The man stood in the aisle with his arms folded, his bare feet planted on the carpet, and his face still flushed from the laughter that had followed him through the cabin. He had clearly anticipated a different conversation. In his mind, the attendant would see the bright polish and ridiculous rings, recognize him as the injured party, and immediately demand an apology from me. Instead, she had asked about the events preceding my foolish decision. His eyes moved from her face to mine, and I saw him calculating how much of the truth he could avoid.

"I was just trying to make myself comfortable," he answered at last.

The attendant nodded without changing her expression. "I understand that long flights can be uncomfortable, sir. Where were you resting your feet?"

He looked toward the armrest beside me. For a moment, he seemed tempted to deny everything. Then he noticed Diane watching him, her magazine closed against her knees.

"Over there," he admitted. "But I wasn't doing anything wrong."

"On the passenger's armrest?"

"I wasn't using the whole thing."

I almost spoke, but the attendant raised one hand slightly, signaling that she wanted to finish gathering the facts. I appreciated the gesture. My earlier encounters with the man had already demonstrated how quickly a straightforward disagreement could become an exhausting argument. She was speaking quietly, without accusation, and requiring him to answer questions that left little room for evasion.

Diane leaned forward. "His bare foot was resting against Rebecca's arm. She asked him repeatedly to remove it. He refused."

The attendant turned toward her. "You witnessed that?"

"Every word. I was sitting right here."

The man let out an impatient breath. "They're exaggerating. My foot was barely touching anything."

I looked up at him. "It touched my wrist when the plane moved. I told you that."

"And I told you I needed to stretch!"

Several passengers nearby had stopped pretending not to listen. An older gentleman across the aisle lowered his newspaper. A younger woman removed one earbud and watched the exchange with open curiosity. The man noticed their attention and appeared to grow angrier, though I could not tell whether his anger came from being contradicted or from realizing that his behavior was no longer a private matter.

The attendant waited until he stopped speaking. "Sir, passengers must keep their feet and personal belongings within their own seating area. Other passengers need to be able to use their armrests without unwanted contact."

He glanced toward his decorated toes. "Fine. I understand. But what about what she did?"

"We will address that as well."

His mouth tightened. He had apparently expected the first issue to disappear once he raised his complaint. Instead, the attendant was separating the two matters, treating each as something that needed to be considered independently. I could see the sense in that approach, even though I felt increasingly uncomfortable about the part I had played.

She turned toward me. "Rebecca, could you explain exactly what happened after he fell asleep?"

I took a moment before answering. The temptation to make the whole thing sound harmless was considerable, especially with so many people watching. But I had already admitted what I had done, and there was little dignity in pretending otherwise.

"I had a small beauty kit in my carry-on," I said. "It was a present for my daughter. I used several of the nail polishes on his toenails and put two toy rings on his toes. I was irritated because he wouldn't move his foot, and I thought it would be funny."

The attendant regarded me carefully. "Did he give you permission?"

"No."

"Then you understand why that was inappropriate?"

"Yes."

The man's expression brightened immediately. "Exactly! That's what I've been telling everyone."

I looked at him, but I answered the attendant rather than allowing him to draw me into another argument. "I understand that I crossed a boundary. I'm not going to defend that part of it. But I also want you to understand that I asked him politely several times to move his foot before any of this happened."

"I understand," she replied. "And I appreciate your being straightforward."

The man pointed at me. "So you're just going to let her get away with it?"

The attendant's tone remained even. "Sir, I've asked her to acknowledge that she acted without your consent. I'm also directing both of you to respect one another's personal space for the rest of the flight. Those are separate responsibilities."

He stared at her. The distinction seemed to irritate him more than a direct reprimand would have. He wanted someone to announce that he was entirely right and I was entirely wrong. He did not seem prepared for a conversation in which both of us could be held responsible for different choices.

"She humiliated me," he insisted.

A quiet laugh came from somewhere behind him.

He turned so sharply that the pink gemstone on one of his toes caught the light. The laughter stopped, but the brief movement drew several more glances toward his feet. I wished, suddenly, that I had never opened Megan's gift. The prank had seemed so contained when he was asleep, so temporary and private. Now its consequences were standing in the aisle, impossible for anyone to ignore.

The attendant followed his gaze. "Sir, please return to your seat. You're blocking the aisle, and other passengers need to pass."

He looked down at his feet again. His expression became almost pained.

"How am I supposed to walk around looking like this?"

"You may put your shoes back on."

That answer produced an unexpected silence. Diane lowered her eyes, and I saw her shoulders rise slightly as she fought another laugh. The man looked toward the floor behind our row, where he had abandoned his shoes before stretching his leg forward. Evidently, the possibility of wearing them had not occurred to him since discovering the decorations.

He bent to retrieve them, moving awkwardly in the narrow aisle. One shoe had slid beneath the seat, and he had to reach farther than he expected. As he straightened, he bumped his elbow lightly against a seatback and muttered something I could not hear. The flight attendant stepped aside to give him room.

