cold.

The paper was yellowed along the edges and creased into quarters.

It was not something Claire had placed there recently.

Even from where I stood, I could see the age immediately.

The officiant looked relieved to have a decision.

“We can put it somewhere safe.”

Aaron opened his jacket.

“I can hold into the inner pocket.

The gesture struck me strangely.

For a few more minutes, Dad’s secret could remain where he had left it.

Then Claire buttoned the jacket.

The button strained slightly because the suit had never been designed for her.

“Ready?” she asked.

I looked at her.

Five minutes earlier I had somehow, the ceremony began.

The officiant spoke about partnership.

About choosing the same person repeatedly, not only when love felt effortless but when life became inconvenient, frightening, ordinary, or uncertain.

Normally I would have listened carefully.

Instead, part of my mind remained inside the pocket of my father’s jacket.

FOR LATER.

When had he written it?

Why put it there?

Was it intended for Mom?

For himself?

For us?

It could have been meaningless.

That possibility should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

Claire’s thumb moved against my hand.

I looked at her.

She knew exactly where my mind had gone.

Her eyes said what Jenna had told me earlier.

Stay here.

Trust me.

I breathed.

Then the officiant turned toward me.

“Daniel, you wanted to read your own vows.”

I reached inside my jacket.

For a horrible second, I thought I had forgotten the folded page in the groom’s room.

Then my fingers found it.

Aaron whispered, “Strong start.”

I ignored him.

The paper shook slightly when I opened it.

I looked at the first sentence.

The words I had practiced dozens of times suddenly felt too polished for what had just happened.

Rainy evening.

First apartment.

Coffee.

All the neat little stories I had arranged to explain why I loved Claire.

None of them seemed enough.

So I folded the page again.

Claire’s eyebrows lifted.

“I wrote vows,” I said.

A few people smiled.

“I rewrote them six times.”

Aaron said quietly, “Eight.”

I turned my head.

“You read them?”

“You left them on the printer.”

“You are a terrible person.”

“Continue.”

More laughter.

I looked back at Claire.

“I thought I needed the right words.”

Her smile faded.

“I don’t think I do anymore.”

The garden became quiet.

“I spent most of my life believing that being
