The mechanism had always been stiff, something Grandmother Lydia used to complain about while insisting she would never have it replaced. Celeste pulled once, then twice, her breathing growing audible in the sudden quiet. On the projection screen behind her, the recorded Marcus disappeared through the vault door while the real Marcus stood frozen beside the stage.

Nobody helped Celeste.

The bracelet finally opened. She caught it before it fell and held it awkwardly in both hands, as though it had become dangerous merely because everyone now knew where it came from.

On the screen, Marcus reappeared carrying my silver gown in its garment bag.

The ballroom watched him cross our upstairs hallway.

I did not look at the audience. I watched my husband.

He had always believed public humiliation was one of the worst things that could happen to a person. He guarded his reputation more carefully than he guarded our marriage. Now every instinct in him was fighting the reality that he could neither talk over the recording nor charm it into becoming something else.

“Turn this off,” he said.

The audiovisual director looked at me.

I shook my head.

The recording continued.

Celeste entered the image nineteen minutes later.

A murmur passed through the room when she appeared wearing the same coat she had arrived in that evening. There was no ambiguity about the date or the location. The security camera’s timestamp remained visible. The hallway furniture, the framed Whitmore family photographs, even the brass table beside the vault appeared clearly enough that several longtime donors recognized our home.

Recorded Marcus kissed Celeste.

Not furtively.

Not like a man stealing a moment.

He kissed her with the relaxed familiarity of someone who had done it often enough to stop fearing interruption.

The woman standing beside me made a small sound.

I did not know her name.

Perhaps she had expected financial misconduct to remain abstract. Numbers on paper were easy to separate from human behavior. Watching Marcus touch another woman inside his wife’s home made his contempt impossible to sanitize.

On the screen, Celeste laughed as Marcus unzipped the garment bag.

“Oh, Marcus.”

She pulled my gown free.

Recorded Marcus held it against her shoulders.

“You’ll look better in it.”

A few people shifted in their chairs.

The real Celeste whispered, “I didn’t know there were cameras.”

Marcus turned on her.

That sentence damaged him more than any denial could have.

She heard it too late.

“I mean—I didn’t know he was recording me.”

“He wasn’t,” I said. “The security system was.”

She looked at me with naked panic.

The screen showed Marcus returning to the vault.
