Not softened. I repeated Vanessa’s warning as closely as I could remember it, including the part about our seventeen years together making him vulnerable to boredom.

By the time I finished, the warmth had disappeared from Irvin’s face.

“She said she was going to take me?”

“That was the message.”

“To you?”

“In this kitchen.”

He glanced toward the back door as though Vanessa might still be standing outside.

Then he looked genuinely angry.

Irvin was not loud when he was angry. That was one of the things I trusted about him. He got quieter. His jaw tightened, and he chose each word more carefully than usual.

“That’s it,” he said. “I’m not helping her again.”

“You don’t need to confront her.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“I mean it. I’m doing it anyway.”

The next time Vanessa texted because she heard scratching in her garage, Irvin replied that she should call pest control.

When her side door began sticking, he sent her the contact information for a handyman.

She asked if he could spare five minutes.

He said he couldn’t.

She tried again two days later.

Same answer.

I watched the change with a strange combination of relief and dread. Vanessa had been most comfortable while she could hide behind plausible excuses. Now the excuses had stopped working.

She didn’t retreat.

She became more obvious.

If Irvin was mowing, Vanessa somehow appeared near the fence. When he took the recycling out, she found a reason to check her mailbox. One Saturday morning she walked over carrying a plate of cookies in a top cut low enough that even Irvin looked uncomfortable.

“I made too many,” she said.

“You can leave them there,” he told her, pointing toward the porch table.

Vanessa stepped closer and touched his forearm.

It lasted only a second.

Irvin moved away.

I watched from inside.

She knew I was watching.

That was the point.

Later I asked Irvin whether he wanted one of her cookies.

He looked at me as if I had suggested eating roofing nails.

“No.”

“Good.”

“I’m not completely stupid, Claire.”

“I never said completely.”

He laughed despite himself, and for a moment the tension loosened.

But marriage is strange under pressure. Even when you trust someone, another person can force you to notice things you normally never inspect. I began paying attention to how Irvin held his phone. Whether he glanced toward Vanessa’s property. Whether her name appeared on the screen.

I hated that.

Not because I believed he wanted her.

Because I resented being made into a woman who checked.

One night, after I caught myself looking at his phone when it lit up beside the couch, I turned away so quickly that he noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He followed my eyes.

“You thought that was her.”

“I said nothing.”

He picked up the phone and handed it to me.

It was a message from our daughter about borrowing his car over the weekend.

I pushed the phone back.

“I don’t want to become this person.”

“What person?”

“The wife who flinches every time another woman’s name appears on her husband’s screen.”

Irvin was silent.

Then he said, “You aren’t supposed to have to manage this alone.”

That helped more than any grand declaration could have.

Still, Vanessa continued.

Her strategy had changed. Instead of manufacturing private emergencies, she created public opportunities to stand near Irvin.

She lingered during neighborhood conversations. She laughed too loudly at things he said. If several people gathered near a driveway, she positioned herself where he would have to acknowledge her.

Irvin became visibly cooler.

Vanessa pretended not to notice.

Then the invitation arrived.

It was printed on thick cream-colored paper despite being for a backyard barbecue.

Vanessa was hosting the neighborhood on Saturday afternoon.

Irvin’s name was written on the envelope.

Mine wasn’t.

He stood at the kitchen counter turning it over in his hands.

“She can’t possibly think I’m going to this.”

I took the invitation.

There was no mention of spouses. No “Irvin and Claire.” No “neighbors.” Just his name in Vanessa’s neat handwriting.

He reached for the trash.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

I read it again.

Something changed in me.

For weeks Vanessa had treated this situation like a private competition, one I had never agreed to enter. The invitation was different. It told me she wanted an audience.

Maybe she believed that if Irvin appeared in her backyard without me, the sight itself would become evidence.

Maybe she wanted neighbors whispering.

Maybe she wanted me to object so she could describe me as insecure.

Whatever the reason, suddenly I knew I didn’t want to prevent the scene.

I wanted her to have it.

“You should go,” I said.

Irvin stared.

“What?”

“Go to the barbecue.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Claire.”

“I’m serious.”

“You want me to attend a party hosted by a woman who told you she’s trying to break up our marriage?”

“Exactly.”

He studied my expression.

Slowly, suspicion replaced confusion.

“What are you planning?”

“I’m not completely sure yet.”

“That sentence worries me.”

“It shouldn’t.”

He waited.

I looked through the kitchen window at Vanessa’s house.

She had spent weeks pretending she required a husband to open jars, change batteries, tighten handles, carry boxes, move shelves, and solve ordinary household problems.

Suddenly, the shape of my answer became obvious.

“I need to go shopping.”

“For what?”

“Household supplies.”

He groaned.

I smiled for the first time all day.

Saturday arrived hot and bright.

By three-thirty, music was already drifting over the fence. Vanessa had decorated her backyard with strings of lights even though sunset was hours away. A long folding table held trays of food, bowls of salad, bottles of wine, lemonade, and stacks of brightly colored plates.

Cars lined the street.

Vanessa had invited nearly everyone.

Nearly.

At four fifteen, Irvin changed into khakis and a blue shirt.

He came into the kitchen, where I was arranging the contents of a large cardboard box.

“I still think this is insane.”

“Probably.”

“You could come with me.”

“I wasn’t invited.”

“That has never stopped you before.”

“It isn’t going to stop me today either.”

He looked into the box.

Then he closed his eyes.

“Oh, Claire.”

“What?”

“You bought batteries?”

“Several sizes.”

He picked up a jar opener.

“You really committed to the theme.”

“I believe gifts should be useful.”

He put it back and shook his head, though the corner of his mouth twitched.

“If this starts a neighborhood war—”

“She started the war.”

“That is not comforting.”

At four twenty, Irvin walked next door.

I stayed inside.

That was harder than I expected.

Through the window above the sink, I could see part of Vanessa’s backyard. Guests moved between tables. Children chased one another near the fence. Someone stood over the grill.

Then Vanessa saw Irvin.

Even from a distance, I could see her posture change.

She crossed directly toward him.

Her red dress was fitted, her hair loose over her shoulders.

She greeted him as if he were the one person she had been waiting for.

Irvin stepped back when she tried to close the distance.

I couldn’t hear the conversation.

I didn’t need to.

Twenty-five minutes passed.

Then thirty.

I lifted the box.

It was heavier than expected.

The screwdriver set alone weighed several pounds.

I carried it out the front door and walked next door.

The moment I entered Vanessa’s yard, conversations began to thin.

Irvin saw me first.

His expression almost ruined everything because he looked dangerously close to laughing.

Vanessa followed his gaze.

Her smile vanished.

“What are you doing here?”

I adjusted the box against my hip.

“I brought you something.”

“I didn’t invite you.”

“I noticed.”

A few neighbors suddenly found their plates extremely interesting.

I crossed to the patio table and set the box down.

Vanessa stared at it.

“What is that?”

“A housewarming gift.
