Throwing anything away was dangerous.”

Fair.

She opened the first page.

The date was the day after my crash.

At the top Dad had written:

DANIEL — QUESTIONS.

My throat tightened.

Below it:

1. Why was Marcus at the scene?

2. Silver paint on left bumper?

3. Evan says Danny spoke.

4. “Tell Dad I knew.”

5. What did he know?

6. Why did Marcus leave?

7. Find account paperwork.

I stared.

Dad had begun the investigation almost immediately.

Not five months later with Keller.

The next morning.

I turned the page.

Names.

Thomas.

Evan.

Marcus.

Plant supervisor.

Insurance adjuster.

Then one line circled three times:

DO NOT ASK DANNY AGAIN UNTIL DOCTOR CLEARS IT.

I looked at Mom.

“What does that mean?”

She sat.

“The neurologist told us not to pressure you to remember.”

That was new.

“He specifically said that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You were becoming agitated.”

“I don’t remember.”

“I know.”

Mom described the first week after the crash.

I woke confused.

Asked repetitive questions.

Remembered pieces, then contradicted them.

One morning I insisted Marcus had been driving the truck.

Another time I said Dad had been in the road.

Neither was true.

Or at least not supported.

The neurologist warned them that memory after head trauma could be unreliable.

Do not interrogate.

Do not reinforce guesses.

Let recovery happen.

“That’s why Dad stopped asking.”

“At first.”

“At first,” Mom agreed.

That distinction mattered.

Dad’s initial silence had medical reasoning.

His later silence did not.

I turned another page.

Dad had written:

Doctor says wait.

Then underneath:

Waiting is not lying.

Three days later, another line:

At what point does waiting become lying?

My throat tightened.

There it was.

Dad arguing with himself on paper.

Mom read over my shoulder.

“I never saw that.”

Another page.

Marcus denied following Daniel.

Paint says otherwise?

Check salvage.

Evan confirms dark sedan.

Daniel remembers headlights beside him.

Then, underlined:

DO NOT TELL HIM UNTIL I KNOW WHAT IS REAL.

I sat back.

Claire took the chair beside me.

“Daniel.”

“I’m okay.”

And I was.

Angry.

Sad.

But okay.

Dad had not started from cowardice alone.

He had started from uncertainty.

My own memory had been unreliable.

Doctors told him not to push.

Evidence conflicted.

He wanted facts.

That part I understood.

Then the investigation uncovered theft.

Marcus.

Evan.

Thomas.

Dad’s own interference.

By then, the original medical reason for waiting had become habit.

Fear took over from caution.

I turned more pages.

The handwriting changed over months.

Neat at first.

Then hurried.

Keller hired.

Account confirmed.

Marcus used Daniel’s identity.

Thomas knew more.

Then a page with one sentence:

I should tell Danny now.

The next page was dated nine days later.

Didn’t.

My chest hurt.

Another month.

Tell him Sunday.

Then:

Couldn’t.

Then:

After next doctor visit.

Then:

No.

Just tell him.

Blank page.

I closed the notebook.

Enough.

Mom stared at it.

“I wish I had read that.”

“Would it have changed anything?”

“I might have understood him.”

“Maybe.”

“Or been angrier sooner.”

“Also possible.”

Evan had barely moved.

He looked toward the notebook.

“Richard showed me one page
