My keys were already in my purse. For a moment, I stood by the front door wondering whether driving over would contradict everything I had just said about respecting boundaries.

Then I remembered the lease.

No lease had been signed yet.

More importantly, if unauthorized demolition had begun inside a property I legally owned, this was not a social visit. It was a property matter.

I texted David before leaving.

I’m coming to inspect the bathroom because I’ve been told construction may have started without my permission. I’ll be there in thirty minutes.

I added nothing else.

The drive took twenty-two.

The neighborhood looked almost offensively ordinary when I arrived. A man two houses down was washing his truck. Children had left chalk drawings across a driveway. Someone’s sprinkler clicked rhythmically over a square of bright grass. Nothing about the street suggested that I was about to walk into a house I had owned for years and possibly discover I no longer knew what was happening inside it.

David’s car sat in the driveway.

Sarah’s was gone.

I parked at the curb rather than behind him.

Before I reached the porch, the front door opened.

David stepped outside and pulled the door nearly shut behind him.

He looked tired. Not dramatically so. Just unshaven, with a gray T-shirt wrinkled across his stomach and a faint crease between his eyebrows that had deepened since childhood.

“You can’t just come over because Jenna told you something.”

“I gave you notice.”

“You gave me thirty minutes.”

“For a property inspection after learning construction may have started.”

He rubbed one palm over his face.

“You’re making this insane.”

“What’s happening in the bathroom?”

“Nothing major.”

That answer did more than any confession would have.

“If it were nothing, you’d let me see it.”

He looked toward the street as though a neighbor might rescue him.

“Sarah’s not here.”

“I’m not here to argue with Sarah.”

“You argued yesterday.”

“She came to my house.”

His mouth tightened.

For several seconds we stood beneath the porch roof facing one another with a wrapped science kit still visible through the front window on a table inside. I had forgotten about Leo’s present until then.

Seeing it made me ache.

“David,” I said, quieter, “please open the door.”

He did.

The familiar smell of the house reached me first—coffee, laundry detergent, something faintly sweet from a candle Sarah liked to burn in the kitchen. Leo’s sneakers lay near the stairs. A plastic dinosaur was tipped onto its side beneath the console table.

Nothing downstairs looked different.

That almost made what I found upstairs worse.

David walked ahead of me, shoulders rigid.

The master-bedroom door was open. Beyond it, the bathroom looked as if someone had attacked it with tools and then gone to lunch.

The vanity was gone.

So was the mirror.

A section of drywall had been stripped from one wall, exposing studs and plumbing. Broken tile filled two contractor buckets near the doorway. The old fiberglass shower surround had been partly removed, leaving insulation visible along one edge. Plastic sheeting covered half the bedroom carpet, though dust had escaped far beyond it.

I stopped at the threshold.

For a few seconds, I genuinely could not speak.

This was not a plan.

This was demolition.

The bathroom had not been luxurious, but it had been functional. Arthur and I had replaced the vanity shortly after buying the house. I remembered choosing it together because Arthur complained that every cabinet in the store seemed designed to trap toothpaste underneath the drawers.

Now the cabinet was gone.

I turned to David.

“When did this start?”

“Monday.”

Monday.

Two days before he sent me the message about respecting his home.

“Who is doing the work?”

“A guy Sarah knows.”

“Licensed?”

“He does renovations.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

David crossed his arms.

“He’s done work for people she works with.”

I looked back at the exposed plumbing.

“Did you pull permits?”

His face told me before his mouth did.

“It’s a bathroom, Mom.”

“So no.”

“We’re not changing the structure.”

“There is an open wall.”

“It’s cosmetic.”

I actually laughed then, once, because the alternative was raising my voice.

“You removed plumbing fixtures and opened a wall without telling the owner.”

“You keep saying owner like we’re strangers.”

“I keep saying owner because somebody has to remember what that word means.”

He flinched.

I regretted the sharpness immediately, but not the point.

David stepped past me into the bathroom and nudged one of the buckets aside with his foot.

“We were going to improve it.”

“With whose money?”

“Our money.”

That surprised me.

“You told me last night you couldn’t afford rent.”

“That doesn’t mean we have zero money.”

“How much is this renovation costing?”

He hesitated.

I waited.

“About twelve.”

“Twelve what?”

He stared at me.

“Twelve thousand?”

“That’s the estimate.”

I leaned one hand against the bedroom doorframe.

The number rearranged the argument again.

David and Sarah had twelve thousand dollars available for a bathroom they wanted, while telling me that paying below-market rent would devastate them financially.

“When were you going to tell me?”

“We thought you’d like it.”

“No. You thought I wouldn’t find out until it was difficult to undo.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then why didn’t you ask before demolition?”

He had no answer.

I stepped closer to the bathroom but did not enter.
