You do not get to complain because I need one evening to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed briefly into something softer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really do want another child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>That was the worst part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d I said. \u201cI just don\u2019t know anymore whether you ever cared what I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I left him standing beside the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>At my mother\u2019s house, Miles ran into my arms before I had fully stepped through the door.<\/p>\n<p>He smelled like crayons and the cinnamon cookies my mother always kept in a tin above the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked past me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe promised we\u2019d build my rocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat rocket?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor science day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Miles pulled a cardboard tube from behind the sofa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disappointment in his face was immediate and innocent.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can still build it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Dad knows how to make the fins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miles considered this, then smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While we worked at my mother\u2019s dining table, my phone vibrated repeatedly inside my purse.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>After the third call, my mother glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs everything all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head before she could ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in front of Miles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later, as we carried the half-finished rocket toward the car, another message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This one was not from Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>It was from an unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>MRS. CALDWELL, THIS IS DANA REEVES FROM FAMILY SERVICES CENTER.
