Check lower compartment. The letters were small and deliberate, slanting slightly to the right. My grandmother's handwriting was so familiar that I recognized it before my father confirmed the comparison. I had seen those same narrow loops in birthday cards, recipes, and the labels she attached to packets of saved flower seeds.

“Where did you find this?” I asked.

Richard rested his hands beside the paper. “In a folder with the documents from Margaret's house. Diane kept receipts, donation records, and lists of furniture. I was looking for anything mentioning the jewelry box.”

“Was this note already on the back?”

“As far as I know.”

Ethan leaned closer to examine the sheet.

“Is it possible Margaret wrote it before the inventory was completed?”

My father nodded. “I think so. The paper looks like one she may have used while organizing her belongings. Diane seems to have written her own list on the other side afterward.”

I studied the page. There was no reason to believe that the note had been addressed to me specifically, but its location was suggestive. Margaret had wanted the walnut box kept with the bracelet, and Evelyn remembered watching her place photographs and a letter inside it. Now there was an instruction to examine a compartment.

“Did Grandma's jewelry box have a hidden drawer?” I asked.

Richard frowned. “I remember the box, but I never paid much attention to it.”

I turned to Ethan. “Carol said there was a removable tray.”

“Evelyn mentioned the note was underneath it.”

“Then perhaps that's what Grandma meant.”

My father looked toward the window. “Diane said Lauren has the box at her house.”

“Did she say whether anything was still inside?”

“No. When I asked, she told me to stop encouraging you.”

The old irritation rose in me again, but I forced myself to remain focused. I could spend an hour discussing my mother's refusal to answer questions and still know nothing more about Margaret's belongings.

“I need to see the box,” I said.

Richard nodded.

“I agree.”

I looked at him carefully. “And what happens if Lauren says no?”

He lowered his eyes toward the inventory.

“Then I'll have to tell her that keeping it without discussing Margaret's instructions isn't acceptable.”

I had heard my father make promises about confronting Lauren before. He usually returned from those conversations with a new explanation for why I should be patient. But something about his posture was different. He was not speaking with the confidence of a man who expected an easy solution. He looked uncomfortable, even frightened, and he seemed to understand that discomfort was no longer a reason to do nothing.

We spent the next half hour examining the papers. The inventory included furniture donated to a local charity, kitchen items divided among relatives, and several boxes of photographs. Some entries had prices beside them, apparently estimates for the estate records. Others contained only names.

The walnut box was not listed as an item sold or donated. It had been assigned directly to Lauren.

Near the top of the second page, I noticed another entry.

Gardening journals — storage.

“Where is this storage?” I asked.

Richard read the line and shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Grandma wanted me to have those too.”

He looked at me.

“I'll ask your mother.”

I smiled sadly. “You may have to do more than ask.”

He accepted that without arguing.

Before he left, Richard asked whether he could photograph Margaret's letter. I hesitated. The letter was deeply personal, and I did not want it passed around the family as another piece of evidence to debate. I agreed that he could photograph the smaller list of belongings, but not the pages where Margaret described my childhood and family relationships.

He seemed disappointed for a moment, then nodded.

“That's fair.”

As I walked him to the door, he paused beside the coat rack.

“Amelia, I'm beginning to realize how often I told you to let things go because I didn't want to deal with the argument that would follow.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

He pressed his lips together.

“I can't change all of that at once.”

“No,” I said. “You can't.”

“But I can stop doing it now.”

I wanted to believe him. I also wanted to stop measuring his sincerity by what he said in the quiet of my kitchen. The next part would require him to speak to Lauren and Diane when they were angry with him.

“We'll see,” I answered.

That evening, I called my sister.

Lauren did not answer the first time. On the second attempt, she picked up with a sigh.

“Amelia, I already told you I'm not discussing Grandma's things.”

“I know you said that.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because Dad found the inventory. It says you received her walnut jewelry box.”

There was a brief silence.

“So?”

“So Grandma wrote that she wanted it kept with the bracelet and given to me.”

Lauren gave a sharp laugh.

“Grandma wrote all kinds of things toward the end.”

I felt my shoulders tighten.

“What does that mean?”

“She was old, Amelia. She changed her mind about things. Mom knew what she wanted.”

“Evelyn Parker was there when she put a letter with my name on it inside the box.”

Lauren said nothing.

I continued.

“I'd like to see it. I don't need to argue with you about who owns it while we're looking. I just want to know whether Grandma's note and photographs are still there.”

“There's nothing in it.”

“Then you won't mind showing me.”

Her breathing changed. I could hear something moving in the background, perhaps a cupboard door.

“I have two children and a marriage that's falling apart,” she said. “I don't have time for this.”

“I understand that you're busy.”

“No, you don't. You're living in your perfect little house with your perfect husband, and you're worrying about an old box while my life is collapsing.”

I looked toward the workshop, where a light glowed through the window.

“My life isn't perfect, Lauren. And asking about Grandma's belongings isn't an attack on you.”

“You always make it sound that way.”

“I'm not going to argue about that. Can I see the box?”

She ended the call.

I remained standing with the phone in my hand, listening to the silence that followed.

