that Dad believed his own actions had helped place him on that road.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent fourteen years believing Richard agreed to wait because Evan was ill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Claire nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can still be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it wasn\u2019t the only DO NOT USE until maintenance check.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was Truck 18?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Evan did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truck I took.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen fell silent.<\/p>\n<p>My memory returned to the accident.<\/p>\n<p>A dark pickup entering the intersection.<\/p>\n<p>No warning.<\/p>\n<p>No clear image of brake lights.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew there was a problem with the truck?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour handwriting is on the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote shift notes all day. The rear brake lamps. Maybe wiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire asked, \u201cCould that have contributed to the accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered firmly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was coming from the side.
