dresser.”

“And?”

“That’s it.”

“You furnished a nursery.”

“Barely.”

“Stop minimizing.”

“I know.”

My eyes burned.

“Who helped you?”

“No one.”

“You assembled a crib alone in a house your wife didn’t know existed for a baby she never agreed to adopt.”

He did not answer.

“Do you hear that sentence?”

“Yes.”

“Does it sound sane to you?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

For the first time, Malcolm sounded frightened by himself.

I got into my car.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“To see the house.”

“Jenna, don’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to show you differently.”

“How?”

“After you agreed.”

Again.

The entire structure depended on my eventual surrender.

“I’m sending you the address,” he said. “I’ll meet you there.”

“I already have it.”

“How?”

“My lawyer found it.”

Silence.

Then, quietly, “Okay.”

I drove.

The neighborhood was newer than ours.

Tree-lined streets.

Wide sidewalks.

Children’s bicycles on lawns.

The kind of place people choose deliberately when they imagine a family.

Malcolm was waiting in the driveway.

He held a key.

Neither of us spoke as he opened the door.

The house smelled faintly of fresh paint.

Most rooms were empty.

The kitchen had new cabinet hardware.

The floors had been refinished.

Upstairs, Malcolm stopped before the final bedroom.

He did not open it.

I did.

The walls were pale yellow.

A white crib stood beneath the window.

A small wooden dresser sat against the opposite wall.

On top of it was a stuffed rabbit.

I recognized the rabbit.

Miles had chosen it months earlier during a trip to a children’s store.

He had begged me to buy it.

Malcolm had said no because we didn’t need another stuffed animal.

I turned.

“He picked this?”

Malcolm’s face collapsed.

“Yes.”

My throat tightened.

“When?”

“The day he was with me.”

The teacher-training day.

Not the office.

Not merely Elaine Porter’s car-side meeting.

Malcolm had brought Miles here.

“You showed him the nursery.”

“Yes.”

“And told me he spent the day at your office.”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell him this room was?”

Malcolm looked toward the crib.

“I said maybe someday it would belong to his brother or sister.”

The ache inside me became strangely clean.

Not confusion anymore.

Not suspicion.

Truth.

Miles had not stumbled accidentally into Malcolm’s plans.

He had been recruited into the fantasy months before he was bribed into protecting it.

I touched the edge of the crib.

Then I saw something tucked beneath the mattress.

A blue folder.

Malcolm noticed it at the same moment.

His face went white.

“What is that?”

He moved toward me.

I pulled it free first.

Across the front, in Elaine Porter’s handwriting, were four words.

ARTHUR CALDWELL – FINAL NOTES.

Malcolm stared at the folder.

“I didn’t put that there.”

I looked at him.

For once, I believed him.

Click
