Cooperation helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you relieved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think you deserve to be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deserve not to be convicted of something they can\u2019t prove I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer was careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd morally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a different trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>At least he understood now.<\/p>\n<p>Miles came running down the stairs carrying one cleat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound one!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They searched together.<\/p>\n<p>I watched from the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>At one point Malcolm checked under the hallway bench\u2014the exact place he had sat when confronted with the closing transcript months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He found the second cleat beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Miles cheered.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm held it up like a trophy.<\/p>\n<p>For one ordinary second, we were almost the family we had been.<\/p>\n<p>Except we weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>And I no longer needed to pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>As they left, Malcolm turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have my first individual therapy appointment Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not telling you so you\u2019ll change your mind about us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you because if I only do things that you can see, I haven\u2019t learned much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied him.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence sounded different.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it promised anything.<\/p>\n<p>Because it asked nothing from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood luck Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward the car.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the door gently.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I overheard him bargaining with our son, I was not waiting for the next secret to reveal itself.<\/p>\n<p>The trust had been corrected.<\/p>\n<p>The false documents were exposed.<\/p>\n<p>Bell was facing consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Miles knew enough truth to stop carrying what belonged to adults.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm and I were separate.<\/p>\n<p>And the question ahead was no longer whether I could force him to confess.<\/p>\n<p>He had confessed.<\/p>\n<p>Now the harder question was whether truth arriving late could ever become the foundation for anything new.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=3019\">Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Therapy Changed the Way Malcolm Spoke, but the First Real Test Came When Miles Asked a Question Neither of Us Could Avoid<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telling Miles about the separation took eleven minutes.
