Social Security card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my stomach turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That phrase again.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked to see the garage boxes.<\/p>\n<p>We walked through the kitchen and out the side door.<\/p>\n<p>The garage smelled of cardboard, motor oil, and warm dust.<\/p>\n<p>Against the far wall were four plastic storage bins I had almost forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had labeled them with masking tape.<\/p>\n<p>RENTAL HOUSE.<\/p>\n<p>TAX.<\/p>\n<p>REPAIRS.<\/p>\n<p>MISC.<\/p>\n<p>The RENTAL HOUSE lid was crooked.<\/p>\n<p>We opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were folders, receipts, old tenant applications, appliance manuals, paint samples, copies of insurance declarations.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel began sorting carefully.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Arthur\u2019s handwriting everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>NOT URGENT.<\/p>\n<p>CALL PLUMBER.<\/p>\n<p>SAVE FOR TAXES.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, nothing seemed unusual.<\/p>\n<p>Then David reached toward the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was manila, yellowed at one edge.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Not Arthur\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>I did not remember writing it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photocopy of a deed form.<\/p>\n<p>An old draft.<\/p>\n<p>Grantors: Arthur Russell and Caitlyn Russell.<\/p>\n<p>Grantee line blank.<\/p>\n<p>The document had never been executed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel examined it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis looks like a template your closing attorney may have provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered then.<\/p>\n<p>Years before Arthur died, we had considered moving the rental into a trust. Our attorney had sent draft documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But to someone unfamiliar with real-estate paperwork, it could look like the beginning of one.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it was another document.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>Different from the one I had found at home.<\/p>\n<p>If David uses house, ownership stays with us. Revisit only after stable finances.<\/p>\n<p>I sat on an old folding chair.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had planned this.<\/p>\n<p>Not the exact circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>But the boundary.<\/p>\n<p>He had imagined current one.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>I had renewed it two years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had never seen this license.<\/p>\n<p>It could not have been stored in an old file.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held it by the edges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know why this is here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I swear\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And I did.<\/p>\n<p>I did not think David had placed it there.<\/p>\n<p>But someone had.<\/p>\n<p>The folder contained more.<\/p>\n<p>A property tax statement from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the deed showing me as owner.<\/p>\n<p>A printout of estimated home value.<\/p>\n<p>The failed home-equity application.<\/p>\n<p>And a sheet with my personal information typed neatly in rows.<\/p>\n<p>Full name.<\/p>\n<p>Birth date.<\/p>\n<p>Previous address.<\/p>\n<p>Current address.<\/p>\n<p>Phone number.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance carrier.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a blank field labeled SSN.<\/p>\n<p>It was empty.<\/p>\n<p>I had never been so grateful for an empty space.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel photographed everything.<\/p>\n<p>David paced beside the garage door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time he said it.<\/p>\n<p>Not maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Not I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>She.<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>He twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you chose not to know a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed.<\/p>\n<p>He sat again.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, Daniel and I continued sorting while David stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah had me sign something a few months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it was for estate planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t read all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said if something happened to me, she needed to make sure Leo was protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice became very precise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the document mention this property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe keeps paperwork in the filing cabinet upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the house.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet was in the bedroom beside Sarah\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>David opened the bottom drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Folders.<\/p>\n<p>Medical.<\/p>\n<p>School.<\/p>\n<p>Taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>He searched quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Then more slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the folder called?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No such folder remained.<\/p>\n<p>David pulled out drawer after drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>David did.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah did not say hello.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice came through loud enough that all three of us heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is your mother\u2019s lawyer at our house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know he\u2019s here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah said, \u201cDavid, tell them to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said tell them to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps the first time in years, I saw Arthur in him.<\/p>\n<p>Not his face.<\/p>\n<p>His stillness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found the deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the loan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mom\u2019s documents in the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line remained open.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear traffic in the background.<\/p>\n<p>David asked, \u201cDid you forge her signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said something none of us expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect us before Jenna took everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Jenna have to do with this?\u201d David asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s answer came almost as a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your mother what she changed in her will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He looked just as confused as I felt.<\/p>\n<p>I had not changed my
