I worked twelve hours a week at the campus library and occasionally fixed computers for people who paid me in pizza.”

Evan looked at the recorder.

“Richard obviously thought something existed.”

“That doesn’t mean he was right.”

Thomas shook his head slowly.

“Richard wasn’t careless with things.

Money was not one of them.

He kept receipts for lawn-mower parts.

He once drove back across town because a cashier gave him five dollars too much change.

If he said Marcus had used my name for money, he had documents somewhere.

Claire reached for the recorder.

“Is there more tape?”

Thomas examined the cassette.

“About twenty minutes, maybe.”

“Then play it.”

I stopped him.

“Wait.”

Three faces turned toward me.

I needed to separate what we knew from what Dad believed.

Otherwise his certainty would become ours simply because he was dead and had left a recording.

“What do we actually know?”

Claire understood immediately.

“Marcus used his expired plant badge.”

“Yes.”

Thomas added, “The access log proves keys.”

“Yes.”

“Marcus knew I was at his apartment?”

Evan frowned.

“I thought you were.”

“So did I.”

Claire looked at me.

“But you’re questioning that now.”

“I’m questioning everything now.”

Thomas said, “Your father believed Marcus knew you would be driving home.”

“Yes.”

“But we don’t know how.”

“Correct.”

I looked at the cassette player.

“And we have absolutely no idea what ‘Danny’s money’ means.”

Nobody contradicted me.

“Now play it.”

Thomas pressed the button.

Static returned.

Dad’s voice emerged after several seconds.

“If I’m right about this, Linda is going to kill me.”

I almost laughed.

Mom appeared in Dad’s recordings mostly as a future consequence.

He continued.

“I found the account.”

My shoulders tightened.

Dad explained that when I was nine, my grandfather—his father—had created an investment account for Aaron and another for me.

I knew about that.

Sort of.

Grandpa Mercer died when I was twelve.

I remembered Dad saying he had left “a little college money.”

But the account never paid for college.

Scholarships covered most of tuition.

Loans and my parents handled the rest.

I assumed the investment had been small or lost during one of the market downturns Dad complained about.

Apparently not.

Dad’s recorded voice continued.

“Frank put eleven thousand dollars into each account.”

Thomas whistled softly.

At nine, eleven thousand dollars might as well have been eleven million.

Dad said Aaron’s account remained intact until he turned twenty-one.

Mine did not.

I leaned closer.

“What?”

The tape continued.

A withdrawal had been made four months before my twentieth birthday.

Not eleven thousand.

More.

The account had grown.

Twenty-eight thousand, four hundred and sixty dollars.

Every cent withdrawn.

I stood.

“No.”

Claire looked at me.

“I never withdrew anything.”

Dad answered from the recorder.

“Danny did not take it.”

My skin prickled.

He had investigated.

Of course he had.

The withdrawal request was processed using mailed documents.

Signature.

Social Security number.

Copy of identification.

Account information.

All supposedly mine.

Dad compared the signature to my handwriting.

It was close.

Not close enough.

He called the investment company.

They confirmed the funds had been transferred to a bank account opened in my name.

That account was closed within three weeks.

“Identity theft,” Claire said.

“Yes.”

But fourteen years ago, I had never known.

Dad explained why.

Statements from the investment account normally went to our family home.

Three months before the withdrawal, the mailing address was changed.

I felt cold.

“To where?”

Dad gave the address.

I knew it immediately.

Marcus’s apartment building.

Not his unit.

Another unit in the same building.

Vacant at the time.

Mail left in the common entrance could easily be collected.

Thomas muttered something under his breath.

Dad continued.

He had learned about the missing money only after my crash because Grandpa’s accountant called to discuss tax paperwork.

Dad initially assumed I had withdrawn it.

He intended to ask me.

Then I nearly died.

The conversation was postponed.

While I was recovering, Dad began checking the paperwork himself.

That was when Marcus visited and asked about the truck.

Two mysteries collided.

Dad’s suspicion began there.

