Shame entered first, then defensiveness came rushing in to protect her from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re acting like I wanted to hurt you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied your way into my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Kayla\u2019s mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Ryan threw you out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew said, \u201cNo, he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla went white.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Ryan tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s expression was almost apologetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said they had been fighting, but he never threw her out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said she left after an argument. You have Ryan if he still wants to help you. You have Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Mom\u2019s name, something like panic flashed across her face.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat aren\u2019t you telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep reacting whenever we talk about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s our mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kayla grabbed her phone and hurried upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t follow.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, she came down with both suitcases\u2014the same two suitcases she had brought three weeks earlier while telling me she had nowhere in the world to go.<\/p>\n<p>At the front door, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed she meant it.<\/p>\n<p>That almost made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed with relief.<\/p>\n<p>Then I added, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make this okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded once, tears falling freely now.<\/p>\n<p>She left without hugging me.<\/p>\n<p>Through the window, I watched her load her bags into a rideshare. When the car disappeared, Andrew came to stand beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew since Friday,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan asked for forty-eight hours.
