Raymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked as though she had struck him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Grandfather and Grandmother only had one child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what Richard wanted said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked toward the study doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years I believed Raymond left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeft where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the only one I had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that Raymond Blackwood had worked for the company in the late seventies. Unlike Richard, he disliked Arthur\u2019s way of conducting business. Raymond drank too much, argued openly, and once threatened to report their father.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 1981, he disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said Raymond had emptied an account and gone west.<\/p>\n<p>Richard repeated the story.<\/p>\n<p>There were postcards for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had seen two.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>California.<\/p>\n<p>Then nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed them?\u201d Ethan asked.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stared at the photograph of the ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence had become a confession all its own.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked, \u201cDid you ever recognize the handwriting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s expression collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stood.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy stopped him with one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father told me he was an only child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Raymond was dead, Richard spent his entire life helping erase his own brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence filled the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the radar map.<\/p>\n<p>Three cavities.<\/p>\n<p>Helen.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>And one more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Raymond know Helen Bishop?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret wiped her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she did know something.<\/p>\n<p>I could see it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw them together once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly in 1981. Investigative desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was already searching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disappeared in March 1981.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold spread through my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he investigating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>An archived newspaper clipping appeared.<\/p>\n<p>LOCAL REPORTER MISSING; POLICE SEEK INFORMATION.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it was a photograph of a thin man in his thirties.<\/p>\n<p>Another article mentioned his recent work.<\/p>\n<p>Land corruption.<\/p>\n<p>County contracting.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial development.<\/p>\n<p>Blackwood &amp; Sons.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>Three people.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Bishop, who copied the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Blackwood, who opposed Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Price, a reporter investigating the company.<\/p>\n<p>All vanished within months of one another.<\/p>\n<p>All apparently buried beneath Bellweather.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan whispered, \u201cMy grandfather killed three people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator corrected him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not yet know who killed anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan laughed once, bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think they buried themselves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel kept scrolling through archived records.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Price\u2019s final published article discussed allegations that several families had been pressured to sell land below market value.<\/p>\n<p>One source was unnamed.<\/p>\n<p>Another was described only as a company accountant.<\/p>\n<p>Helen.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end, Price wrote that additional information had been supplied by \u201ca member of the owner\u2019s family who has requested anonymity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>The three people beneath Bellweather had been working together.<\/p>\n<p>That explained why they vanished together.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator said, \u201cWe need Helen\u2019s recording as soon as preservation allows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her phone vibrated again.<\/p>\n<p>This time the forensic audio technician had already begun the digital transfer.<\/p>\n<p>A preliminary segment was available.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator connected her phone to the room speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Static came first.<\/p>\n<p>Then a woman breathed close to a microphone.<\/p>\n<p>An unfamiliar voice filled the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Helen Bishop. It is February eighteenth, 1981. If Evelyn ever hears this, I need her to know that I did not leave her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees nearly gave way.<\/p>\n<p>My grandmother continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur knows Raymond has been helping me. Samuel thinks he can publish before they stop us.
