door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was locked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cThe crash damaged the lock. I pulled hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd instead of helping me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you were breathing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took your backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s voice cracked for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could barely speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard Evan coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Evan see you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan whispered, \u201cThe passenger door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I came back, it was open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face twisted with realization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it opened during the crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Had seen me unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>Had taken evidence from my car.<\/p>\n<p>Then fled.<\/p>\n<p>Evan returned afterward and called for help.<\/p>\n<p>My anger became something quieter.<\/p>\n<p>More dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhere is the folder now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI burned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words felt cheap.<\/p>\n<p>Not because apologies were worthless.<\/p>\n<p>Because he had waited fourteen years and only offered one after being cornered by evidence.<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evan\u2019s phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen toward me.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>You want the rest of the truth?
