He wore the heavy brown cardigan he usually reserved for sitting beside our fireplace, slippers on his feet, hands locked beneath his elbows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel,\u201d he called.<\/p>\n<p>Not hello.<\/p>\n<p>Not Emma is okay.<\/p>\n<p>Just my name, delivered like a warning.<\/p>\n<p>I shut the car door and looked past him toward Mrs. Ellis\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Through her kitchen window, I could see Emma wrapped in what looked like a green bath towel over her sweatshirt. Mrs. Ellis stood beside her.<\/p>\n<p>Emma saw me.<\/p>\n<p>She started to rise.<\/p>\n<p>I held up one hand.<\/p>\n<p>Stay there.<\/p>\n<p>She understood.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald followed my gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no reason for her to involve the neighbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I started toward the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was sitting on a curb in freezing rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe chose to sit there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped halfway up the walkway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was told she could sleep downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a broken couch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor one night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma had told me they wanted her downstairs for several days, but I kept that to myself.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald was already changing the story.<\/p>\n<p>That was useful to know.<\/p>\n<p>I reached the porch.<\/p>\n<p>He remained directly in front of the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to have a conversation before you charge inside making accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove away from my door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n<p>That laugh had irritated me for eighteen years. Gerald used it whenever somebody younger disagreed with him, a dry little sound meant to establish that the other person had not earned the right to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly the attitude that caused tonight\u2019s problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter was put outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t put anywhere. She threw a tantrum and walked out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe took grocery bags with her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarlene packed a few essentials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the tantrum?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>It was small, but I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>He had not expected questions.<\/p>\n<p>He had expected emotion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlivia needs privacy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does Emma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma has had privacy her entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sentence doesn\u2019t even make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes perfect sense if you stop thinking only about your own child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The accusation beneath everything.<\/p>\n<p>Emma had too much.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia had too little.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore whatever Emma possessed could apparently be reassigned by committee.<\/p>\n<p>I had compassion for Olivia. More than compassion. The girl had been living through the collapse of her mother\u2019s life in slow motion, and I knew the humiliation she carried every time another adult discussed her circumstances within earshot.<\/p>\n<p>But Olivia\u2019s suffering did not turn Emma into inventory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out of my way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald lowered his arms.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I thought he might refuse.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>I walked past him and entered my house.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I saw was Emma\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n<p>It lay against the baseboard beside the front closet, wet along one side.<\/p>\n<p>A plastic grocery bag sat next to it. Through the stretched white plastic I could see the sleeve of her gray pajamas and the corner of an algebra textbook.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene stood in the center of the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>She had been crying, though not enough to disturb her makeup. Her hands were clasped over her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, thank goodness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the grocery bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho packed that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all need to calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho packed Emma\u2019s things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene glanced toward Gerald, who had followed me inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there was no reason for her to create such a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood halfway down.<\/p>\n<p>He still wore the navy sweater he had been wearing when I left for work. His hair was messy from running his hands through it.<\/p>\n<p>He looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>I felt no sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome down here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel descended slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, another figure appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia.<\/p>\n<p>She had Emma\u2019s cream-colored comforter wrapped around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>The sight of it struck me harder than it should have.<\/p>\n<p>I had bought that comforter with Emma the previous winter after she spent forty minutes comparing nearly identical shades of cream in a department store. She liked the stitched blue flowers along one edge because they reminded her of a blanket my father had once kept in his guest room.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia looked miserable.<\/p>\n<p>She gripped the fabric with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Rachel, I didn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t your conversation yet,\u201d I said, keeping my voice gentle.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded and stayed on the landing.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both palms over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody got upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Tell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents think Olivia should have Emma\u2019s room temporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at his father.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>I followed his glance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stepped into the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlivia needs stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned back to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said the arrangement would make more sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat arrangement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlivia taking Emma\u2019s room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Emma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene answered for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly until everything with Olivia is settled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me become very still.<\/p>\n<p>This was not one night.<\/p>\n<p>It was not even a few nights.<\/p>\n<p>They intended to remove Emma from her bedroom indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose idea was this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you agree to it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell them no?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The silence stretched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stood there,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to keep things from exploding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur daughter called me from the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Daniel. I don\u2019t think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene exhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis hostility toward him is unfair. Daniel was caught between his wife and his parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere should not have been a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always say things like that because your family was different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mention of my family sharpened everything.<\/p>\n<p>My father had been dead six years.<\/p>\n<p>He had worked more overtime than anyone I knew, saved relentlessly, and bought this house when I was still in nursing school. After my mother died, it became the place where he and I rebuilt our lives.<\/p>\n<p>He had loved Daniel once.<\/p>\n<p>He had adored Emma.<\/p>\n<p>His absence was not permission for the Harts to rewrite what this home belonged to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father has nothing to do with you packing Emma\u2019s toothbrush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene\u2019s lips pressed together.