6 – At My Mother-in-Law’s Dining Table, My Husband Finally Admitted the Other Woman Had Been in His Life for Eight Months

By four o'clock, I was sitting in Dolores's dining room.

The house was quieter than I had ever heard it on a Sunday afternoon.

Usually, somebody was laughing.

Somebody was calling a child away from the backyard.

Somebody was asking when dinner would be ready.

That day, there were no children running between rooms.

No brothers arguing over sports.

No wives carrying plates into the kitchen.

Just five people.

Dolores.

Duane.

Megan.

Me.

And a stack of papers that I wished I had never needed.

The blueberry muffins from that morning were still untouched.

Dolores had brought them along.

I noticed them because I didn't know where else to look.

It seemed strange that something as ordinary as muffins could survive a day like that.

But there they were.

Still wrapped.

Still waiting for somebody to want one.

Nobody did.

I placed the phone records on the dining table.

I kept my notebook beside them.

Duane watched my hands.

He knew what I had brought.

I could see it.

His eyes followed every page.

He didn't ask what they were.

He didn't pretend to be confused.

That told me more than another denial would have.

Dolores sat across from him.

Megan sat beside me.

My sister looked exhausted.

She hadn't stopped apologizing since the day before.

I had asked her to stop.

Not because I had forgiven everything.

Because I couldn't bear another apology while there were still so many facts missing.

Dolores looked at the stack.

"What did you find?"

I took a breath.

"Six months of account activity."

Duane rubbed his face.

I didn't look away.

"There is one number that appears over and over."

Dolores leaned forward.

"Whose number?"

I looked at my husband.

"That's what we're here to ask."

He lowered his eyes.

I waited.

He didn't speak.

I pushed the first page toward Dolores.

She put on her glasses.

I watched her read.

She traced the entries with her finger.

Then she turned the page.

Her expression changed slowly.

She looked at the number.

Then at the repeated dates.

Then at the number again.

"Is this the same person?"

I nodded.

"As far as the records show."

She looked at Duane.

"Who is it?"

He stayed quiet.

Dolores turned another page.

I could see her becoming angrier.

Not suddenly.

Slowly.

The way people become angry when each new fact makes the previous one look worse.

She put the page down.

"Two hundred and seventeen calls?"

I nodded.

"That's what I counted."

She looked at her son.

"Two hundred and seventeen?"

Duane pressed his hands together.

I placed another sheet beside the first.

"And eighty-three extended text conversations."

Megan turned toward me.

"Extended?"

"Over an hour each."

She stared at the page.

Then she looked at Duane.

For the first time, my sister seemed to understand that the situation was larger than the money she had received.

There was another life happening beside ours.

A life I hadn't been invited to see.

Dolores removed her glasses.

She placed them on the table.

"Duane, I want an answer."

He looked toward the window.

There was a tree outside.

I remember that because he stared at it as though he might find a way out between the branches.

I kept my hands in my lap.

I didn't want to interrupt.

I had interrupted him plenty of times in our kitchen.

I had demanded answers.

I had argued.

I had raised my voice.

None of it had made him tell me the truth.

So I waited.

Dolores asked again.

"Who have you been calling?"

Duane swallowed.

I watched his throat move.

Then he spoke.

"Someone from work."

I felt my chest tighten.

"The plant?"

He nodded.

I looked down at the records.

So many conversations.

So many hours.

And all he could offer was someone from work.

Dolores leaned forward.

"Does this person have a name?"

Duane looked at his hands.

"Rachel."

I repeated it silently.

Rachel.

It was an ordinary name.

I had probably served women named Rachel at the steakhouse.

I might have heard coworkers mention someone by that name.

But I had never heard Duane speak about her.

Not once.

I looked up.

"Rachel who?"

He didn't answer.

I didn't push.

Not yet.

I wanted to know something more important.

"Is she the person who sent that message?"

He nodded.

Megan looked down.

Dolores closed her eyes.

I stared at Duane.

"So my sister wasn't the person behind that notification."

He shook his head.

"No."

The answer should not have surprised me.

I had already seen his reaction.

But hearing him admit it made everything feel more real.

I had spent the previous day trying to understand the strange connection between Duane and Megan.

Now I realized there had been a separate secret underneath it.

Megan hadn't been the woman he was hiding in the phone records.

She had been the explanation he thought I might accept.

I looked at my sister.

She seemed physically ill.

"Did you know about Rachel?"

She shook her head quickly.

"No."

I believed her.

That surprised me.

After everything, I still recognized when Megan was frightened by something she hadn't expected.

She looked at Duane.

"You let me sit here and explain those payments while you knew there was someone else?"

He rubbed his forehead.

"Megan, please."

She shook her head.

"Don't."

I understood that word.

I had said it myself.

There comes a point when another explanation feels more insulting than silence.

Dolores looked at him.

"Are you involved with this woman?"

Duane didn't answer immediately.

I felt my heart beating in my throat.

He looked at his mother.

Then at me.

Finally, he nodded.

"Yes."

The room became very quiet.

I had expected anger.

