I assumed\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou assumed I signed something after telling you to stop two days earlier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought maybe you\u2019d changed your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout speaking to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cCaroline told me you had dropped something off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you\u2019d sent paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune nineteenth. That morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same morning the PDF was created.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExact words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018Jenna\u2019s form is ready.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked, \u201cDid she say Jenna signed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>Because asking might have broken the story Malcolm wanted to believe.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you think had happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you\u2019d decided to let me submit the extension while we kept talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would I do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked devastated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to know badly enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was painfully accurate.<\/p>\n<p>His phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Cho.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm answered, listened, and his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice came through clipped and urgent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalcolm, do not go to your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour IT administrator just contacted me.
