6 – My Daughter Admitted She Had Asked About My Ability to Manage My Own Affairs, and My Son Finally Challenged Her

Vanessa kept looking at the papers as though they were the problem.

I understood why.

The documents made it harder for her to pretend this was only a disagreement about Christmas.

There was a company name.

There was a proposed transfer.

There was a date waiting beside my signature.

And there was a letter from Thomas Bennett claiming authority he hadn't established.

I looked at my daughter.

"Vanessa, what exactly did Thomas tell you?"

She shifted in her chair.

"That there might be ways to arrange the membership properly."

Daniel waited.

"What ways?"

She glanced at Michael.

He didn't help her.

For once, my son seemed determined to hear the answer.

Vanessa let out a breath.

She explained that Thomas had discussed the possibility of showing that I was no longer actively managing certain family assets.

I stared at her.

I understood every word.

But I couldn't quite understand what she meant by putting them together.

"What does my ability to manage property have to do with your Christmas plans?"

She looked uncomfortable.

"It was just something he mentioned."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did he discuss an evaluation of your mother's capacity to make financial decisions?"

Vanessa went quiet.

I looked from Daniel to my daughter.

I hadn't expected that question.

Daniel asked again.

"Was there any discussion of obtaining medical documentation about Margaret's ability to manage her affairs?"

Michael stood so abruptly that his chair shifted.

"Vanessa, what did you do?"

She looked up at him.

"Sit down."

"Answer me."

She shook her head.

"You're making this sound terrible."

Michael's voice became louder.

"Did you try to make it look like Mom couldn't manage her own money?"

Vanessa protested.

She said nobody had made such a determination.

She insisted she had only asked about possible options.

I heard her words.

But I was still trying to understand why anyone would consider that question in the first place.

I was seventy-one.

I knew that.

I had lost my husband.

I knew that too.

But I paid my bills.

I managed my home.

I handled my own accounts.

And until my children began interfering, I had managed the Sedona membership without difficulty.

The fact that I was grieving didn't make me incapable.

The fact that I missed Robert didn't make me confused.

And the fact that my daughter wanted something didn't mean I was unable to refuse it.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you ever think I couldn't make decisions for myself?"

She swallowed.

"Mom, I was trying to look after the family."

I felt my eyes sting.

"Who were you trying to protect them from?"

She didn't answer.

I waited.

"Me?"

Still nothing.

Michael remained standing.

I could tell he was angry.

He looked as though he wanted to say much more.

But Daniel closed the folder.

"I think we've reached the point where it would be better to gather the remaining information before continuing."

I knew he was right.

We didn't yet know what Thomas had actually advised.

We didn't know whether anything further had been prepared.

We didn't know whether Vanessa had taken any steps beyond making inquiries.

But I wasn't ready to let the conversation end.

Not before my daughter heard what her choices had meant to me.

I placed both hands on the table.

"Vanessa, did it occur to you that I might want to be with my grandchildren?"

She looked down.

I continued.

"Did you think I wanted to spend three Christmases alone?"

She said nothing.

"Did you think I wouldn't miss Emily growing up?"

My voice shook.

"Or Daniel? Or Sophie?"

I looked toward Robert's photograph.

"I wanted them to know their grandfather. I wanted them to hear the little stories about him."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

But she remained silent.

"I wanted to sit by that fireplace with them. That was all."

Michael looked at me.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I nodded.

I appreciated the words.

But I wasn't speaking only about Michael.

I turned back to Vanessa.

For years, I had tried to believe she was protecting me from painful memories.

Now I knew she had wanted to escape those memories herself.

She had wanted a Christmas without my grief.

And she had convinced herself that excluding me was reasonable.

But the paperwork went beyond that.

It suggested she had begun treating my right to decide as something that could be worked around.

I waited for an apology.

Vanessa looked at her hands.

Nothing came.

I finally understood that I couldn't make her ready to admit what she had done.

That was a decision she would have to reach herself.

I looked at Daniel.

"All right. Let's stop here."

He nodded.

Michael sat down again.

Vanessa stood.

Her face was pale.

I didn't follow her when she moved toward the door.

I didn't ask her to hug me.

I didn't try to make everyone smile before leaving.

There had been too much pretending already.

After they went, the room felt empty.

Lauren quietly gathered the coffee cups.

I watched her place them beside the sink.

I was grateful she hadn't tried to explain Vanessa's behavior away.

She had been willing to show me the messages.

She had brought the papers.

And she had admitted that she should have spoken to me sooner.

That honesty mattered.

Daniel remained at the table.

He told me the next step was to preserve the information.

He wanted the resort to retain the correspondence connected with the membership.

That included the requests from Vanessa.

It included Thomas's letter.

And it included the original ownership records.

I agreed.

I wanted everything handled properly.

I wasn't interested in revenge.

