mattered.

“What do we do?” I asked.

“Preserve everything.”

Caroline said she would photograph her notes and the printed email before moving them anywhere.

Elaine said she would locate her own complete files.

Malcolm looked increasingly sick.

Finally he said, “I need to talk to Richard.”

“No,” Elaine and I said together.

Malcolm stared at us.

Elaine continued.

“Do not warn him about what has been found.”

“He’s been my attorney.”

“Then get another one.”

I thought of Rachel Levin.

My attorney.

For the first time, the phrase no longer sounded temporary.

I ended Caroline’s call after thanking her.

Elaine remained connected.

Before she hung up, she said, “Jenna, I owe you an apology too.”

“For what?”

“For recognizing warning signs and treating them as Malcolm’s problem instead of yours.”

I looked at him.

“That seems to be a theme.”

She ended the call.

The nursery went quiet.

Malcolm sat on the floor with his back against the wall.

I remained standing.

After a while he said, “Do you think I’m a terrible person?”

The question exhausted me.

“I think you’ve done terrible things.”

His eyes closed.

“That’s not the same answer.”

“No.”

He looked up.

“Do you think there’s any way back?”

I could not answer.

Not yet.

I placed the blue folder inside my bag.

Then I noticed something sticking from the back pocket.

A folded sheet I had not seen earlier.

I pulled it free.

It was a photocopy of a check.

Payable to Richard Bell.

Amount: $75,000.

Memo line: CONSULTING – TRUST RESOLUTION.

Malcolm stood.

“I’ve never seen that.”

The check was drawn from the inheritance account.

Dated two weeks before the first $480,000 distribution.

And the signature at the bottom belonged to Malcolm.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The
