smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m retiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing emotionally attached to your trim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, she said, \u201cI\u2019m glad you sold it to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because it stayed in the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we wanted it and could afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the correct answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I get a certificate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>When the evening ended, David lingered near the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Leo and Sarah were already in their car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked back through the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought coming here would now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad would like what she did with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe green wall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then David said, \u201cI finished paying the first third of the debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot because I want help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr praise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome walked to his car, I thought about the first message that started all of this.<\/p>\n<p>This is my home, not yours.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I heard arrogance.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I understood there had also been fear.<\/p>\n<p>David wanted one place in his life where he felt secure.<\/p>\n<p>The mistake was believing security came from claiming something before it was his.<\/p>\n<p>Now he rented a townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Owed money.<\/p>\n<p>Rebuilt savings slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Had no guaranteed inheritance beyond whatever my estate someday contained.<\/p>\n<p>And he seemed more secure than he had in years.<\/p>\n<p>Because the foundation was finally real.<\/p>\n<p>That night, Leo emailed me his completed school assignment.<\/p>\n<p>The final sentence read:<\/p>\n<p>My grandpa Arthur fixed floors and taught our family stuff even after he died because everybody took a long time to understand.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed until I cried.<\/p>\n<p>Then I printed it.<\/p>\n<p>Not for evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Not