I wanted to know whether anybody had actually acted beyond the authority they claimed to have.

Daniel explained that we also needed to secure my original documents.

The leather case couldn't remain something I occasionally remembered in the back of a closet.

Those papers were important.

I nodded.

He also advised me to review my financial accounts.

We needed to make sure nobody else had access to my personal information or authority to act in my name.

I felt uneasy hearing that.

I had always been careful about money.

Robert and I had spent years working and saving.

After he died, I had continued managing my finances.

I didn't like the thought that someone might have tried to use my information without asking.

Daniel didn't say that had happened.

He said we needed to check.

That distinction mattered to me.

I didn't want fear to become evidence.

I wanted evidence to tell me what was true.

After Daniel left, I returned the papers to their folders.

The agreement from 1994 went on top.

I ran my fingers over Robert's handwriting.

He had thought ahead.

Not because he wanted our children to suffer.

Because he understood that the person who survived him would still have a life to live.

I had that life.

And I was beginning to claim it again.

That evening, I sat near the fireplace.

The room was quiet except for the occasional sound of burning wood.

I remembered Christmases when Vanessa and Michael were young.

They had argued over presents.

They had run through the casita.

They had made messes I spent hours cleaning.

I remembered scolding them gently and then laughing with Robert after they went to bed.

There had been difficult moments.

Of course there had.

Every family had them.

But I couldn't remember a time when I had thought my children would one day question whether I could manage my own affairs simply because I wouldn't give them something.

I sat there until the fire burned low.

Then I went to bed.

The following morning, my phone rang.

I was in the kitchen preparing coffee.

I glanced at the screen.

Thomas Bennett.

I stood still.

I hadn't spoken to him in years.

I could remember his face clearly.

He had attended our anniversary dinners.

He had once sat beside Robert in the hospital and promised to help if we needed anything.

He had been someone I trusted because Robert trusted him.

Now his name was on a letter questioning who could speak for my husband's estate.

I answered.

"Hello, Thomas."

His voice was warm.

"Margaret, it's been a long while."

I didn't return the pleasantry.

"Why did you contact the resort?"

He paused.

Then he said he had been trying to assist Vanessa.

I looked at the 1994 agreement lying on my table.

"Assist her with what?"

"Keeping the family's arrangements in order."

I felt my patience wearing thin.

"The membership belongs to me."

He acknowledged that.

But his voice had lost some of its warmth.

I wanted to know why he had claimed to speak for Robert's estate.

He suggested there had been a misunderstanding.

I had heard that word too many times.

Misunderstanding.

It was what people called a deliberate choice when they didn't want to explain it.

I asked him what authority he had.

He hesitated.

Daniel was present with me, and I had placed the call on speaker.

He leaned toward the phone.

"Thomas, this is Daniel Foster. I'm representing Margaret."

There was silence.

Daniel introduced the issue plainly.

He wanted to know under what legal authority Thomas had approached the resort.

Thomas said he had been contacted about a family matter.

Daniel asked who had contacted him.

"Vanessa."

I looked at the phone.

There it was again.

My daughter.

Daniel continued.

"Did Margaret personally authorize you to act for her?"

Thomas didn't answer.

"Do you have current authority to represent Robert Whitmore's estate?"

Thomas cleared his throat.

He said he would prefer to discuss the matter privately.

Daniel didn't argue.

He simply instructed Thomas to direct further communication through his office.

Then the call ended.

I looked at the screen.

The room was quiet.

I had hoped Thomas would provide a simple explanation.

Instead, he had avoided the questions that mattered most.

I turned toward Daniel.

"What happens now?"

He gathered his papers.

"We review what was submitted and find out whether anyone acted without authorization."

I nodded.

He looked at me carefully.

"Margaret, don't sign anything Vanessa or Thomas brings you."

I almost smiled.

That was one decision I no longer found difficult.

"I won't."

He nodded.

I looked at the Christmas tree.

The lights were still shining.

Outside, families were arriving and leaving.

Children were laughing along the paths.

For the first time in years, I was spending Christmas in Sedona.

Yet I had spent much of my visit examining papers and questioning people I had trusted.

I didn't want that to be the only memory I carried home.

I wanted to remember the reason Robert and I had bought the membership in the first place.

And that reason was waiting somewhere nearby.

My grandchildren.

Christmas Eve had arrived.

I hadn't seen them properly yet.

I didn't know whether Michael had explained everything.

I didn't know what the children believed.

But I knew I couldn't repair the lost Christmases by sitting alone with legal documents.

I needed to open my door.

I needed to let them see that I was still their grandmother.

And when Lauren's message arrived later that day, asking whether the children could visit, I answered immediately.

Grandma was ready for them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Grandchildren Came Back to the Casita on Christmas Eve, and One Small Wooden Ornament Reminded Me What Had Been Taken

Vanessa kept looking at the papers as though they were the problem.