Claire whispered, “So Marcus had your identity before the accident.”

“Yes.”

Evan looked sick.

“And he knew Daniel might eventually discover the money.”

I turned toward him.

“When?”

“If Richard had started asking questions.”

Dad’s recording continued.

Marcus had used part of the stolen money to pay debts.

Dad found one.

A collection account settled for nearly six thousand dollars.

Another transfer appeared to have gone to a used-car dealer.

The rest became difficult to trace.

But Dad found something more important.

The fraudulent bank account required identification.

Not merely numbers.

A photocopy of my driver’s license.

Dad knew exactly where Marcus could have gotten one.

I closed my eyes.

His apartment.

I had left my wallet there countless times.

Sometimes overnight.

I had trusted him.

That fact hurt in a way the money did not.

Dad said he confronted Marcus.

Marcus denied taking the investment money.

Dad mentioned the mailing address.

Marcus stopped talking.

Dad mentioned the forged signature.

Marcus told him to leave.

Dad mentioned the bank account.

Marcus threatened to call police.

Dad apparently said, “Please do.”

I laughed despite myself.

Claire smiled.

“That’s Richard.”

“Yes.”

Dad did not leave.

He asked Marcus one question.

Did you know Daniel was driving home the night of the accident?

The tape went quiet.

Then Dad said:

“He said yes.”

My stomach dropped.

Evan covered his mouth.

Dad continued.

Marcus knew because I told him.

I stared at the recorder.

“No.”

I didn’t remember.

Dad said Marcus claimed I had called from his apartment earlier that evening and told Dad I would bring the car home.

That part sounded possible.

But Marcus had overheard.

Later, at the party, Evan talked about going to pick up “Mercer.”

Marcus understood immediately which Mercer.

Then he gave Evan the truck key.

Claire said, “But why?”

Dad’s recording answered only partly.

Marcus claimed panic.

He knew Dad was looking into the investment account.

He knew I was driving home.

He knew Evan was drunk.

He gave Evan the key because he hoped something would delay me.

Delay.

Not kill.

That was Marcus’s version.

Dad did not believe it.

Neither did I.

Dad said:

“You do not hand a drunk seventeen-year-old keys to a truck because you want somebody delayed.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“No.”

Dad continued.

Marcus insisted he never expected a collision.

He thought Evan might get stopped.

Might get lost.

Might arrive at Marcus’s apartment and create confusion.

Anything that bought time.

Time for what?

To retrieve documents from my things.

Specifically, a folder in my backpack.

I frowned.

“What folder?”

Then I remembered.

Tax paperwork.

Grandpa’s accountant had sent forms to my parents.

Dad had asked me to bring some documents home.

I had carried them in my backpack.

Marcus knew.

He had probably seen them.

Dad said the folder contained an annual account statement.

The first piece of paper that could reveal the investment account still existed—or should have.

Marcus needed it gone before I or Dad saw it.

I sat slowly.

“So he wanted my backpack.”

Claire nodded.

“And if Evan reached you first—”

“He could get me out of the apartment.”

Evan looked horrified.

“I thought I was helping.”

“No.”

“You weren’t.”

He accepted that.

Dad’s voice grew quieter.

He said Marcus claimed the plan was simple.

Give Evan the key.

Let him drive to Marcus’s apartment.

Once I left with Evan, Marcus would take the folder from my backpack or apartment belongings.

Except I had already left.

I had apparently decided not to wait for anyone.

Dad had called me again.

Told me to drive carefully and come home.

I left Marcus’s apartment before Evan arrived.

Evan, traveling toward me, reached the intersection.

Then everything broke.

Claire asked, “Did Marcus follow you?”

The tape continued.

Dad wondered the same thing.

He found a witness.

A gas-station clerk.

The clerk remembered Marcus’s car because he bought cigarettes shortly after the crash.

The station sat less than half a mile from the intersection.

Marcus had been nearby.

My pulse climbed.

Dad said he confronted him again.