I had expected to cry.

Instead, I felt my hands go cold.

I looked at the phone records.

The pages were still spread neatly across the table.

Numbers.

Dates.

Times.

A truth that had existed long before anyone said it aloud.

I asked the next question.

"How long?"

Duane stared at the table.

I waited.

Megan looked at him.

Dolores sat completely still.

"Eight months."

I repeated it.

"Eight months?"

He nodded.

I looked toward the window.

Eight months.

I tried to picture what I had been doing eight months earlier.

Working.

Paying bills.

Helping Ava with the things she needed.

Planning around school events.

Coming home with cash in my apron.

Trusting that Duane was as tired as I was.

Eight months of normal life.

At least, normal for me.

I looked at the records again.

Six months of information.

Eight months of involvement.

There were two months I hadn't even requested.

I felt a strange urge to return to the phone store.

To ask for more pages.

To count every call from the beginning.

Then I realized it wouldn't change the answer.

The answer was sitting across from me.

My husband had been seeing another woman for eight months.

I didn't need another page to understand that.

I looked at Duane.

"Was that why you took the money?"

He rubbed his face.

I could see him searching for words.

The missing forty dollars had happened over twenty-two weeks.

Almost the same stretch of time as the relationship he had just admitted.

The dates weren't identical.

But they were close enough to make me think.

The scratch tickets.

The prize.

The money disappearing.

The excuses.

I had treated those things as separate problems.

Now I wondered whether they had been covering something much bigger.

Dolores looked at me.

"What are you thinking?"

I pointed at the notebook.

"These entries."

She leaned closer.

"The missing money?"

I nodded.

"Twenty-two weeks."

Duane stared at the table.

I continued.

"That's how long the forty dollars kept disappearing."

Nobody spoke.

I looked at him.

"You've been seeing Rachel for eight months."

He closed his eyes.

I waited for him to explain.

He didn't.

The timing was close enough that I couldn't ignore it.

I remembered the scratch tickets.

The way he had acted as though buying them was ordinary.

The way he had kept the prize hidden.

The way he had given Megan money without telling either of us where it came from.

He had created so many explanations that I no longer knew which one he expected me to believe.

Dolores spoke quietly.

"Duane, why didn't you just tell the truth?"

He looked up.

His face was red.

"I didn't know how."

I stared at him.

Eight months.

Hundreds of calls.

Long conversations.

A secret name on his phone.

And he didn't know how to tell the truth.

I wanted to ask whether he knew how to lie.

But the answer was sitting right in front of me.

Megan wiped her eyes.

"Does Rachel know you're married?"

Duane hesitated.

I watched him.

That hesitation mattered.

It was the same kind of pause Megan had made when I asked about the nickname.

The kind that told you the answer was going to hurt.

He looked away.

I asked again.

"Does she know about me?"

He didn't give me a clear answer.

I felt something settle inside me.

I could keep pressing him.

I could ask the same question ten different ways.

He might eventually give me enough words to make it sound less terrible.

But I no longer wanted his version alone.

I wanted to hear from the person on the other end of those calls.

Dolores looked exhausted.

She had spent the morning discovering that her son had taken money and lied about a prize.

Now she was sitting across from him while he admitted an affair.

I wondered what she was feeling.

Shame.

Disappointment.

Anger.

I could see all three.

But I couldn't carry her feelings too.

I had enough of my own.

I gathered the pages.

Duane watched me.

"Lita."

I kept folding the papers.

"What?"

"I'm sorry."

I nodded.

I had heard the words before.

They didn't tell me anything.

He leaned forward.

"I never wanted you to find out like this."

I looked at him.

"How did you want me to find out?"

He didn't answer.

I waited.

Then I asked something that had been sitting in my chest since I saw the notification.

"Were you ever going to tell me?"

He stared at the table.

The silence lasted long enough.

I put the records back in order.

Dolores looked at me.

"What are you going to do?"

I thought about Ava.

She was still away at her debate tournament.

She didn't know what was happening at home.

I wanted to protect that for a little longer.

I wanted one part of our family to remain untouched until I understood what I was going to say.

I looked at Dolores.

"I need to know what Rachel was told."

Duane's head came up.

"Don't contact her."

I looked at him.

There it was again.

The panic.

The sudden need to control what happened next.

I held his gaze.

"You don't get to decide that."

He looked toward his mother.

Dolores didn't defend him.

She only looked tired.

Megan touched the edge of the table.

"Lita, do you want me to come with you?"

I shook my head.

"No."

She nodded.

I appreciated that she didn't argue.

This was something I needed to do myself.

I looked at the phone records.

The number was printed over and over.

I had spent the afternoon reading it without knowing who belonged to it.

Now I had a name.

Rachel.

Eight months.

Two hundred and seventeen calls in six months.

Eighty-three long message exchanges.

Those were facts.

They were enough to make me stop listening to Duane's explanations.

I gathered my purse.

I didn't make a speech.

I didn't announce what would happen to our marriage.

I wasn't ready.

But I knew one thing.

The next person I needed to speak to wasn't sitting at that table.
