Malcolm’s morning belonged to the second category. He had left before seven for a meeting that ended before eight, then claimed he was headed toward the office. If the will meant what I thought it meant, that meeting mattered. I needed to know where he had gone before I gave him the chance to shape another explanation around whatever I already knew.

I started with the easiest detail.

Our car insurance app tracked mileage for a discount program Malcolm had enrolled us in the previous year. I had forgotten about it until I opened the folder where we kept household apps. The program did not show a precise live map, but it recorded trip lengths and approximate start and end times.

Malcolm’s car had traveled eleven miles beginning at 6:43 that morning.

The trip lasted twenty-seven minutes.

His office was fourteen miles from our house in the opposite direction.

I sat at the kitchen table staring at the numbers.

Another trip began at 7:36 and lasted eighteen minutes. That one ended near the business district where Malcolm worked.

So he had gone somewhere first.

I searched the area roughly eleven miles from home. The map covered several neighborhoods, medical offices, a courthouse annex, a church, a community center, and dozens of businesses. Without an exact destination, it told me almost nothing.

Then I remembered the inheritance clause.

Two children.

Biological or legally adopted.

My fingers went cold on the trackpad.

I searched for adoption services in that area.

Three results appeared.

One was a law office specializing in family adoption. Another was a nonprofit support organization. The third was called Family Services Center.

The address sat inside the radius suggested by Malcolm’s morning trip.

I stared at the words until they blurred.

There could be another explanation. Family Services Center was broad enough to offer counseling, parenting classes, assistance programs, perhaps even services for Arthur’s estate that I knew nothing about.

I called the number.

A woman answered after two rings. “Family Services Center. How may I direct your call?”

I nearly hung up.

Instead I said, “Hi. I’m wondering whether you handle adoption consultations.”

“We do.”

The room seemed to contract around me.

“Domestic adoption?”

“Yes, ma’am. We have an intake coordinator who can explain the different programs.”

“Do you meet with prospective parents before they apply?”

“Absolutely. Initial information meetings can be scheduled individually or as a couple.”

Individually.

I pressed my thumb against the edge of the table.

“Do both spouses have to attend?”

“For an adoption involving a married couple, both spouses would ultimately need to participate in the process. I’m just gathering information.”

I ended the call.

For a long time I listened to the refrigerator humming.

I thought of Malcolm asking me whether adoption was something I could ever imagine. The first time had been months earlier. I had told him that adoption was not a backup plan for infertility and that a child deserved parents who wanted that child, not parents trying to solve a problem. Malcolm had agreed so quickly that I thought he understood.

Had he already known about the will then?

The front door opened.

I stood so fast my chair legs scraped the floor.

Malcolm walked in carrying his briefcase.

“Hey.”

It took everything I had not to look guilty.

“You’re home.”

“I said I might be early.”

He set his keys in the bowl by the door. “You too.”

“Nina let me go.”

“Everything okay?”

“Headache.”

His eyes moved over me, assessing.

“You should lie down.”

“I might.”

He removed his jacket. “Where’s Miles?”

“After-school art club.”

“Until four?”

“Four fifteen.”

The knowledge of our schedule passed between us.

We had nearly an hour alone.

Malcolm loosened his tie. “Maybe that gives us a chance.”

“To talk?”

“That was the idea.”

I looked at him and wondered how much he had rehearsed.

He walked into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, then stopped when he saw me still standing near the table.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re doing that thing.”

“What thing?”

“Watching me as if I’m about to confess to murder.”

Despite everything, I almost smiled.
