Of course I believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard was a good man. Good men can still be cowards in specific places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence stayed with me long after the song ended.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Aaron cornered me near the bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. I mean, are you going alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sounded offended on her behalf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you might want me there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was very Aaron.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want me, call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t, I will be sleeping until noon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held out a glass of water rather than another drink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad would have hated tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019d have left immediately after cake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe liked cake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.
