after ten minutes because friends were waiting.

The memory made my stomach drop.

“That was it?”

Mom nodded.

“He told me later he lost his nerve.”

I looked at the line on the back of the note.

There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell him, and I keep putting it off.

Not one moment.

Years.

A private failure carried around until it became normal.

“Why write Thomas’s number?”

Mom shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“He must have contacted Dad again.”

“Maybe.”

“After they moved?”

“Maybe.”

“You really don’t know?”

“No.”

This time I believed her.

Aaron examined the phone number.

“Could be an old landline.”

“Probably is.”

Claire looked at me.

“You don’t have to decide today.”

Mom nodded quickly.

“That’s what I’ve been saying.”

I looked at them.

Maybe they were right.

My wedding reception was starting.

People were waiting.

Claire had spent months preparing this day.

Dad’s secret had been buried for more than a decade.

Another twenty-four hours would change nothing.

I took the note from Aaron.

Then my phone from my pocket.

Mom stood.

“Daniel.”

I typed the number.

“Don’t.”

That word made me look up.

Not wait.

Not think.

Don’t.

“Why?”

“Because whatever Thomas says cannot undo what happened.”

“I know.”

“It could ruin today.”

I looked at Claire.

She was watching me without trying to influence the decision.

That mattered.

I looked back at Mom.

“Dad spent years waiting for the right moment to tell me.”

I held up the note.

“He never found it.”

My thumb hovered over the call button.

“I’m not making the same mistake.”

Then I pressed it.

The room went silent.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

I expected a disconnected message.

Instead, someone answered.

An older male voice.

“Hello?”

I could not speak for a second.

Then I said, “Is this Thomas Avery?”

Silence.

A longer silence than any stranger would normally give.

Finally:

“Who is this?”

I looked at Dad’s handwriting.

“My name is Daniel.”

The voice on the other end changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Oh God.”

Mom closed her eyes.

Claire reached for my hand.

Thomas spoke again.

This time his voice shook.

“Richard’s son?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

Another silence.

Then he said the sentence none of us expected.

“I’ve been waiting fourteen years for you to call.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Thomas Said He Had Waited Fourteen Years for My Call, Then Told Me What Dad
