It was deciding that because I had once made the choice for you, I had to keep making it.<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>That was it.<\/p>\n<p>The core.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had not been trapped by one decision.<\/p>\n<p>He had repeatedly renewed it.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about all the times in my own life when pride made persistence feel like consistency.<\/p>\n<p>Arguments I continued because admitting the first sentence was wrong seemed harder than continuing the tenth.<\/p>\n<p>Plans I defended because I had already invested in them.<\/p>\n<p>Dad did the same thing with a secret.<\/p>\n<p>Only the cost was fourteen years.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>If you are angry, be angry.<\/p>\n<p>If you never forgive me, I will have earned that consequence without losing the right to have loved you.<\/p>\n<p>I read that sentence aloud without meaning to.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wrote that love and failure could occupy the same person.<\/p>\n<p>So could gratitude and anger.<\/p>\n<p>He hoped I would not simplify Evan into either monster or hero because both would be easier than seeing him clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad added:<\/p>\n<p>Do not simplify me either.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemanding even now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily trait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next paragraph concerned Evan.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said he did not know what I should do.<\/p>\n<p>Meet him.<\/p>\n<p>Ignore him.<\/p>\n<p>Report what remained reportable.<\/p>\n<p>Burn the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Keep it.<\/p>\n<p>He refused to choose again.<\/p>\n<p>That was why Thomas had the package rather than me.<\/p>\n<p>I would have to go looking for it.<\/p>\n<p>I would have to decide I wanted the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s final paragraph was short.<\/p>\n<p>Danny, I spent years thinking being your father meant standing between you and pain. I should have taught myself sooner that sometimes being your father meant standing beside you while you faced it.<\/p>\n<p>My vision blurred.<\/p>\n<p>I could not continue.<\/p>\n<p>Claire took the page.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was soft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two more lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>She read them.<\/p>\n<p>I am sorry I learned that late.<\/p>\n<p>I love you. dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Just head down, forearms against the wood, because holding myself upright required more effort than I had.<\/p>\n<p>Claire put her hand between my shoulder blades.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody said anything.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had apologized.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly what I feared.<\/p>\n<p>And I heard his voice anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Not literally.<\/p>\n<p>But in every blunt locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was irritatingly vague.<\/p>\n<p>But for once, the unanswered question did not pull me immediately forward.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was enough.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the key back in the wooden box.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at Evan\u2019s sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>TO DANIEL \u2014 EVAN.<\/p>\n<p>I could open unexpectedly freeing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did not reach for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know you came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may be working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he can say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas studied me.<\/p>\n<p>I could see fear in his face.<\/p>\n<p>Not fear for Evan alone.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of the collision between two lives he had spent fourteen years keeping separate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t owe him kindness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t owe me anything either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you change your mind after he arrives\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>His thumb hovered above the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Before he called, I said, \u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not tell him what I read.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to hear what he says without knowing what version I already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire gave me a searching look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re testing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad would have approved.<\/p>\n<p>That irritated me.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas called.<\/p>\n<p>Evan answered after two rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The voice was younger than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan, I need you to come over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer is sitting at my kitchen table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Not even breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then the call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat went well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas called again.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hung up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something old and ugly stir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe ran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A text.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>This is Evan. I\u2019m not running.
