apparently written the note after an anniversary dinner years earlier.

There was no date.

Only references.

He wrote that Mom had complained about him keeping old receipts, useless notes, and “enough junk to furnish a small hardware store” in his pockets.

He claimed she was exaggerating.

She interrupted immediately.

“I was not.”

“I believe you.”

“She once found bolts in his pajama drawer,” Aaron said.

Mom nodded.

“Exactly.”

I kept reading.

The first half of the note was mostly teasing.

Dad reminded Mom that she had married him despite knowing exactly what he was like.

He claimed she had no legal grounds for surprise.

He wrote that if she was finding the note years later, she should consider it proof that pockets occasionally rewarded patience.

Then the tone changed.

Not dramatically.

Dad rarely wrote dramatically.

It changed because the jokes thinned out.

He wrote about the suit.

About their wedding day.

About how nervous he had been.

That surprised me.

Dad had always described himself as completely calm at his wedding.

According to family legend, Mom had been the nervous one.

The note contradicted him.

He admitted he had nearly been sick in the church parking lot.

Mom laughed.

“He never told me that.”

I looked at her.

“He wrote that Uncle Peter had to keep him from leaving.”

“What?”

“Not leaving the wedding.”

I read again.

“Leaving to buy antacids.”

Mom bent forward laughing.

For several seconds none of us could continue.

When the room settled, I returned to the page.

Dad wrote that he had been terrified not because he doubted Mom, but because suddenly every promise felt enormous.

Until that morning, marriage had been an idea.

Then he put on the suit.

The idea became real.

He understood that somebody was trusting him with years he had not yet lived.

I read that sentence twice.

Claire touched my arm.

“What?”

I handed her the paper and pointed.

She read silently.

Her eyes lifted to mine.

That was exactly what our officiant had been talking about.

Choosing the person through time.

Dad had felt it too.

I had spent years imagining him as someone who walked through adulthood without uncertainty.

Apparently he had simply hidden it better.

Mom watched us.

“What does it say?”

I read the line aloud.

Her face changed.

“He was twenty-eight.”

“So?”

“He acted like he knew everything.”

Aaron smiled.

“Some things were lifelong.”

Mom gave him a small shove.

I continued.

Dad told her he eventually realized nobody was ready for the whole future.

You only had to be ready for the next promise.

Then the one after that.

Then another.

A marriage, he wrote, was thousands of ordinary promises nobody photographed.

Pick up the medicine.

Call when you’re late.

Listen even when you’re tired.

Fix what you break.

Say sorry before pride turns into stupidity.

That last sentence made Claire look at me.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You looked at me.”

“I did not.”

“You absolutely note.

Near the bottom, Dad wrote something stranger.

Linda, if the boys ever get married, don’t let them turn their weddings into performances for dead people.

My breath stopped.

Aaron read over my shoulder.

“Oh.”

Mom’s eyes widened.

“What?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

I read the next sentence.

We had our day. Let them have theirs.

Nobody spoke.

Claire slowly looked down at the suit she was wearing.

“Oh no.”

Mom reached for the page.

I handed it to her.

She read silently.

Her expression became impossible to read.

Claire stood.

“I should change.”

I caught her wrist.

“No.”

“Daniel, he literally said—”

“I think we got the important part.”

Mom did.

Then she laughed.

Hard.

So hard she had to sit back.

“What?”

Claire looked alarmed.

Mom handed her the note.

Claire found the line after the one that had frightened her.

Dad had written:

That doesn’t mean you should pretend we never existed. Tell embarrassing stories. Use my tools. Drink the whiskey. Keep whatever helps. Get rid of whatever doesn’t. Memory should be useful, not heavy.

My throat tightened.

Claire read the final lines.

And if one of those boys becomes sentimental enough to wear my suit, make sure he gets the trousers shortened. I paid too much for those pants to have them dragged through mud.

For three seconds, nobody reacted.

Then Aaron lost control.

He bent over laughing.

I stared at the note.

Mom was crying and laughing simultaneously.

Claire looked down at the enormous trousers gathered around her shoes.

Then at me.

“I think I have accidentally violated a direct instruction from your father.”

That finished me.

I sat beside Mom because I could no longer stand.

We laughed until breathing hurt.

It was absurd.

The joke.

The coincidence.

The fact that Claire, who had never met him, had walked down the aisle in the exact suit whose pocket contained a warning about hypothetical sons wearing it badly.

Aaron wiped his eyes.

“I refuse to believe this.”

Mom took the note again.

“That’s his handwriting.”

“I know.”

“He must have written it after our twenty-fifth anniversary.”

“How do you know?”

“The whiskey.”

“What whiskey?”

She pointed toward the sentence.

“Drink the whiskey.”

We waited.

Mom’s face softened.

“For our twenty-fifth, your father bought an expensive bottle and said we would save it for your thirtieth.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Aaron smiled.

“Friday?”

Mom looked at him.

“How did you know?”

“Because Dad.”

She nodded.

“We opened it three months later because the weather was nice.”

There it was again.

Don’t save the good things so long they become relics.

Use them.

Dad’s tools.

His stories.

The suit.

Claire sat opposite me.

Her hand rested over the pocket.

“You know what’s strange?”

“Everything?”

“Besides everything.”

She looked at the note.

“I was worried I had crossed a line.”

“You did.”

Her face fell.

I smiled.

“The trouser line.”

She groaned.

Aaron laughed again.

I reached for her hand.

“I’m glad you wore it.”

“Even knowing what he wrote?”

“Especially knowing.”

“Why?”

I looked at the last paragraph.

Memory should be useful, not heavy.

For four years, I had treated grief as something I had to keep contained because allowing it into good days would ruin them.

Dad apparently had a different opinion.

“He told us exactly what to do.”

Claire waited.

“Use what helps.”

She nodded slowly.

Mom folded the note again.

Not along the old creases this time.

She paused before completing the fold.

“There’s writing on the back.”

My head lifted.

“What?”

She turned the page over.

A shorter message covered the lower half.

The handwriting was still Dad’s, but the ink looked different.

Darker.

Possibly written at another time.

At the top was a single line.

P.S.
