wants a relationship with me, we\u2019ll figure out what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it won\u2019t subtract you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou raised her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice remained tight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate what you did. I may hate you for the rest of your life, however long that is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she doesn\u2019t need another man telling her love works like territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned away before his own face completely broke.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the evening air felt brutally clean.<\/p>\n<p>Elena stood beside Dad on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Neither knew what to say.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, she asked, \u201cWould it be strange if I called you Robert for now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be strange if you called me Dad because a laboratory told you to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll let later earn its own name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Across the yard, Kayla\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one told her whether to answer.<\/p>\n<p>That alone felt like progress.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla pressed the button.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom spoke long enough that Kayla\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlow down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, where are you now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay. Stay there.
