But over the years he had become one of its most prominent donors. His software company funded laboratories, scholarship dinners, competition travel, and a new mathematics center. Photographs from fundraising events regularly showed Nathan and Celeste standing beside the headmaster.

Two months earlier, that generosity had become part of my professional life.

Nathan did not know that.

Not yet.

My work with the State Academic Integrity Board had begun quietly. A teacher from another district submitted an anonymous complaint about unusual access to protected materials. Then came a second report involving score changes. A third mentioned pressure from donors.

At first, Crowe Preparatory had been just another school name in a confidential file.

Then financial records arrived.

I remembered sitting alone in my office late one evening, scrolling through payment documentation while rain struck the windows.

A familiar surname appeared.

Crowe.

I assumed coincidence.

Then I saw the company.

Nathan’s company.

I had stared at the screen long enough for it to dim.

Professional protocol required me to disclose a possible conflict. I had done so immediately. The board’s counsel reviewed it and decided my previous marriage did not automatically disqualify me, provided every finding was independently verified and all final decisions were made by the full panel.

I agreed.

From that moment on, I had been more careful than anyone else in the investigation.

Every email required corroboration.

Every payment required documentation.

Every allegation remained only an allegation until evidence supported it.

I had not told Eli or Ethan details. They knew I worked with the board. They knew I could not discuss active cases. They did not know Nathan’s name had surfaced until we arrived at the championship and I warned them there might be tension.

What Nathan knew was far less.

He thought I was a struggling ex-wife accompanying two unexpectedly talented sons.

He had no idea why three official credentials were sealed inside my envelope.

Nathan looked toward the corridor where Eli and Ethan had disappeared.

Then he turned back to me.

“Whatever happens today, don’t encourage them to make this personal with Preston.”

“Why would they?”

“Because you clearly have feelings about my family.”

I held his gaze.

“They are your family.”

His face tightened.

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes,” I said. “Unfortunately, I do.”

Before he could answer, an event coordinator approached, scanning the lobby.

Her eyes found me.

Relief crossed her face.

“Dr. Ellis.”

Nathan went still.

The coordinator hurried toward us.

“We’ve been looking for you.