Marcus admitted following Evan.

He claimed he wanted to retrieve the truck key before Evan did something stupid.

Too late.

He saw the crash from a distance.

And then?

He left.

My stomach turned.

Someone had shouted after the collision.

Evan’s statement mentioned a voice.

He had never known whether it was real.

I looked at him.

“You heard someone.”

His eyes widened.

“Yes.”

“That was Marcus.”

Dad confirmed it.

Marcus admitted shouting.

Then he drove away.

He did not call 911.

He did not approach my car.

He left Evan to decide what happened next.

The room went very quiet.

Evan whispered, “I thought I imagined him.”

“You didn’t.”

His face twisted.

“I went back because I heard someone yell.”

Dad’s tape corrected even that.

The smoke mattered.

The guilt mattered.

But Marcus’s shout had broken Evan’s panic long enough for him to realize another person was still inside the wreck.

Marcus fled.

Evan drove two blocks.

Stopped.

Returned.

The man who had set pieces in motion ran farther than the drunk teenager he manipulated.

I did not know what to do with that.

Dad continued.

He wanted to report Marcus immediately.

Identity theft.

Theft from the plant.

Possible reckless endangerment.

Maybe worse.

But Marcus threatened him.

Not physically.

He threatened to tell police that Dad had concealed Evan’s identity.

My jaw tightened.

There it was.

The trap.

Dad had already waited.

Already accepted Thomas’s plea.

Already chosen silence.

Marcus knew enough to use that silence against him.

If Dad reported Marcus, the entire story emerged.

Including Dad’s decision not to identify Evan immediately.

Dad said on the tape:

“I let one wrong choice make me vulnerable to another.”

The same pattern from his letter.

Silence renewing itself.

Dad did not excuse it.

He sounded disgusted with himself.

He also feared what the investigation would do to me.

I was recovering.

Physical therapy.

Nightmares I barely remembered now.

Pain medication.

Anger.

Dad convinced himself he would handle Marcus privately and tell me later.

Later became years.

Again.

The recording paused.

When Dad returned, his voice was calmer.

“I recovered most of Danny’s money.”

I sat upright.

“What?”

Thomas stared at the recorder.

Dad explained.

Marcus returned eighteen thousand dollars over the following two years.

Not willingly.

Dad forced him into a written repayment agreement.

The rest Dad replaced himself.

I felt something crack open inside me.

Dad had paid it.

From where?

The recording answered.

Savings.

Overtime.

Selling the fishing boat Grandpa left him.

I remembered that boat disappearing.

Dad told me the engine had become too expensive to repair.

Another lie.

Smaller.

Still a lie.

The account was rebuilt under a new structure.

Dad never told me.

“Why?” Claire whispered.

Dad said why.

Because by the time the money was restored, telling me required telling me everything.

Marcus.

Evan.

The crash.

His silence.

He kept postponing.

Again.

Again.

Again.

The tape approached its end.

Dad gave one final piece of information.

The recovered account had been transferred into a trust.

My trust.

Still mine.

Untouched.

He recorded the name of the financial institution and an account reference number.

Then he said:

“Danny thinks he has no money because I taught him to live like he has no money.”

A pause.

“That part I do not regret.”

I laughed through tears.

Neither did I.

Then Dad’s voice became serious.

“The money is not the important part.”

Static.

“Marcus is.”

My laughter disappeared.

“If I die before I tell Danny, he needs to know Marcus did not merely steal from him.”

A pause.

“He used Evan.”

Another pause.

“And he used me.”

Dad inhaled.

“But there is one thing I still cannot prove.”

The tape hissed.

“I cannot prove whether Marcus wanted the crash.”

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

My phone vibrated on the table.

Marcus.

A new message.

I looked down.

You should leave your father’s old accusations buried, Daniel. He was wrong about what happened that night.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Marcus Warned Me to Leave Dad’s Accusations Buried, So I Asked the One Question He Couldn’t Answer Without Revealing Himself

The recorder clicked off.
