I didn\u2019t put it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Bell have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo reason he would have had access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContractors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wouldn\u2019t know what it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lives across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else had a key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly me after the locks changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Miles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA spare in my desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone with access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy assistant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s her name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name registered.<\/p>\n<p>I had met Caroline twice.<\/p>\n<p>Organized, efficient, fiercely protective of Malcolm\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know about the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know about the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s voice sharpened through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalcolm, what exactly did you tell your assistant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I was handling family estate matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ever deliver documents for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat folder may have gone through her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the shape of another hidden witness forming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Caroline know about the adoption?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone except me.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she\u2019ll answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He dialed.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline answered on the first ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Malcolm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline, I need to ask you something strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you remember a blue folder from Elaine Porter\u2019s office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>A very long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Caroline said, \u201cAre you with Jenna?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word sounded almost relieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been waiting for you to ask me about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s voice changed when she spoke directly to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than Malcolm thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the yellow nursery walls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did the folder get here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s voice shook now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me to bring it from the office. You said it was duplicate paperwork you didn\u2019t need. Then you asked whether the shredder downstairs could handle thick packets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Miles found the other papers.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Nintendo bribe.<\/p>\n<p>Before the nursery was finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI brought the folder here instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I read enough to know it was about Arthur changing the inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy hide it under the crib mattress?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same word Malcolm had used from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Only this time it sounded true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Malcolm was preparing this room. I thought nobody would look under a mattress in an empty house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm pressed both hands against the back of his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline, why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day Miles came to the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>Teacher-training day.<\/p>\n<p>The same day Malcolm had taken Miles to the secret house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalcolm got angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout an email from Jenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat email?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne where you told him you were done discussing another baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went cold.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that email.<\/p>\n<p>Not exactly when.<\/p>\n<p>But I remembered writing something like it after one of our worst arguments about fertility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Malcolm do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cHe told me he didn\u2019t care what you said right then.
