We found a name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla returned from the kitchen carrying a glass of water she never drank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to call her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s head snapped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not get to say that anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla\u2019s voice became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what Daniel told her about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen maybe I\u2019ll hear his version too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe poisoned her against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence sounded so familiar that all three of us recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the realization reach Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla said, \u201cThat\u2019s what you said Dad did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s mouth trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did some things wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut whenever someone sees you differently than you want them to, you call it poisoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re calling Elena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>The number Andrew found appeared connected to the address.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>A woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was younger than mine, low and cautious.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Kayla.<\/p>\n<p>She looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Maya Ellison Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then the woman inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not Who?<\/p>\n<p>Not wrong number.<\/p>\n<p>Oh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out about you today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI figured,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom called me ten minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of us looked at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained.<\/p>\n<p>Elena continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you might contact me and that you were angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course she had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Dad manipulated the financial records and that you should be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had managed to create another version of events during the drive from my house to hers.<\/p>\n<p>I looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena, I don\u2019t know what to believe yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause anyone who says they already know everything is probably lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sounded nothing like Mom\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>It did, however, sound strangely like mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to meet you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Elena became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor real?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another breath.<\/p>\n<p>Then Elena whispered, \u201cKayla?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My sister\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom sent them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad had them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word Dad meant Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>I had to adjust internally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Daniel get pictures of us?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe followed your lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnline mostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was obsessed with your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObsessed how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Elena continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourt papers. Bank statements. Copies of letters. Photos. Audio recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat recordings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena heard her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Elena said, \u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom grabbed the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No warmth.<\/p>\n<p>No anger either.<\/p>\n<p>Something more settled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t do this over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been waiting twenty years for you to want a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom started crying.<\/p>\n<p>Elena did not soften.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat recordings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne is from the year you were fourteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother and my dad talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey talked about making sure Robert couldn\u2019t get custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd about what story they would tell if he challenged them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stepped toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat tape is edited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you\u2019d never heard it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom froze.<\/p>\n<p>Elena\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just proved you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Mom slowly sat.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my heartbeat in my throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have the recording?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we hear it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cMaya, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll send it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone chimed less than a minute later.<\/p>\n<p>An audio file.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-eight minutes long.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds there was room noise.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom\u2019s younger voice.<\/p>\n<p>Clear.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Terrified.<\/p>\n<p>If Robert gets the girls, everything comes out.<\/p>\n<p>A man answered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then we make sure he doesn\u2019t get them.<\/p>\n<p>Mom spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>The answer changed the expression on Mom\u2019s face before we even heard the words.<\/p>\n<p>You already know what people believe about a husband who cheats.<\/p>\n<p>And in the silence that followed, the lie we had lived inside for twenty-three years stopped looking like one frightened decision.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded like a plan.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=509\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Recording Exposed Who First Invented Dad\u2019s Affair, but Elena Warned Us the Most Damaging Evidence Was Still With Daniel<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kayla sat down slowly.
