Everything else was obtained through lawful investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not react.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret picked up a page. \u201cSilver Crest Holdings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved almost imperceptibly toward the investigator carrying the hard case.<\/p>\n<p>He was already calculating what they might possess that he had not yet seen.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret frowned. \u201cI remember this warehouse. We discussed it at Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cBlackwood Development paid approximately eleven million dollars for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked relieved, as though familiar numbers meant safety.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe property had recently been valued at less than four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat cannot be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan pushed his chair back. \u201cAppraisals vary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot by seven million dollars without a reason,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were development opportunities attached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were none.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand commercial property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>For six months, Ethan had relied on that sentence in different forms.<\/p>\n<p>You do not understand.<\/p>\n<p>You are emotional.<\/p>\n<p>You are imagining things.<\/p>\n<p>Each one had been a door he expected me to stop at.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel placed another document on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company that sold the warehouse was Silver Crest Holdings. Silver Crest is held through a layered corporate structure involving registrations in multiple jurisdictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s eyes moved across the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stopped breathing for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan rubbed his thumb against his wedding ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a special-purpose entity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what purpose?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing whose money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy company\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlackwood Development has minority shareholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey benefited from every transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they know you were the seller on both sides?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>The second property showed the same pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third.<\/p>\n<p>Then a fourth.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, Ethan controlled the seller. In others, the trail led to associates Daniel had already identified. Inflated purchases produced millions in profit, after which the proceeds moved through consulting arrangements and offshore accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret lowered herself into her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is missing?\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have traced more than twenty-eight million dollars associated with the transactions under review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen clock ticked behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said the overseas accounts were for tax planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is he saying twenty-eight million dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wants this to look criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s expression remained neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no personal interest in how it looks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan turned on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is because of last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found something you didn\u2019t understand and built some ridiculous revenge story around it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Ethan. Last night is why I stopped waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I removed one more document.<\/p>\n<p>My signature sat at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret recognized it. \u201cClaire, you signed this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s head came up.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the genuine refinancing document beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Same angle.<\/p>\n<p>Same pressure points.<\/p>\n<p>Same tiny interruption in the final loop where my pen had caught on coarse paper.<\/p>\n<p>The signatures were not merely similar.<\/p>\n<p>They were identical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authorization was created using a signature lifted from another document,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan gave a short laugh. \u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The female investigator spoke for the first time in several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe metadata is more useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His laughter stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She opened her case and removed a thin folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authorization file was generated on a Blackwood Holdings computer at 11:18 p.m. on March fourteenth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned a page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Blackwood was attending a charity conference in Savannah at the time. Her hotel records and event photographs place her there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have signed electronically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can you possibly know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the verification email was redirected to an administrative account registered under your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s eyes flicked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>He had not known we discovered that.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authentication log originated from the company network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>The document had transferred part of our jointly held assets into a structure Ethan controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to alarm anyone immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to establish a precedent.<\/p>\n<p>Enough that later transfers might appear routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you authorize this?\u201d Margaret asked.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not discussing business strategy at my breakfast table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward the hall.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy shifted one step.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stopped anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The movement humiliated him more than being physically restrained would have.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel folded his hands. \u201cNobody has said you cannot leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell him to move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has not blocked you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy merely occupied the most direct path.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at me. \u201cIs this what you wanted? People in uniforms frightening my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret turned sharply. \u201cDo not use me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blinked.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first interruption he had not expected from her.<\/p>\n<p>She placed the forged signature beside the warehouse records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Claire know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence answered before his mouth did.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Only then did I understand how much she had invested in believing Ethan\u2019s explanations over the years. He was not simply her son. He was the continuation of the Blackwood name, the heir to a reputation his father had spent a lifetime cultivating. Admitting what stood before her meant revisiting every moment she had defended him.<\/p>\n<p>She chose resistance instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, you could have come to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree months ago.
