to distort his judgment and convinced himself he was preserving assets for his daughter and grandson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he mention wanting half the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe acknowledged the arrangement would also have benefited his business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaitlyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound disappointed he wasn\u2019t more evasive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I was.<\/p>\n<p>Anger likes consistency.<\/p>\n<p>A villain who admits part of the truth becomes harder to hold neatly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he blame Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate who I am with her now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not whether Sarah had improved.<\/p>\n<p>What mistrust had turned David into.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at receipts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should, for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI check account alerts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wonder whether every late text means she\u2019s hiding something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s harder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says I\u2019m punishing her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell your counselor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think I should leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you should stop asking me to decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also want you to choose your own life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat includes making choices I might dislike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDangerous offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t test it unnecessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, he told me he had made the first payment on the formal debt schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially educational pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He asked what I had seen.<\/p>\n<p>I sent him a photograph of the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>He replied:<\/p>\n<p>Dad would\u2019ve loved asked whether I had found Leo\u2019s rock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing that requires freight shipping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo promises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We talked about restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Weather.<\/p>\n<p>A woman at my lodge who wore hiking boots with a silk skirt.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing important.<\/p>\n<p>Which made it important.<\/p>\n<p>The final night, I took Arthur\u2019s photograph from my suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>We were younger in it.<\/p>\n<p>Not young.<\/p>\n<p>But younger than I now felt.<\/p>\n<p>He stood by that lake holding lemonade, squinting as though the photographer had personally offended him with sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>I set the photo on the balcony table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMade it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had spoken to his memory when decisions frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>What would Arthur do?<\/p>\n<p>What would Arthur want?<\/p>\n<p>What would Arthur think of David?<\/p>\n<p>The questions comforted me because they allowed me to borrow certainty from a man who could no longer disagree.<\/p>\n<p>Now I asked something different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I want next?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That question belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned home, David picked me up from the station.<\/p>\n<p>I had told him not to.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was already nearby.<\/p>\n<p>I believed that about sixty percent.<\/p>\n<p>He loaded my suitcase into his car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your review?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMountains. Trees. No jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you feel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen be relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd guilty about being relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We stopped at a light.<\/p>\n<p>David looked over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah wants to apologize to Jenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen she should ask Jenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is also an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re really enjoying boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought a souvenir T-shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed so suddenly he missed the light changing.<\/p>\n<p>The driver behind us honked.<\/p>\n<p>David raised a hand in apology.<\/p>\n<p>As we turned onto my street, he said something quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I think I might forgive her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think I\u2019m stupid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think I should divorce her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think forgiveness and marriage are separate decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what the counselor says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExpensive person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He carried my suitcase to the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Did not enter until I invited him.<\/p>\n<p>That small thing still mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he handed me a folded sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a drawing.<\/p>\n<p>Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>A stick figure with gray hair.<\/p>\n<p>A much larger stick figure beside her with wings.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma and Grandpa in Canada, written across the top.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him Grandpa wasn\u2019t actually there,\u201d David said quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he knows but drew him anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the page.<\/p>\n<p>Children understood memory more easily than adults sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>They did not require presence to be literal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After David left, I carried my suitcase upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The house felt exactly as it had before.<\/p>\n<p>But I did not.<\/p>\n<p>On the kitchen counter, among held mail, sat the first property-tax notice in years that did not belong to me.<\/p>\n<p>It was addressed to Jenna and Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>The postal service had forwarded it incorrectly.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Then laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Even bureaucracy needed time to learn boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>I texted Jenna a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Your problem.<\/p>\n<p>She replied almost immediately:<\/p>\n<p>Best message you\u2019ve ever sent me.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastestdrama.com\/?p=2374\">Click here to continue reading: PART 24: Months After the Crisis Began, Leo Asked the Question None of the Adults Had Managed to Answer Without Blaming Someone Else<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The train pulled away just after sunrise.