Ethan found me near the kitchen window.

“She hung up?”

I nodded.

He put his hands in his pockets.

“Do you want to go over there?”

“No. Not tonight.”

It was already dark, and the thought of arriving at Lauren's house while Sophie and Noah were preparing for bed made me uncomfortable. Whatever their mother had done, I would not turn their evening into a confrontation.

Instead, I sent Lauren a message asking her to let me know a suitable time to inspect the box. I copied the request into my notebook and placed the phone on the counter.

The following morning, Richard called.

He sounded exhausted.

“I spoke to your mother.”

“And?”

“She admitted Lauren has the box. She says Margaret told her she could divide the belongings however she thought appropriate.”

I closed my eyes.

“That's not what Grandma wrote.”

“I told her that.”

“What did she say?”

“She said written notes don't capture every conversation.”

It was possible, of course, that Margaret had spoken to Diane after preparing her letter. But the timing mattered. Evelyn had witnessed her organizing the contents near the end of her illness, and Robert had received the sealed envelope with explicit instructions. None of the evidence supported a later change.

“Did Mom say where the gardening notebooks are?”

Richard hesitated.

“She thinks they're in a storage unit.”

“Which one?”

“Lauren rented one during the house clearance.”

I sat down.

There was now a second location where Margaret's things had been kept without my knowledge.

Richard continued, “I asked for the address. Your mother says Lauren handles the payments.”

“Dad, this is becoming ridiculous.”

“I know.”

He sounded genuinely ashamed.

“I told Diane that if Margaret wanted you to have those things, we need to find them.”

“And how did that go?”

“She said I was betraying Lauren.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course she did.”

Richard did not defend her.

“I told her I wasn't choosing one daughter over the other. I was trying to respect Margaret's wishes.”

For the first time, I heard a meaningful change in the way he described the situation. He had stopped speaking as though fairness required everyone to receive the same amount of comfort. He was beginning to recognize that fairness sometimes required a person to accept disappointment.

That afternoon, I visited Evelyn.

Her small brick house stood two doors from Margaret's former home. The garden was neatly kept, with clipped hedges and pale chrysanthemums growing beneath the front windows. Evelyn welcomed me into a warm sitting room and offered tea before opening a small photograph album.

She showed me pictures of Margaret at neighborhood gatherings, birthdays, and summer garden parties. In several, Grandma was wearing the silver bracelet.

Then Evelyn turned to a photograph taken the previous spring.

Margaret sat beside her bedroom window, holding the walnut jewelry box in her lap.

The brass lock was visible on the front.

Evelyn pointed toward the lower edge.

“See that?”

I leaned closer.

Beneath the main body of the box was a narrow strip of darker wood.

“Margaret showed me how it opened,” Evelyn said. “The bottom panel slides sideways. She said her mother used to keep letters there.”

My heart began to beat faster.

“Did you see what Grandma put inside?”

“Not everything. She placed an envelope beneath the tray, and I remember her lifting the bottom panel afterward.”

“Did she say what was in that compartment?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Only that she wanted her family history kept together.”

I photographed the picture with her permission.

Then I asked whether Margaret had ever explained why she feared her belongings would be divided incorrectly.

Evelyn looked toward the window for a long moment.

“Your grandmother was a perceptive woman,” she said. “She knew Diane often tried to prevent arguments by giving Lauren what she wanted.”

I felt an uncomfortable tightening in my throat.

“She saw that too?”

“Oh, Amelia. She saw much more than she said.”

Evelyn turned another page in the album.

“She told me once that she worried you'd mistake being easy to love for being easy to overlook.”

I looked down at the photographs.

The words sounded so much like Margaret that I had to blink away tears.

Evelyn placed her hand over mine.

“She wanted you to know you mattered without having to earn your place by making everybody else comfortable.”

I stayed for another hour, listening to memories of my grandmother. When I finally left, Evelyn insisted that I take a copy of the photograph showing the jewelry box. She also gave me the name of the local attorney who had helped Margaret organize some of her personal documents.

I did not know whether legal advice would be necessary. But with the box missing, family accounts contradicting one another, and a written instruction that appeared to have been ignored, I wanted to understand what could actually be established.

I called the attorney's office from my car and arranged a consultation for the following week.

Then I sent the photograph to Richard.

He replied within minutes.

I know that box.

A second message followed.

I'm going to Lauren's house tomorrow.

I stared at the screen.

My father had finally offered to do something that might make his younger daughter angry.

I put the phone away and drove home.

The next morning, Richard called me just before eleven. His voice was tight.

“I've been to Lauren's.”

I stopped trimming a rosemary stem.

“Did she show you the box?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

He took a breath.

“The box is empty, Amelia. But the bottom panel has been removed.”

I gripped the edge of my worktable.

“Where is it?”

“Lauren says she doesn't know.”

There was a pause.

Then my father added something that made my stomach drop.

“She told me Diane took everything out of the hidden compartment before giving her the box.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: My Mother’s Explanation for the Missing Letters Fell Apart When an Old Photograph Revealed Who Had Opened the Hidden Drawer

For several seconds, I could only stare at the three words written on the back of the inventory.
