The requirement concerning a second child is removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paper shifted near the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI created that requirement because I wanted Malcolm to think beyond himself. It was arrogant. Money cannot produce character. It can reveal character, and I am afraid mine has revealed things I do not like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I almost stopped the recording.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know my son loves Jenna. I know he loves Miles. I do not question that. I question what he permits himself to do once he believes he is owed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have watched him turn Jenna\u2019s refusal into a negotiation. I have watched him describe another child as though the question is when, not whether. Not biologically. Not by adoption. Not by guardianship. No child should enter a home carrying the burden of being worth money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words hit me harder than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>Guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had known that loophole might be explored too.<\/p>\n<p>He had anticipated it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Bell discuss guardianship with Dad?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel answered through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur continued on the recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Malcolm wants another child and Jenna wants another child, then I hope they have one however they choose. If she does not, then my money ends as a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording paused while Arthur drank something.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the part I had not expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiles should never know any of this while he is young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should never wonder whether he was insufficient.
