4 – I Thought My Sister Was the Secret My Husband Had Been Hiding, Until His Phone Revealed a Different Kind of Betrayal

I thought the worst part of that Sunday morning was over.

Megan had told me what she knew.

Dolores had seen the notebooks.

Duane had admitted taking money.

For once, nobody was pretending that I had simply misunderstood the situation.

I remember feeling tired enough to accept that as progress.

That embarrasses me now.

The truth wasn't finished.

I just didn't know how much was still waiting.

Dolores remained at the kitchen table.

The blueberry muffins sat untouched on the counter.

She had put my phone down beside the notebooks after looking at the photograph.

Duane hadn't moved very much.

He kept staring at the same place on the table.

I wondered whether he was ashamed.

Or whether he was simply trying to decide what else I might discover.

At the time, I still gave him the benefit of the doubt.

That was a habit I had developed over eleven years.

It did not disappear in one morning.

I looked at the glass jar.

I remembered how ordinary it had once been.

Cash from my shifts.

Bills folded in half.

Change dropped into the bottom.

Duane sometimes helped count it.

I used to like that.

It made the money feel shared.

Now I wondered what he had been thinking during all those evenings.

Had he already decided how much he would take?

Did he notice when I came home exhausted?

Did it bother him?

Or did he simply see money sitting there that nobody would question him about?

I rubbed my eyes.

Dolores spoke quietly.

"You should have told me things were this bad."

I looked at her.

"I didn't know they were."

She glanced toward Duane.

He didn't respond.

"Well, I know now."

I nodded.

There wasn't much else to say.

Megan had agreed to come over because I wanted her to speak for herself.

I didn't want my husband explaining her involvement again.

He had already done too much of that.

When she arrived, she looked as though she had been crying most of the night.

She stood uncertainly near the kitchen entrance.

Dolores turned toward her.

"Come in, sweetheart."

Megan looked at me first.

I gave a small nod.

She took the empty chair.

The four of us sat around the table.

My sister.

My husband.

My mother-in-law.

And me.

A family that had spent years eating together.

Now I wasn't sure what any of us really knew about the others.

Megan folded her hands.

"I want to explain something."

Dolores waited.

Megan looked at me.

"I never understood that the money was coming from your tips."

I kept my eyes on her.

She continued.

"Duane said he was earning extra."

Dolores looked toward her son.

"Is that what you told her?"

He nodded.

Megan swallowed.

"I believed him."

I could see how embarrassed she was.

Her eyes kept moving toward the table.

She didn't try to make herself sound innocent.

She just told us what she remembered.

The calls after her divorce.

The money in the mailbox.

The groceries.

The way Duane insisted she shouldn't trouble me.

Dolores listened without interrupting.

Then she looked at her son.

"You told her to keep this from your wife?"

Duane rubbed his forehead.

"I didn't want Lita worrying."

I looked at him.

"Was that really your reason?"

He sighed.

"I knew you'd try to pay for everything."

I almost laughed.

"Duane, I was paying for it."

He looked away.

Megan began crying again.

Dolores reached for a napkin and passed it to her.

I watched my sister wipe her face.

I was still angry with her.

I wasn't ready to pretend otherwise.

But I didn't believe she had planned to take advantage of me.

She had believed something she wanted to be true.

I knew how dangerous that could be.

I had done it for eleven years.

Dolores spoke again.

"Whatever you thought you were doing, it stops now."

Duane nodded.

Megan looked down.

I watched him carefully.

He had become very agreeable.

Too agreeable.

He wasn't arguing.

He wasn't raising his voice.

He was letting every accusation settle on the table as though silence might make the conversation end sooner.

I recognized that behavior.

He had done it during smaller arguments.

If I complained about an expense, he listened quietly until I was finished.

Then he promised to do better.

Sometimes he did.

Other times the same problem came back wearing a different explanation.

I had always called that compromise.

Now I wasn't sure what to call it.

Dolores looked at him.

"I want a proper accounting of this money."

He nodded.

"And I expect you to repay your wife."

"Yes, Mom."

She leaned back.

"Don't agree just because you want me to stop talking."

Duane looked up.

"I mean it."

I studied his face.

He appeared frightened.

Not angry.

Not defiant.

Frightened.

For a moment, I thought that might mean he finally understood what he had done.

Then his phone vibrated.

The sound was small.

It came from the table near his elbow.

I would probably have ignored it on any other morning.

Phones buzzed all the time.

Messages came in.

People checked them.

Nothing about that sound should have mattered.

But Duane moved too quickly.

His hand shot toward the phone.

He wasn't fast enough.

The screen lit up.

A notification appeared.

A name with a red heart.

MY GIRL ❤️

I stared at it.

My first thought was Megan.

Of course it was.

We had just spent hours talking about that ridiculous nickname.

I looked toward my sister.

She was sitting across the table with her phone inside her purse.

She hadn't touched it.

The notification remained on Duane's screen.

And beneath the name was a message preview.

I didn't need to read the whole conversation.

I only needed to see the name that appeared with it.

It wasn't Megan.

I felt something inside me go completely still.

Duane snatched the phone off the table.

He turned the screen toward his chest.

Too late.

I had seen enough.

Dolores had seen it too.

Megan's expression changed.

She looked from the phone to Duane.

Then at me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The kitchen felt smaller.

The clock seemed louder.

I could hear my own breathing.

I looked at my husband.

