I stopped immediately and listened. Behind me, the man continued snoring, oblivious to the small conspiracy forming only inches from his outstretched foot. Diane watched with the concentrated expression of someone observing a particularly delicate operation. I looked around the cabin, suddenly aware of the absurdity of what I was doing. A grown woman, returning from a professional business trip, was preparing to use a child's beauty products on a sleeping stranger. It was hardly an episode I would ever include in a presentation about sound judgment.

"Are you sure about this?" Diane whispered.

"Not remotely."

She pressed her lips together, struggling not to laugh. "At least you're aware of that."

I pulled the gift from my bag and balanced it carefully on my lap. The packaging was bright and cheerful, covered with familiar Barbie imagery and shades of pink. Six little bottles of nail polish were arranged neatly inside, each one slightly different from the others. The rings occupied a separate compartment. Their plastic gemstones were hilariously oversized, clearly intended to make small children feel as though they were wearing extraordinary jewels.

I had bought the set while thinking about Megan's excitement. My daughter loved nothing better than spreading her belongings across the living room floor and announcing that everyone in the family required a makeover. She took the work seriously, examining fingernails as though she were a professional preparing someone for an important occasion. I had sat through countless imaginary appointments, obediently extending my hands while she decided between pink, lighter pink, and a shade she described as princess pink.

Diane leaned closer to inspect the contents. "My goodness. That's quite a collection."

"Megan is going to be thrilled."

"How old is she?"

"Eight."

"Ah. That explains everything."

I smiled. "She considers a weekend unsuccessful unless someone has been persuaded to try a new color."

Diane examined the bottles and selected one with a particularly vivid shade. "This would certainly make a statement."

I took it from her. The polish was almost startlingly bright, a cheerful pink that would be impossible to overlook beneath the airplane lights.

"Subtlety doesn't seem appropriate," I murmured.

Diane glanced behind us again. "He's still sleeping."

I removed the little bottle from its packaging, turning it slowly in my fingers. The cap was small, and I worried that opening it might produce a sound loud enough to wake him. Then I realized how thoroughly ridiculous the entire situation had become. I was less concerned about the morality of painting a stranger's toenails without permission than about the noise made by the cap.

"One last chance to convince me this is a terrible idea," I whispered.

Diane considered the question with exaggerated seriousness. "It's definitely not your finest decision."

"That's what I thought."

"But I would be lying if I said I wasn't curious to see the result."

I looked at the sleeping man. His face was turned toward the window, his mouth slightly open. He had apparently entered the kind of deep sleep that long flights sometimes produce after hours of discomfort. His headphones had slipped crookedly across his forehead. His expensive watch rested on his stomach, catching an occasional glimmer of light.

His foot remained stretched toward me like an invitation he had never intended to extend.

I twisted the cap.

The familiar chemical scent of nail polish briefly mingled with the already unpleasant air around us. Diane wrinkled her nose and made a tiny waving motion with her hand.

"At least that's an improvement," she whispered.

I nearly laughed, then steadied myself. Holding the bottle in one hand and the brush in the other, I leaned carefully toward the armrest.

The man's big toe was directly in front of me. I hesitated for a second, aware that once the brush touched his nail there would be no graceful way to explain what I was doing if he woke. I could still return everything to my bag and pretend the thought had never occurred.

Instead, I lowered the brush.

A bright stripe of pink appeared across the nail.

Nothing happened.

The man continued sleeping.

Diane's eyes widened. She covered her mouth so quickly that her magazine slipped from her lap. I froze, waiting for the small noise to wake him. He snored once, shifted his head, and remained still.

I turned back to the nail.

The first coat was uneven, and Megan would have been disappointed if I left it that way. Years of participating in her improvised beauty sessions had taught me that small details mattered. I brushed on another careful stroke, covering the pale nail with a smooth layer of vivid color.

"There," I whispered.

Diane leaned forward to inspect my work. "That's surprisingly neat."

"I've had an excellent teacher."

"Your daughter?"

"She'd be offended if she knew I was practicing without her."

Diane's shoulders shook again. She looked away toward the aisle, evidently afraid that watching any longer would make her laugh aloud.

