How many crashes I\u2019d responded to. How becoming a father changed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd none of that was about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>The letter had been another attempt to make my throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Evan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry I let fear make me run a second time after I had come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m sorry that for fourteen years you didn\u2019t know enough to decide what any of it meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That last part landed hardest.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He did not say he had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Did not mention his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Did not remind me he became a paramedic.<\/p>\n<p>Did not ask me to forgive him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad would have approved.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that was why I finally knew what I wanted to say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgive you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan stared.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s hand stopped halfway toward her coffee.<\/p>\n<p>I surprised myself too.<\/p>\n<p>The words did not create music.<\/p>\n<p>No physical release.<\/p>\n<p>No magical reduction in memory.<\/p>\n<p>They simply sat between us.<\/p>\n<p>Evan shook his I\u2019m definitely not saying cancer caused the crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t want to keep you at the intersection anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked down.<\/p>\n<p>A tear fell onto the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He wiped it away quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t make it a reward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked back up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Claire smiled at me.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately became coffee, we stood outside.<\/p>\n<p>Evan still held the sealed letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShred it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy juvenile review is next month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what they\u2019ll decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s restitution or community service or anything\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cRichard once told me something I never wrote in the statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body tightened automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Evan saw it and laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the garage, after he asked what I was going to do next, I told him I didn\u2019t know whether I\u2019d live long enough to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Then quit wasting the part you know you have.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I
