hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did that money go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was fifteen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-two thousand dollars is memorable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted to come here because you thought confession would let you control the ending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou admitted enough to make us feel sorry for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed at the transfer records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla stared at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Then her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I found the blue box, there was another folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA red one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>I had not seen fear like that from her yet.<\/p>\n<p>Not when we mentioned Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Not the letters.<\/p>\n<p>Not the forgery.<\/p>\n<p>Not even the stolen account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left it at your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom grabbed her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew stepped toward the door but did not block her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get the folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be done with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen leave it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s nothing, stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened around the bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya, move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t near the door.<\/p>\n<p>She had said it automatically.<\/p>\n<p>The same command she used whenever somebody stood between her and control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is stopping you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked around the room as if realizing there was no obstacle except the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Then she walked out.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla moved toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s going for that folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to beat her there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew already had his keys.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later we were following Mom\u2019s car toward the house where Kayla and I had grown up.<\/p>\n<p>Mom drove fast.<\/p>\n<p>So did Andrew, though he kept enough distance not to turn the road into something dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived, Mom\u2019s car was crooked in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>The front door stood open.<\/p>\n<p>We hurried inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla ran toward the hall closet where the old records had been stored.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I climbed the stairs two at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was in her bedroom kneeling beside an open filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>A red folder lay in her hands.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held it against her chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen give it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears filled her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For one moment, I thought she might hand it over.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she crossed to the small fireplace built into the bedroom wall.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached toward the matches on the mantel.<\/p>\n<p>I moved.<\/p>\n<p>So did Kayla, arriving behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom froze.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you burn it, you lose us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom turned.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at both of us.<\/p>\n<p>Not angry now.<\/p>\n<p>Terrified.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand slowly lowered.<\/p>\n<p>The folder slipped from her fingers and landed on the rug.<\/p>\n<p>Several papers slid free.<\/p>\n<p>The first was a bank statement.<\/p>\n<p>The second was a signed property document.<\/p>\n<p>The third had my mother\u2019s name printed beside someone I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>And underneath them was a life-insurance statement for one hundred fifty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Beneficiary:<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Ellison.<\/p>\n<p>Insured:<\/p>\n<p>Robert Ellison.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>The policy had remained active for seventeen years after their divorce.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you have life insurance on Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>And from downstairs, Andrew called my name.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Urgently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ran down.<\/p>\n<p>He was standing beside Mom\u2019s old answering machine, a device she had never thrown away because she kept almost everything.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it was a handwritten note from the red folder.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew held it out.<\/p>\n<p>One line.<\/p>\n<p>Graham is not to know about account 9416 after January 2012.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had not merely moved money through Graham\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>She had kept using it after he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever she had done with it, even Graham had not been
