I didn\u2019t choose an interrogation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached for his briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed seated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Not the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the screen showing his car\u2019s recorded morning trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you went there before work today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped to the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Then rose to mine.<\/p>\n<p>Something changed in him.<\/p>\n<p>The irritation disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>He became still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you been checking up on me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince I learned checking was necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unhealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo is teaching our son to lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked around the restaurant again.<\/p>\n<p>Then sat.<\/p>\n<p>His voice, when he spoke, was almost a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Miles tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing you didn\u2019t force him to carry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only answer you need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied me.<\/p>\n<p>I could see calculation beginning again.<\/p>\n<p>He was trying to determine what I knew.<\/p>\n<p>I decided not to help him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I asked, \u201cDoes Dana know about Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every bit of color vanished from Malcolm\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>He did not ask which Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>He did not ask what his dead father had to do with adoption.<\/p>\n<p>He simply stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was the answer.<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat became strangely slow.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant seemed to recede.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm\u2019s mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>I had guessed.<\/p>\n<p>I had not known whether his father\u2019s estate had ever entered those meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Now I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did you tell her about the inheritance?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He stood again.<\/p>\n<p>This time he did not care who looked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have my own car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m picking Miles up at five from my mother\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother has him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked her this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I knew we needed to talk without him hearing us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the restaurant door opened, Malcolm looked afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Not annoyed.<\/p>\n<p>Not defensive.<\/p>\n<p>Afraid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI planned to protect Miles from another adult conversation he should never have been placed inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then his eyes dropped to my purse.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he imagined papers inside it.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he finally understood why I had mentioned Arthur by name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much do you know?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>I stood and picked up my bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to know there were never any letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not move.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped around the table.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Malcolm said my name.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped but did not turn.<\/p>\n<p>His next words were barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t supposed to find that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exact phrase struck harder than any denial could have.<\/p>\n<p>Yet.<\/p>\n<p>There had been a timeline.<\/p>\n<p>A plan.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever Malcolm intended to do with the adoption process, he had expected to reach some later point before telling me why another child suddenly mattered so much.<\/p>\n<p>I finally turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I get home,\u201d I said, \u201cyou\u2019re going to tell me what was supposed to happen before I found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face answered before his mouth did.<\/p>\n<p>He had hoped for much more than a conversation.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=2999\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Malcolm Finally Explained the Plan He Had Built Around My Consent, and One Missing Signature Revealed He Had Gone Further<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For perhaps three seconds nobody moved.
