Those entities received foundation funds for services that either cannot be verified or were never performed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>Her face lost more color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPage two lists those companies,\u201d I said. \u201cPage three identifies individuals connected to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now people began leaning toward the trustees nearest them.<\/p>\n<p>Names traveled in whispers.<\/p>\n<p>Northbridge.<\/p>\n<p>Meridian.<\/p>\n<p>Stonebridge.<\/p>\n<p>Vale Advisory.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste reached the third page.<\/p>\n<p>I watched recognition strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>She looked around the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese companies aren\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Alden put his glasses back on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne is registered to your brother\u2019s business address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother paid the lease on your apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He still did not look at her.<\/p>\n<p>The judge at table one folded his report and placed it carefully beside his plate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much money are we discussing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allegations have not been proven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is correct. The audit is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For one instant he appeared relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Then I added, \u201cWhich is why the supporting records have already been provided to the appropriate investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman in the navy suit rose from the rear table.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus saw her.<\/p>\n<p>His relief vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought investigators to a charity gala?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invited everyone who had a legitimate interest in knowing what happened to the charity\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>He seemed to hear himself.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn, whatever you think you discovered, there are explanations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Celeste\u2019s apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaid through a foundation vendor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccounting classification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the jewelry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat jewelry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost admired the question.<\/p>\n<p>Even now she wanted to know which purchases had been discovered.<\/p>\n<p>I turned one page of my own copy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diamond necklace purchased in February. Earrings from Maison Delacroix in April. A watch in May.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s fingers went to her throat automatically.<\/p>\n<p>She was not wearing the necklace tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus rubbed his temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose were gifts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith money routed through charitable accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the auditors will be delighted to hear your explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone near the back whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Another guest lifted a phone.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut the phones away,\u201d he snapped.<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>He looked around the room as if suddenly discovering that authority required cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>I had watched him command rooms for years.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the room refuse him was almost physically strange.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste crossed toward the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Her heels caught slightly in the hem of my had admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand flew to her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I did not speak for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>There are moments when silence does more work than accusation.<\/p>\n<p>This was one.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I asked, \u201cSigned what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said I signed everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant\u2014I don\u2019t know what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus walked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>That movement told its own story.<\/p>\n<p>I glanced toward Samuel Pierce.<\/p>\n<p>He gave the smallest nod.<\/p>\n<p>We had expected denials.<\/p>\n<p>We had not expected Celeste to unravel this quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was your plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t invite you to steal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou set me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reviewed records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI verified evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His anger finally broke through the polished surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been pretending for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo have you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck harder than shouting would have.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the trustees, then the donors, then Celeste.<\/p>\n<p>The room he had expected to celebrate him had become filled with witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>But the financial records were only part of what waited.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus still believed the worst thing I could prove involved money.<\/p>\n<p>He did not yet understand why the gown, ring, and bracelet mattered tonight.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know I had the security footage.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the large projection screen behind the stage.<\/p>\n<p>For most of the evening it had displayed photographs of children helped by foundation programs.<\/p>\n<p>Now it went black.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audiovisual director stood near the control booth with one hand above the console.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Celeste.<\/p>\n<p>She was still wearing my wedding ring.<\/p>\n<p>Still wearing my grandmother\u2019s bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has also been some confusion tonight concerning ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste followed my gaze to her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus turned sharply toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first time all evening he sounded afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Not angry.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste laughing in my foyer.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus opening my jewelry case.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice asking whether I would cry.<\/p>\n<p>His answer.<\/p>\n<p>She usually does.<\/p>\n<p>For twelve years, Marcus had decided which version of me other people were allowed to see.<\/p>\n<p>The supportive wife.<\/p>\n<p>The emotional granddaughter.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who understood flowers but not finance.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who cried.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, he would have to watch the truth beside everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>I gave the audiovisual director one small nod.<\/p>\n<p>The screen came alive.<\/p>\n<p>The first frame showed the hallway outside my bedroom vault.<\/p>\n<p>A date appeared in the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Then a timestamp.<\/p>\n<p>2:14 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>On the screen, the recorded version of my husband entered the frame.<\/p>\n<p>In the ballroom, the real Marcus whispered my name.<\/p>\n<p>And beside