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father would have understood helping family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did not ask me to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t have to ask permission for every small decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a small decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>That shrug nearly broke my control.<\/p>\n<p>On the stairs, Olivia lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I reminded myself she was seventeen. She had not created this family. She was trapped in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlivia,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask for Emma\u2019s room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald turned toward her sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene hurried in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course she didn\u2019t ask. That\u2019s the point. The child never asks for anything because she\u2019s been taught not to expect anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at Olivia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can use the guest room tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat room is unsuitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a normal bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller than Emma\u2019s, certainly, but it had a bed, dresser, window, closet, and attached half bath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnsuitable how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe needs the larger room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we decided she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hung between us.<\/p>\n<p>I looked around my foyer.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s old oak coat rack stood in the corner. Emma\u2019s childhood school picture hung near the stairs. My work shoes were beneath the bench.<\/p>\n<p>Everything in sight belonged to the life Daniel and I had built here.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Gerald had just said we decided.<\/p>\n<p>Not suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Not hoped.<\/p>\n<p>Decided.<\/p>\n<p>I heard myself ask, \u201cWho exactly is we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald lifted his chin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe adults in this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I looked at my forty-four-year-old husband standing three feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently not all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my son\u2019s home too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said Daniel didn\u2019t live here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis name is on the mailbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, I thought he must be joking.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>He gestured vaguely toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHart. It says Hart right outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy married name is Moore-Hart on plenty of records. That doesn\u2019t make a mailbox a title document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure you know what you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Daniel\u2019s family home. We are his parents. Olivia is his niece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Emma is his daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald waved that away with an impatient motion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is not being deprived of shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From behind me came a sound like someone inhaling too sharply.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Emma stood just inside the open front door.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Ellis was behind her holding an umbrella.<\/p>\n<p>I had not heard them approach.<\/p>\n<p>Emma\u2019s face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>Water clung to the ends of her hair.<\/p>\n<p>She had heard him.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald seemed irritated rather than ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were told to stay next door until the adults finished talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Not him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question almost undid me.<\/p>\n<p>A sixteen-year-old asking whether she was allowed to enter the house where she had lived since birth.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never have to ask me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald spoke behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, don\u2019t undermine us in front of the girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face darkened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should think very carefully about how you speak to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Ellis shifted beside Emma.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel finally moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, maybe that\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald looked at his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Your wife has been allowed to pretend she makes every decision in this household because nobody has challenged her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not Olivia.<\/p>\n<p>Not stability.<\/p>\n<p>Not even the bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Power.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald believed the problem was that I had not been challenged.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer and lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou work all night. Daniel is here. We are here. Someone has to make decisions when you\u2019re gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot about my child without me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not the only parent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps her other parent should have acted like one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s expression became almost satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>He thought my anger at Daniel would divide us enough to give him room.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he was right about the division.<\/p>\n<p>He was wrong about what it gave him.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up Emma\u2019s grocery bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake your things upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe cannot go into that room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia backed away from the landing.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene stepped toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, please be reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved between her and Emma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not block my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s patience broke.<\/p>\n<p>His voice rose through the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call the shots in this house too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou really don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth curled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think because your father handed you this place years ago, you can hold it over everybody forever?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about the way he said it caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>Not uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Not speculation.<\/p>\n<p>He knew exactly how the house had come to me.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant the mailbox argument had been theater.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald knew whose property he was standing in.<\/p>\n<p>And he had made these decisions anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlene gasped.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald smiled.<\/p>\n<p>That was not the reaction I expected.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned against the wall and folded his arms again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The calmness of it unsettled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think they\u2019re going to throw us into the rain because you\u2019re angry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019m going to find out exactly what rights you believe you have here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dialed.<\/p>\n<p>As the dispatcher answered, I saw Gerald look toward Marlene.<\/p>\n<p>It was only a glance.<\/p>\n<p>But it passed between them like reassurance.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever they had done tonight, they had not done it believing I could simply order them out.<\/p>\n<p>They thought they had protection.<\/p>\n<p>And standing in my own foyer with my daughter\u2019s belongings packed at my feet, I realized the fight was going to be much larger than one stolen bedroom.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=950\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Father-in-Law Challenged Me in My Own Foyer, Until One Name on an Old Deed Changed the Balance of Power<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gerald did not move when I climbed out of the car.
