He said, \u2018Then drive yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought they were Dad\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>He had asked Marcus whether he knew where Evan planned to go.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said no.<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not believe him.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he had proof.<\/p>\n<p>Because Marcus asked one question when Dad confronted him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot \u2018Did Daniel get hurt?\u2019 Not \u2018Is Evan okay?\u2019 He asked whether Danny knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad had wondered the same.<\/p>\n<p>The tape hissed.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A click.<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed rewind accidentally, stopped it, and stared at the machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas took the cassette.<\/p>\n<p>He turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may be another side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flipped it.<\/p>\n<p>Inserted it.<\/p>\n<p>Pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>Static.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad\u2019s voice again.<\/p>\n<p>Quieter.<\/p>\n<p>This recording had been made later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAugust third.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Almost a month after the crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know why Marcus asked whether Danny knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>Claire moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause filled the tape.<\/p>\n<p>When Dad spoke again, he sounded tired in a way I had never heard him sound alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus did not give Evan those keys by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew where Evan was going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s next words arrived slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he knew Daniel would be driving home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered my name.<\/p>\n<p>The tape crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus wanted those two vehicles on the same road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still don\u2019t know whether he expected a crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I know what he expected to disappear afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording could not hear me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Four hundred dollars could not possibly explain this.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the plant money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanny\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold all over.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not then.<\/p>\n<p>College student.<\/p>\n<p>Part-time job.<\/p>\n<p>Barely enough for rent and food.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what Danny thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know what Marcus used his name for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape clicked off.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=2514\">Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Dad Said Marcus Had Used My Name for Money I Never Knew Existed, and the Next Recording Told Me Exactly Where<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not answer Marcus.
