjusted her sleeve.

Not to hide the marks.

This time, I thought she simply wanted to move on.

I let her.

We reached a quieter part of the store.

I could still hear the normal sounds around us.

People talking.

Someone moving a cart.

The ordinary business of shopping.

I felt my breathing settle.

For the first time since the accusation, I wasn't waiting for something else to go wrong.

I thought about the photograph again.

The boy holding the blue ribbon.

The note on the back.

I wondered what had happened to him after that summer.

Where he'd gone.

How his life had unfolded.

Why he seemed so surprised that my mother still had the picture.

I wanted to know.

But wanting wasn't knowing.

I had to keep reminding myself of that.

A photograph could prove a connection.

It couldn't explain every part of it.

A few handwritten words could reveal affection.

They couldn't tell me what had happened afterward.

Derek's tears showed that the memory mattered.

They didn't tell me why it hurt.

I was beginning to understand how little I actually knew.

It made me uncomfortable.

Mom looked toward me.

"You're thinking about him again."

I nodded.

"Yes."

She waited.

I hesitated.

"Do you think he'll be all right?"

The question surprised us both.

I hadn't expected to care.

Not after what he'd done.

But I remembered his face when he read the writing.

The way he covered his mouth.

The way his shoulders shook.

He had looked genuinely overwhelmed.

Mom considered.

"I hope so."

She didn't promise that he would be.

She didn't pretend to know what he was feeling.

She simply hoped.

I looked at her.

"Even after today?"

She met my eyes.

"After today too."

I didn't answer.

I thought about that.

Then I looked away.

I wasn't ready to share her hope without reservation.

But I was no longer certain that anger was the only thing I felt.

Derek had been cruel.

That was true.

Derek had once been a child my parents cared about.

That was also true.

And somewhere between those two truths stood a man struggling to understand what he'd done.

I couldn't resolve that for him.

Neither could Mom.

He would have to live with his actions.

All we could decide was what to do with our own.

I took a slow breath.

Then looked at my mother.

"Let's get the rest of what we need."

She smiled.

"I've been trying to do that all morning."

I laughed quietly.

It felt good.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because for a moment, we could be mother and daughter again.

Two women shopping.

One carrying the groceries.

The other choosing what she wanted.

And somewhere behind us, a man named Derek was left with the memory of a little boy who had once trusted the wrong person to know exactly who he was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The