"Who was that?"

He swallowed.

"It's nothing."

I stared at him.

"Don't do that."

He looked toward his mother.

Dolores sat very straight.

She had been holding the photograph from the gas station again.

Now she lowered it.

"Answer her."

Duane rubbed his mouth.

"Lita, it's not what you're thinking."

I closed my eyes briefly.

There it was.

Another explanation beginning before the truth.

I opened my eyes.

"Then tell me what I'm supposed to think."

He didn't answer.

I looked at Megan.

She was pale.

"Megan, did you send him anything?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

I turned back toward Duane.

"So that isn't my sister."

He looked at the floor.

I waited.

He said nothing.

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

It wasn't peace.

It was the kind of calm that comes when the last excuse you wanted to believe has disappeared.

For days, I had been trying to understand why money was missing.

Then I had been trying to understand why Megan was involved.

Now I was looking at another woman hidden behind the same affectionate name.

I didn't even know who she was.

That seemed almost unbelievable.

I knew where Duane kept his work boots.

I knew how he liked his coffee.

I knew when his insurance payment was due.

I knew which shirt he wore when he wanted to look respectable.

But I didn't know the woman sending messages to his phone.

Dolores pushed back her chair.

"Duane."

He looked up.

"What have you been doing?"

He shook his head.

"Mom, please."

She raised her voice.

"No. You don't get to ask me for patience right now."

Megan covered her mouth.

I looked at Duane.

"Was my sister just an explanation you thought I would accept?"

He looked startled.

"No."

"Then who sent that message?"

He rubbed his forehead.

"I need a minute."

I shook my head.

"You've had eight months of minutes."

I hadn't yet understood everything that number would come to mean.

I only knew how long the money had been disappearing.

And I knew I was finished letting him control the pace of the truth.

Dolores stood.

"Give her an answer."

Duane looked toward the doorway.

He seemed to be considering leaving.

I didn't move.

"Your phone."

He looked at me.

"What?"

"Put it here."

I held out my hand.

He stared at it.

"Lita, no."

I waited.

He held the phone tighter.

I could see his knuckles.

The gesture told me more than another hour of talking would have.

"You won't show me?"

He shook his head.

"Not like this."

I lowered my hand.

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer.

I looked at the screen facing his chest.

The phone had gone dark.

But I could still see the notification in my mind.

The heart.

The name.

The message arriving while his mother was asking him to be honest.

I had never felt so foolish.

Not because another woman might exist.

Because I had spent the entire morning believing we were finally getting somewhere.

I had mistaken one confession for the whole truth.

Dolores looked furious.

"Do you understand what you're doing to your family?"

Duane pressed his lips together.

Megan's eyes filled again.

I didn't want to hear her cry.

I didn't want to hear Dolores scold him.

And I didn't want to listen to Duane explain that something obvious was not what it appeared to be.

I wanted facts.

Names.

Dates.

Numbers.

Things that didn't change depending on who was telling the story.

I thought about my notebooks.

For eleven years, the numbers had stayed where I put them.

People hadn't.

I reached for my purse.

Duane watched me.

"Where are you going?"

I put the notebook inside.

Then my keys.

"I need information you're not willing to give me."

His face changed.

"Lita."

I walked toward the hallway.

He followed.

"Can we please talk about this privately?"

I stopped and looked at him.

"We've been talking privately for years."

He didn't answer.

"And somehow I'm still the last person to know what happens in my own marriage."

His eyes looked wet.

I couldn't tell whether he was about to cry.

It didn't matter.

He stepped closer.

"Please don't make this worse."

I stared at him.

That sentence told me something important.

He was still thinking about consequences.

Not truth.

Not what he had done.

Only what might happen if I found out more.

I looked down at his phone.

"Then show me."

He didn't move.

I nodded.

"All right."

His expression became anxious.

"What are you going to do?"

I opened the front door.

"Find out what you've been hiding."

He followed me onto the threshold.

"How?"

I looked back.

"You're not the only person whose name is on our phone account."

His face drained.

I had insisted years earlier that both of us be listed on the family plan.

I didn't believe one spouse should control all the records while the other simply paid a share of the bills.

Duane had agreed.

At the time, it had seemed like a small, practical decision.

Now I was grateful I had made it.

He stood very still.

"Lita, don't."

I looked at him.

For the first time that morning, he sounded genuinely afraid of what I might learn.

Not what I might imagine.

Not what I might accuse him of.

What I might actually find.

I stepped outside.

Behind him, I could see Dolores standing near the kitchen table.

Megan remained seated.

The notebooks were still open.

The muffins were still untouched.

The glass jar stood on the counter.

Nothing in that room had moved very far.

But my understanding of it had changed completely.

I walked to my car.

My hands were shaking again.

I sat behind the wheel and put my purse on the passenger seat.

Then I looked at the house.

I had spent eleven years trying to make sure we had enough.

Enough money.

Enough security.

Enough trust to keep going.

I had believed that careful work could protect a family.

Now I understood that a person could count every dollar and still be cheated out of something much harder to replace.

I started the engine.

I wasn't going to call the unknown woman.

I wasn't going to ask Duane for another explanation.

And I wasn't going to let the notification disappear into another argument about what I thought I had seen.

I was going to the phone company.

If my husband refused to tell me who he had been talking to, I would begin with the records.

I had trusted my own handwriting for eleven years.

It was time to see what the phone bills could tell me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Phone
