had used it constantly.

At family dinners.

On the phone.

Across parking lots.

When he was proud of me.

When he was irritated.

When I was thirty and had already asked him repeatedly to stop.

The name belonged to his voice so completely that seeing it stitched into the cuff felt less like reading and more like hearing him.

Danny.

I covered my mouth.

The garden blurred.

A ridiculous part of my brain expected a hand to land on my shoulder.

I nearly turned around.

Instead, Claire touched my wrist.

Her fingers were warm.

“Daniel.”

I looked at her.

She was crying openly now.

“Is this same fabric.

The same lining.

The same ridiculous broad shoulders from those old photographs.

I started crying before I could decide whether I wanted to.

There was nothing dignified about it.

I wiped my face, failed to recover, then laughed once because the alternative was making some terrible noise in front of everyone.

Aaron’s hand true.”

“What did you ask for?”

Claire looked at the cuff again.

“Something of your father’s that I could carry with me when I came down the I took the jacket out and put it on.”

“Why?”

“To see how enormous it was.”

“You already knew it was enormous.”

“I was curious.”

“That defense is getting weaker.”

“I know.”

Her smile faded into something softer.

“And then I looked at myself in the mirror.”

Something about her tone silenced me.

Claire placed her palm against the old jacket.

“I stopped thinking about the fabric.”

She looked at me.

“I thought about you.”

My chest tightened again.

She continued quietly.

“I thought about how many times people mentioned your dad during the didn’t want you worrying about me.”

“I know that too.”

That was Claire.

She said it without triumph.

Without telling me I had been wrong.

She simply stood there in my father’s absurdly large wedding suit and acknowledged the things I had tried so carefully not to say.

Her fingers moved over the stitched name.

“I knew a scrap around my bouquet would be meaningful.”

She paused.

“But when I put the whole suit on, I understood what I wanted to harder.

I looked down at the cuff one more time.

Richard’s Wedding Suit.

Danny.

The old writing.

The new stitching.

Two wedding days face.

“Possibly several.”

That earned another quiet laugh from the guests.

Claire took my hand.

“I really am sorry.”

I shook my
