came back to the same answer without you nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat answer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I want to try being married to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Not no matter what.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Miles wanted one household.<\/p>\n<p>Because when I had space to choose, I still chose.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm looked down.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes photo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm folded a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what I was allowed to hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer tightened my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have put one up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I needed the apartment to be a life, not a waiting room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was healthier than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Miles carried the dinosaur downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm and I stood alone in the empty room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny sadness?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis place saved me from forcing myself back into the house before you wanted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We handed over the keys.<\/p>\n<p>That night, Miles asked whether Dad was \u201cofficially officially\u201d home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo for now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo apartment,\u201d I said. \u201cDad lives here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles shouted so loudly the dog next door started barking.<\/p>\n<p>We let him celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>Hope did not have to be punished simply because certainty was impossible.<\/p>\n<p>He made another banner.<\/p>\n<p>WELCOME BACK DAD FOR REAL THIS TIME.<\/p>\n<p>I hung it above the kitchen doorway.<\/p>\n<p>It stayed for three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm never asked me to remove it.<\/p>\n<p>The first anniversary of the night I overheard him approached quietly.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the date before he did.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps he remembered and chose not to mention it.<\/p>\n<p>I woke that morning with a strange heaviness.<\/p>\n<p>The staircase looked exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p>The laundry basket still lived beside the washer.<\/p>\n<p>Miles\u2019s bedroom door still failed to close completely unless pushed hard.<\/p>\n<p>Objects retained no memory.<\/p>\n<p>People carried enough for them.<\/p>\n<p>That evening Malcolm found me standing in the hallway outside Miles\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I changed my answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne you wanted the date marked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was probably smart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles was downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>We could hear a cartoon playing.<\/p>\n<p>I touched the doorframe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stood right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou offered him the Switch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited for anger.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I felt sadness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems small now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Switch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bribe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot morally. I mean compared with everything underneath it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the loose thread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you hadn\u2019t heard\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlternate histories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>Right.<\/p>\n<p>There was no useful version where I failed to overhear him and we guessed how far he went.<\/p>\n<p>That road existed only as speculation.<\/p>\n<p>This was the road we had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want to do tonight?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to talk to Miles about the Switch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s still tied to secrecy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Miles was sprawled on the rug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember the Switch Dad promised you last year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm sat on the sofa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill thirty-seven dollars?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Miles looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have one hundred eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma gave me twenty for my birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s less impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cDad and I want to change something about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I getting one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you save enough, we\u2019ll match part of it as a birthday and holiday gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo secret deal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Mom know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly hope so,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Miles grinned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if I tell everybody?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t make it your entire personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that had once represented purchased silence became ordinary again.<\/p>\n<p>A toy.<\/p>\n<p>Something a child could save for.<\/p>\n<p>No moral weight attached.<\/p>\n<p>Later, after Miles went to bed, Malcolm stood in the kitchen holding the old photograph of Arthur and baby Miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Dad would hate how long this took.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur hated waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hated most things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm turned the picture over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was right that Miles was enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That answer mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I no longer needed Malcolm to tell me I had been enough.<\/p>\n<p>But it was good that he finally understood.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI think I\u2019m enough too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>The statement surprised me most of all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need Dad\u2019s money to prove I succeeded. I don\u2019t need another child to prove I built a bigger family than he did.