I examined the remaining visible toenails. There were four of them, each smaller than the last. Painting all five the same color would have been simple, but the kit offered several shades, and I could almost hear Megan insisting that variety was essential.

I selected a second bottle.

This pink was softer, closer to the color of rose petals. The third had a brighter, almost fluorescent tone. Another contained a faint shimmer that reflected the cabin lighting whenever I tilted the bottle. Working with slow, precise movements, I painted each nail a different shade.

The man slept through all of it.

At one point, his foot twitched unexpectedly. I withdrew the brush so quickly that a small drop of polish landed on the edge of the bottle. My heart began beating faster.

Diane caught my wrist gently. "Careful."

I held my breath.

The man shifted in his seat, muttered something unintelligible, and rubbed his nose with the back of his hand. Then he turned his head farther toward the window.

The snoring resumed.

Diane released my wrist. We stared at each other for a moment before she silently doubled over with laughter.

I put the cap back on the bottle and waited until my own breathing settled. I had not expected a ridiculous prank to require quite so much concentration. Yet now that the painting was complete, I had to admit the effect was extraordinary.

Five toenails shone in different shades of pink.

His foot, which had been such an offensive presence minutes earlier, now resembled a display prepared for a particularly enthusiastic child's birthday party.

"That's enough," I whispered.

Diane shook her head and pointed toward the open gift set. "What about those?"

I followed her gaze.

The plastic rings.

Two in particular stood out. One held a large pink imitation diamond, while another displayed a glittering purple heart. They were designed for small fingers, but the flexible plastic bands appeared capable of fitting around the man's toes.

I hesitated.

"The polish is already ridiculous," I said.

"Exactly."

"You really are a terrible influence."

Diane smiled. "I think we reached that conclusion several minutes ago."

I selected the pink ring first, testing the opening gently between my fingers. It expanded just enough to slide over one of his smaller toes without forcing it. I moved slowly, watching his face for any sign of waking. Once the ring settled into place, its oversized gemstone caught the overhead light.

The effect was astonishing.

The enormous pink jewel sat proudly above his painted toenail, glittering each time the plane vibrated. It looked completely out of place on the foot of a middle-aged businessman.

Diane closed her eyes. She was shaking with suppressed laughter.

"Don't," I whispered. "You'll wake him."

"I'm trying."

I selected the purple heart and placed it on another toe. The plastic band slipped into position more easily than the first. For a moment, I held my hand nearby, making sure neither ring was pressing tightly against his skin. Then I withdrew and leaned back.

The transformation was complete.

Five painted nails and two enormous toy rings decorated the foot that had caused so much trouble.

I stared at the result, torn between disbelief and satisfaction.

A sensible voice in my head reminded me that I had just acted without someone's consent and that he would have every reason to object when he discovered what had happened. But my irritation over his repeated refusals had carried me beyond the point where I was willing to undo the prank.

Diane inspected the decorated foot with an expression of professional admiration. "Your daughter would be proud."

"She might criticize the color arrangement."

"Really?"

"She believes the sparkliest shade should always be in the middle."

Diane made a small choking sound and turned toward the window.

I packed the remaining bottles into their compartments, making certain their caps were secure. I had used only a little polish, and most of Megan's gift remained untouched. Nevertheless, I would need to explain why several bottles had been opened before she received them. Knowing my daughter, the explanation would probably delight her more than the present itself.

When I finally zipped the bag closed, I felt an unexpected wave of nervousness.

The prank had been easy.

What happened afterward was beyond my control.

I looked at the sleeping passenger. His breathing remained deep and even, his foot still stretched across my armrest. Nothing about his posture suggested that he suspected the slightest change.

Diane settled back into her seat, wiping moisture from the corners of her eyes.

"How long do you think it will take him to notice?"

"I have absolutely no idea."

"Imagine if he walks through the cabin like that."

I looked once more at the glittering rings.

Then I pictured his expensive watch, his self-satisfied expression, and the way he had dismissed my repeated requests.

For the first time since the unpleasant encounter began, I found myself wondering not how I would endure the remaining flight, but what would happen when the man finally opened his eyes.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: As the Sleeping Passenger Finally Stirred, I Realized Our Ridiculous Little Secret Was About to Become Everyone’s Business

The zipper made a faint rasp as I opened my carry-on bag beneath the seat.
