knew Marcus had my backpack.”

“Yes.”

“Did he know Natalie saw it?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t that appear on the tape?”

“I don’t know.”

Keller turned a page.

“But there’s something Richard did not know.”

My body tightened again.

“What?”

“Natalie lied to him about one detail.”

I stared.

“What detail?”

“The folder.”

“She said she saw it.”

“She did.”

“What was the lie?”

“She told Richard Marcus still had it when she left.”

I looked at Claire.

“He did.”

Fourteen years later, yes.

But Keller shook his head.

“Not immediately.”

“What does that mean?”

“Natalie took it.”

My pulse jumped.

“She took my folder from Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“One night.”

“Why?”

“To protect it.”

I stared.

“She knew enough to understand Marcus wanted the documents gone.”

“What did she do with it?”

“She copied everything.”

The diner seemed to become quiet around us.

“Where are the copies?”

Keller opened his leather folder.

“Here.”

He placed a sealed evidence envelope on the table.

Inside were photocopies made fourteen years ago.

My investment statement.

My handwritten note to Dad.

Identification records.

Everything.

Independent copies.

Marcus’s folder was no longer the only surviving version.

Keller said, “Natalie returned the original folder to Marcus the next morning because she was afraid he would know she took it.”

“And she kept the copies.”

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because she thought someday someone might ask.”

My throat tightened.

Someone had.

Dad.

But she still lied to him about having copies.

“Why didn’t she give them to Dad?”

Keller looked uncomfortable.

“She was afraid of Richard too.”

That surprised me.

“My father never threatened her.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because of what he said when she came to your house.”

“What?”

Keller checked the transcript.

Then read carefully.

“Richard told her, ‘If Marcus did this, I’m going to make sure he never gets close enough to Daniel to hurt him again.’”

I stared at the table.

Protective.

Furious.

Dad.

Natalie heard threat where Dad probably meant distance and accountability.

Maybe he meant more.

We could not ask.

“So she kept the copies.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Until I interviewed her.”

“Eight months later.”

“Yes.”

“And you never gave Dad the interview.”

“He stopped the investigation before I finished the supplemental report.”

I rubbed my face.

The truth had existed in a file Dad paid for.

He simply never collected it.

Another unfinished exit.

Claire asked, “Where is Natalie now?”

Keller hesitated.

“She still lives nearby.”

I looked at him.

“Have you spoken to her recently?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

My head lifted.

“Why?”

“Harold called me after you found locker 214.”

Harold shrugged.

“I suspected we might need old witnesses.”

“And Natalie agreed to talk?”

Keller nodded.

“She has been expecting this day longer than you realize.”

I stared at the old photograph.

Marcus.

Natalie.

Two young people standing close enough to believe whatever mistakes they were making could still be contained.

“What does she want?”

“To give you something.”

“What?”

Keller slid a small envelope toward me.

My name was written across it.

Not Dad’s handwriting.

Not Marcus’s.

Natalie’s.

“What is this?”

“She asked me not to open it.”

I picked it up.

The envelope was thin.

Inside was a single photograph.

I pulled it free.

The image showed my wrecked car at the intersection.

Taken from farther away than police photographs.

Emergency lights.

Broken glass.

A dark pickup.

And at the edge of the frame, almost outside the photograph, stood a man beside a car.

Marcus.

Next to him stood Natalie.

But she was pointing toward someone else.

A third figure near the ambulance.

I brought the photograph closer.

Older man.

Work shirt.

Hands on his hips.

Dad.

On the back, Natalie had written:

Richard saw Marcus at the scene that night.

He always knew Marcus had been there.