"Would you like a tissue or a damp cloth?" she asked.

He straightened again. "What I want is for this stuff to come off."

"Nail polish generally requires remover," I said before I could stop myself.

He looked at me with renewed irritation. "I know what nail polish is."

"Then you know water won't remove it."

Diane gently pressed her hand against my wrist beneath the armrest. It was a discreet warning to stop talking. She was right. I closed my mouth and let the attendant continue.

"We don't have nail polish remover among our standard cabin supplies," she explained. "You may be able to purchase some after landing. For now, please put your shoes on and take your seat."

The man lowered himself into his row, visibly dissatisfied. He pulled off the purple heart ring first, then struggled with the pink gemstone. Both were made of flexible plastic and came away easily. He held them between two fingers, looking as though he had discovered something particularly offensive in his luggage.

"What do I do with these?"

"They belong to my daughter's set," I said quietly. "I'll take them back."

He looked ready to throw them. The attendant extended her hand before he could decide.

"I'll return them to her, sir."

He dropped the rings into her palm with an expression of intense disgust. They looked even more ridiculous resting against the dark fabric of her uniform. She returned them without comment, and I placed them in the outside pocket of my bag, separate from the unopened pieces of Megan's present.

The man finally put on his shoes. I heard him muttering as he pushed his feet inside, then a sharp movement as he fastened one lace too tightly and had to loosen it. His shirt was still wrinkled, his headphones hung crookedly around his neck, and the expensive watch he had displayed so casually earlier now seemed the least noticeable thing about him.

Before leaving, the attendant looked at me. "Rebecca, please don't touch another passenger's belongings or person again, even if you're frustrated. If something like this happens, call us."

"I will," I replied.

Then she turned toward him. "And sir, please keep your shoes on or, at minimum, your feet inside your own seating space. No passenger should have to ask repeatedly for that consideration."

He answered with a stiff nod.

The attendant gave each of us a final measured look before continuing down the aisle. The confrontation was over, at least officially. I settled back in my seat and became aware of how tense my shoulders had grown. My neck ached, and the cabin suddenly felt warmer than before. I had wanted a quiet trip home, yet I had helped create precisely the kind of disturbance I ordinarily worked hard to avoid.

Diane waited until the attendant disappeared behind the curtain before speaking. "Well," she whispered, "that was quite an investigation."

I exhaled slowly. "I don't think I'll be doing that again."

"No?"

"No. Especially not with an audience."

She considered me for a moment. "You realize the strangest part of all this?"

"That I'm apparently willing to give a sleeping businessman a manicure?"

"That he could have avoided everything by moving his foot six inches."

I glanced toward the empty armrest beside me. For the first time in nearly an hour, there was nothing resting on it. No bare skin, no unwanted contact, no persistent unpleasant smell. I placed my elbow there cautiously, almost expecting the man to object from behind me.

Diane followed the movement and smiled. "There. You've recovered your territory."

I rested my head against the seat. "And acquired an embarrassing story I'll probably never tell at work."

At the mention of work, I remembered the documents waiting on my laptop. Tomorrow's meeting would be important, and I could not afford to arrive distracted. I had accepted a regional director position after years of steady work, difficult assignments, and more travel than I cared to remember. The promotion represented responsibility rather than glamour, but I was proud of it. My new team would be looking to me for direction, and I wanted their first impression to be one of calm competence.

I reached for my bag, intending to review the meeting agenda. Before I could open it, however, I heard the man behind me speaking into his phone. The aircraft did not permit an ordinary voice call at that moment, so he appeared to be dictating a message or recording a voice note. His tone was lower than before, but his irritation remained unmistakable.

"Unbelievable," he muttered. "Some woman thought she could make a fool out of me. I'm not letting this go."

I kept my gaze forward. He was entitled to be angry about the prank, and I had already accepted that. Still, something about the promise in his voice disturbed me. It sounded less like an expression of embarrassment than a determination to make someone pay for it.

Diane heard him too. She looked at me with raised eyebrows, but neither of us spoke.

A few minutes later, the man fell silent. The cabin returned to its ordinary rhythm. I opened the meeting agenda, scanned the names of the people I would be meeting, and forced myself to concentrate.

The first page listed the regional office, the reporting structure, and the objectives for the coming quarter. There would be an introductory meeting with the senior management group, followed by individual discussions with department heads. I recognized several names from earlier correspondence, but one senior manager's profile had not yet been circulated.

I read the sentence again, hardly giving it any thought.

The name would be confirmed upon arrival.

At the time, it seemed like an insignificant administrative detail. I had no reason to imagine that the uncomfortable events of the flight had anything to do with the people waiting for me at the office.

Behind me, the man began typing rapidly on his phone.

I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.

Neither of us knew that the next time we met, there would be no airplane seats separating us, no flight attendant to intervene, and no easy way for him to escape the consequences of what had happened.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: After Landing, I Thought the Embarrassing Encounter Was Finished Until an Unexpected Office Meeting Brought the Same Man Back

The flight attendant's question hung between us longer than anyone expected.
